The study investigated the design optimization of these hybrid systems, focusing on understanding solar radiation patterns, identifying geographical influences on solar radiation, formulating a mathematical model for system optimization, and determining the optimal configuration of PV panels and pumped hydro storage. Through a comparative analysis approach and eight weeks of data collection, the study addressed key research questions related to solar radiation patterns and optimal system design. The findings highlighted regions with heightened solar radiation levels, showcasing substantial potential for power generation and emphasizing the system's efficiency. Optimizing system design significantly boosted power generation, promoted renewable energy utilization, and enhanced energy storage capacity. The study underscored the benefits of optimizing hybrid solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems for sustainable energy usage. Optimizing the design of solar PV panels and pumped hydro energy supply systems as examined across diverse climatic conditions in a developing country, not only enhances power generation but also improves the integration of renewable energy sources and boosts energy storage capacities, particularly beneficial for less economically prosperous regions. Immunizing Image Classifiers Against Localized Adversary Attacksgerogepatton
This paper addresses the vulnerability of deep learning models, particularly convolutional neural networks
(CNN)s, to adversarial attacks and presents a proactive training technique designed to counter them. We
introduce a novel volumization algorithm, which transforms 2D images into 3D volumetric representations.
When combined with 3D convolution and deep curriculum learning optimization (CLO), itsignificantly improves
the immunity of models against localized universal attacks by up to 40%. We evaluate our proposed approach
using contemporary CNN architectures and the modified Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR-10
and CIFAR-100) and ImageNet Large Scale Visual Recognition Challenge (ILSVRC12) datasets, showcasing
accuracy improvements over previous techniques. The results indicate that the combination of the volumetric
input and curriculum learning holds significant promise for mitigating adversarial attacks without necessitating
adversary training.

A hierarchical digital twin of a Naval DC power system has been developed and experimentally verified. Similar to other state-of-the-art digital twins, this technology creates a digital replica of the physical system executed in real-time or faster, which can modify hardware controls. However, its advantage stems from distributing computational efforts by utilizing a hierarchical structure composed of lower-level digital twin blocks and a higher-level system digital twin. Each digital twin block is associated with a physical subsystem of the hardware and communicates with a singular system digital twin, which creates a system-level response. By extracting information from each level of the hierarchy, power system controls of the hardware were reconfigured autonomously. This hierarchical digital twin development offers several advantages over other digital twins, particularly in the field of naval power systems. The hierarchical structure allows for greater computational efficiency and scalability while the ability to autonomously reconfigure hardware controls offers increased flexibility and responsiveness. The hierarchical decomposition and models utilized were well aligned with the physical twin, as indicated by the maximum deviations between the developed digital twin hierarchy and the hardware.

in a flow stream or current, their propulsion shafts need to be set and
locked to prevent undesired rotation. During regular maintenance the

7. Ice Breaker Propulsion Shaft
Problem:
A leading global marine propulsion system OEM required a
drive shaft turning, locking and braking solution for use on a
next-generation ice-breaking vessel. Controlled locally or from
the bridge, the equipment fitted to each of the three propeller
drives rotates and holds the propulsion shaft during maintenance.
It also stops and locks the drive shaft to prevent the propeller
from rotating when the vessel is moored in a flow stream.

continuous turning torque of 140 kNm at 0.6 rpm in both

Problem:
Reliable universal joints were required to serve as the main
drive shafts on two models of marine vessels used to ferry
crews and supplies to drilling platforms in the Gulf of Mexico.
The challenging issues in this application were that the shaft
systems varied in length from 196 to 240 inches, and each
shaft passed through a watertight bulkhead which required a
sealing system to isolate each hull section in case of damage.
Solution:

Problem:
A leading global designer and builder of marine and offshore
liquid gas plants needed a new cost-effective coupling solution
for use on a reciprocating compressor onboard an LNG ship.
Two couplings are used on the compressor drivetrain to connect
the electric motor to the gearbox and the gearbox to the
compressor. The previous couplings, which were costly and very
heavy, had a spacer machined from solid steel.

11. FPSO Vessel Pump
Problem:
A leading industrial pump manufacturer needed high-performance
couplings for a topside sea water injection pump package used
on-board a floating production, storage and off-loading (FPSO)
ship. The massive oil and gas refining vessel, with a 2M barrel
capacity, is positioned over the Egina deepwater oilfield, 150 Km
off the shore of Nigeria. The couplings connect the electric drive
motor to the gearbox and gearbox to a 7-stage centrifugal pump.
Solution:
The pump OEM contacted Bibby Turboflex for its extensive
coupling engineering expertise, quality manufacturing and
reasonable lead times. Bibby supplied modified standard
Turboflex HF Series disc couplings with tapered bores to meet
the challenging application requirements.

12. Anchor Handling
Vessel Winches
Problem:
Several heavy-duty clutches and brakes were required for use
on a large load winch drive system aboard an anchor handling
tug supply (AHTS) vessel. The vessel features a large
diameter drum, 600 ton capacity winch and two smaller
diameter drums, 500 ton capacity winches which all
accommodate cable up to
3 in. diameter.
Solution:
Wichita supplied Kopper Kool clutches which provide
enhanced operational safety due to their ability to slip under
torque overload during snag conditions. In rough seas, the
clutches slip to provide wave compensation while reducing
overload/strain on the winch drive system.

13. Diving Support Vessel
Problem:
A leading winch manufacturer asked Wichita to provide
brakes that can withstand the salt water environment of
deck-mounted mooring winches on diving support vessels
(DSVs). The brakes are part of a 4-point, computer-
controlled mooring system that maintains the ships position
over a dive site.
Solution:
Wichita developed the AquaMaKKs LI-SSB which has been
specially modified to withstand highly corrosive sea spray
and direct seawater splash prevalent in marine deck areas.
• Low inertia, air-cooled, spring-set, air tube release, high-
torque brakes

14. Seabed Dredging Vessels
Problem:
Original conical clutches needed to be replaced on the main
dredge pumps on two dredging vessels. The vessels use
huge, toothed dragheads to channel sand from the seabed
into an intake where powerful suction pumps pull sand into
the ship’s hopper.
Solution:

15. Dredging Vessel
Centrifugal Pump Drive
Problem:
A leading dredging owner/operator needed to replace a
competitor-supplied clutch/coupling combination on one of its
fleet of “Trailing Suction Hopper Dredgers”. The clutch is
positioned between the forward end of the main propulsion
diesel engine and input shaft to the dredge pump gearbox.
Solution:
Wichita supplied its new sinter metallic friction variant of its
pneumatically actuated MSV (Marine Standard Ventilated)
clutch/coupling that was designed to “drop-in” to the existing
space to avoid expensive re-engineering costs.

16. Dredging System
Problem:
A major manufacturer of dredging systems needed a reliable
coupling solution with a small footprint for use on a new
dredging vessel platform. The system features a 1200 HP diesel
engine that drives a complex, custom-designed, eight-pad
gearbox with primary output to a two-speed clutch that drives
the system’s main pump, as well as hydraulic pump pads to
operate a crane and auxiliaries.
Solution:
The Stromag engineering team designed a unique hybrid
Periflex CR (PCR) shaft coupling to meet the challenging
dredging rig application requirements. The modified PCR
coupling utilized a rubber element from a similar Stromag model
PCS coupling and a bolt-on adaptor hub with a splined bore.
Extensive torsional vibration analysis (TVA) work was
completed on this complex multi-stream system of 9 driven
components.

17. Underwater Mining Dredge
Problem:
A sand mining dredge required a 120 ft. long coupling drive
(longest ever built) to connect a 600HP motor to a suction
pump operating at the bottom of an underwater sand mine.
Solution:
TB Wood’s engineers designed a custom hub with unique
flange disc pack and tapered bushing mounting

18. Workboat Fire Pumps
Problem:
A leading marine and industrial powertrain manufacturer
needed a clutch solution for a new diesel engine remote
PTO assembly used on workboats, tugboats, supply boats
and dredging equipment which typically require 300 HP to
500 HP hydraulic and fire pumps.
Solution:
The Warner Electric SFC-1525 stationary field clutch was
chosen for the new PTO due to it’s size and design, it’s
remote electrical activation and Warner Electric’s reputation
for cost-effective reliability.
• The complete shaft-mounted assembly consists of an
SFC-1525 clutch (with splined hub and adaptor and taper
lock bushings), a torque limiter, a coupling and bearings.

19. Ferry Propulsion System
Problem:
A coupling solution was needed for a new catamaran ferry
propulsion system that was powered by twin diesel engines
connected to a gearbox which drives a waterjet or thruster pod.
The coupling/shaft had a flange-to-flange span length of more
than 9 feet. The gearbox is close-coupled to the engine, with
both bouncing on resilient engine mounts, so the gearbox
output flange had several millimeters of radial and axial
movement.
Solution:
Due to the span length and weight considerations, the use of
a TB Wood’s carbon fiber composite shaft, mounted between
high-misalignment-capacity Stromag Vector®
couplings on both
ends, is an ideal choice for this application.

20. Tugboat Winch
Problem:
One of the World’s largest diesel engine distributors, located in
Canada, required a reliable coupling for use on a commercial
tugboat’s hydraulic towing winch system. The coupling connects
the winch’s hydraulic pump to one of the tug’s twin 1500 HP
diesel propulsion engines that transmit 450 HP to the pump.
Solution:
After a review of the application requirements, Stromag
engineers recommended the use of a Stromag Vector®

coupling, which has a maximum torque rating of 14,603 ft.lbs.
(19,800 Nm) and an extremely high misalignment capacity.
The highly flexible Vector coupling utilizes Stromag’s GE elastic
element concept with high tensile strength fabric embedded into
the rubber. This design has years of proven performance in
diverse applications worldwide.

21. Vessel Mooring Winches
Problem:
Twiflex Ltd. recently supplied brakes to a major offshore
winch manufacturer based in the Netherlands for use on
ship-to-ship mooring winches. During towing operations, if the
tow cable tension is greater than 30 tons, due to the action of
the waves between the two vessels, the brakes slip to protect
the winch and cable. If the load is below 30 tons the cable is
reeled in.
Solution:
Twiflex VKSD-FL (floating) spring-applied, hydraulically-
released brakes were supplied, each rated at 119 KN braking
force for a 2mm pad air gap.

Coast Guard Response Boat
Problem:
An overrunning clutch solution was needed for use on the
U.S. Coast Guard’s RBM patrol boat fleet. The 45-foot boats
perform a variety of missions including search and rescue,
marine environmental protection, law enforcement, and coastal
security. Powered by twin 825 HP turbocharged diesel
engines, the boats can reach a maximum speed of 42.5 knots
(49 mph).
Solution:
Formsprag supplied modified GFR ball bearing supported,
ramp & roller clutches to meet the demanding application
requirements. The clutch also improves the operating life of the
drive line components by eliminating torque reversals that
can occur when there is rapid deceleration in the boat’s diesel
engine speed. The clutches are plated for enhanced corrosion
resistance.

Navy Destroyer
Lifeboat Davits
Problem:
A new clutch solution was needed for use on the lifeboat davits
aboard U.S. navy destroyers. The clutches are used on the
davit winch drives to provide an optional manual drive to the
normal powered drive system which smoothly raises and lowers
the lifeboats. The existing clutches were failing during routine
manual operational checks causing the lifeboats to free fall to
water level.
Solution:
Formsprag Clutch engineers worked closely with the davit
gearbox OEM to develop a modified FL-52A Form-Lock bi-
directional clutch to meet the stringent naval standards.

24. Marine Hatches
Problem:
A leading distributor of high-performance marine products was
looking for a reliable line of electric actuators for use in boat
engine compartment hatch lifts. Lifting the heavy cover/hatch
above the large engine compartment can be a strenuous
challenge.
Solution:
Warner Linear was selected to “do the heavy lifting” by
supplying 18" and 24" stroke K2M electric actuators with up to
500 lb. load capacity.
• 4", 6" and 8" stroke models with 75 lb. to 250 lb. load
capacities were also provided for use on seat lifts, driver
canopy lifts, and windshield adjustment.
• Units feature ignition-protected, non-sparking motors (marine
motor certified) which are designed for use in enclosed
areas,
such as engine compartments, where dangerous fumes can
build up.
