FDEI Jun Webinar: Engaging Families to Focus on Intervention Strategies
Young children with disabilities have better outcomes when their families are actively involved in supporting their child’s learning. This session will help Early Interventionists, private therapy providers, and other professionals working with young children with disabilities think about their interactions with the child's family and how those interactions strengthen a family’s ability to support their child’s learning.
In this 90 minute session participants will:
Learn about strategies to increase parent participation in their child’s Early Intervention home visits and/or therapy sessions
Explore possible strategies that can be used to engage a deployed parent in home visits and/or therapy sessions
Observe through video, professionals working with a parent to enhance the parent’s use of effective intervention strategies
Explore the use of tools and strategies that promote reflection on practices being used to engage families
Models of early intervention for students
Educational programs and approaches for students with intellectual disabilities (ID) and learning disabilities (LD) aim to break learning tasks into smaller steps, provide concrete demonstrations, and give immediate feedback. Models of early intervention include center-based programs, home-based programs, and programs in regular childcare settings. As students age, programs include integrated preschool settings, segregated preschool settings, Head Start, resource room placements, special class placements, and homebound programs. Educational approaches emphasize concrete demonstrations, breaking tasks into steps, providing assistance and feedback, teaching life skills, and collaborating with parents and staff.

Factors like socioeconomic status, parenting styles, family structure, and parent-child interactions at home all influence a student's learning and achievement. Schools that encourage collaboration with families tend to see students succeed not just academically but throughout their lives.

Sustrans developed an education resource to help Welsh schools teach literacy and numeracy skills through lessons focused on active and sustainable travel. A case study of Plascrug School found that using the resource, students were able to apply literacy and numeracy skills to real-world contexts like surveying travel to school and writing reports. Teachers reported that the resource made numeracy outcomes easier to integrate and provided creative writing opportunities. The resource was well received by 91% of schools in Wales that piloted it.
