Web-based Parcel Management System
2. 1. Background
The original United States Postal Service started in the United States in the 1700s; it
wasn’t until 1852 that the Wells Fargo company was established in the western United
States, around the same time that other parcel shipping companies started popping up.
These early developments led the way for companies like UPS, DHL and FedEx. UPS
was founded in Seattle in 1907 and is now responsible for billions of dollars in transfers
of goods, funds and information across the globe each and every day.
Later on, in the 1900s, DHL and FedEx joined the ranks of delivery service companies,
and nowadays they give UPS a run for its money, although UPS still stands strong as
the number one competitor for the United States Postal Service.
DHL was established in 1969 and was responsible for the new concept of international
air express. International Air Express reduces the cost and waits time for customers by
providing a more rapid means of transporting goods and documents.
Today, DHL, FedEx and UPS ship to nearly every country in the world—they will even
go places where they do have an established business as long as there is a post office
or package delivery service somewhere in the country.
All of the above companies have already proved that the parcel shipping is a profitable
business and they gain their profit day by day. They serve their customer properly. To
improve their service, they use parcel tracking system, which provide the security and
also stop corruption. As all the parcel information is stored in database, there is no way
to steal the parcel or damage it.
If we consider the case of Bangladesh Postal Department, we see its poor condition. It
uses the ancient technology which is not able to cope with this modern age. The present
system of Bangladesh Postal Department does not keep parcel information properly and
provides a way for corruptions. So day by day, Bangladesh postal department is going
backward. So to improve this condition and to stop the corruption, we propose a system,
which is easy to maintain, and the cost of implementation is low. Now people want to get
information as early as possible. They want to prevent of losing their parcel at any cost.
So the next time when they stick a product in a parcel post package for shipment across
the globe, they always aspect the developments that have occurred in the industry to
make their life and their packages move a little bit faster.
2. Scope
In this paper we will highlight the entire parcel management system of world that are-
• The present condition of parcel management system of world.
• How we can develop this system by using internet and mobile technology.
• Future prospect of proposed parcel management system.
• It will also cover different sectors where we can use this system.
3. Objectives
• Introducing people with a new concept of parcel management system.
• An attempt to show that how we can use this technology and get benefits.
• Finally, we have tried to show, how we can send and receive our parcel in a secured
way.
3. 4. Methodology
We have collected data from both primary & secondary sources. In collecting the data
from primary source, I have visited to several currier services and my secondary sources
of data have been collected from different outlets, brochures, journals, and articles and
from different web sites such as www.fedex.com, www.dhl.com, www.google.com. I
have tried my best to describe this concept as simply as possible. I have used both
descriptive & analytical way in describing the report. To implement this demo version I
need to use some software such as Apachi2tried, PHP, and HTML etc.
5. Limitation
• Because of time constraint we have developed only the basic part of the software.
So this demo software can provide only the essential features.
• It was not so easy to collect data from primary resource.
