Paulo Coelho is a Brazilian author born in 1947 in Rio de Janeiro. As a teenager, he wanted to be a writer but his parents opposed this and had him committed to a mental hospital at age 17. After traveling through South and North America in the 1960s, he returned to Brazil and worked as a songwriter. In 1982, he published his first book and found international success with The Alchemist in 1988, which has sold over 65 million copies worldwide. Paulo Coelho is now one of the best-selling authors of all time with sales of over 175 million books translated into 80 languages.

• is a Brazilian lyricist and novelist and a
musician.
• He was born on August 24, 1947 in Rio De
Janeiro ,Brazil.
• Attended a jesuit school. As a teenager ,he
wanted to become a writer but his parents
were against him.
• Upon his stubborn behavior he was sent to
mental hospital at the age of 17.

Law school and abondoned his dream of
becoming a writer . 1 year later he dropped
out and lived life as a hippie,travelling through
South America,North America,Mexico , Europe
and started using drugs in 1960s.

• The following year 1988 he wrote The Alchemist.
• The Alchemist has gone on to sell more than 65
million copies,becoming one of the international
best selling books in history and has been
translated into 80 differebt languages ,winning
the Guiness World Record .
