This document provides an assessment of corporate social responsibility (CSR) reporting practices in China's mining and minerals industry from 2007 to 2010. It finds that while the number of disclosing companies has increased dramatically, the quality and substance of disclosures still needs considerable improvement. Chinese mining companies report some basic CSR information as well as topics unique to China, but reporting is still immature compared to global standards. For sustainability reporting to be more useful, local governments, communities, and internal company factors must play a greater role complementing external pressures from globalization and the national government.
