Patterns of Early Civilization Chapter 2 Section 1
The View of Earth and Early Man Biblical View Evolutionary View Approximate age of the earth is 4.5 billion years Lengthy time period is needed to explain “evolution of life” Prehistoric time was before recorded history Man gradually developed from lower life forms Approximate age of the earth is 6000 years Man was created in the image of God and fully developed (Genesis 2:19-25) The view of “prehistoric” man may cover the period after the flood when mankind was rebuilding society
The Agriculture Revolution Refers to a period when mankind settled down and began farming and raising animals Adam and the early Biblical fathers were all shepherds God’s command to Adam in Genesis 3:17-19
The Establishment of Civilization Following the fall, Adam established the first civilization with his family. By the time of Abraham cities such as Ur were dominate in what is today the Middle East (Genesis 11:31)
Characteristics of a Civilization Civilization: a highly organized group of people with their own language and ways of living.  Civilizations include; Government and religion Specialized jobs Social classes Record keeping
Early Civilizations
Cultural Diffusion Diffusion: movement of ideas from one location to another Trade, war, and a growing interest by Europeans led to large scale cultural change  Trade with Arab merchants brought spices, books, and tools New world colonies produced new foods, furs, and building materials
The World in 1300
Review  What is one difference between the Biblical and evolutionary views of the world? How did the agriculture revolution impact mankind? What are the characteristics of a civilization? Name one of the early civilizations of the world. What is cultural diffusion? Name two world empires of the 1300’s.
