Problem:
A leading overhead conveyor manufacturer needed bearings
for a poultry processing conveyor system. The overhead
system is routinely subjected to high-pressure washdowns
to meet sanitation requirements.
Solution:
Kilian was contacted due to their expertise in poultry
conveyor bearing applications. Kilian engineers rose to
the challenge and developed a Kilian No-Rust 300 Series
stainless steel shielded assembly with an integral stud.

Problem:
A leading chicken processing plant’s cleaning and sanitizing
process involved pressurized washdowns that far exceeded
normal industry washdown conditions. The high pressures used
would require special measures to protect the output shaft seals.
Solution:

challenge and developed a high-pressure seal option that could
withstand the rigors of the intense washdowns at this facility.

Custom Precision Bearing Assemblies
Problem:
A leading poultry and food processing equipment manufacturer
needed a stainless steel bearing assembly for use on its line
of chicken vicera harvesters. The machines removes various
internal organs from chicken carcasses as they rotate on
an overhead-driven carousel. Multiple bearing assemblies,
positioned over each of the carcass stations allow the carousel
to rotate smoothly.
Solution:
Kilian engineers designed a custom stainless steel ball
bearing assembly to meet the tough washdown application
requirements. The units feature a 303 stainless steel shielded
housing containing precision stainless steel ball bearings
sealed to protect against bacteria and withstand harsh
washdowns. An integral stud was added to allow for easy
installation.

Problem:
Van der Lee Seafish, a leading global seafood processor
wanted to standardize the motors on its production lines to use
as few models as possible, leading to a more manageable
inventory, faster maintenance and less production downtime.
Solution:

Problem:
A leading global fish processing equipment manufacturer
needed a reliable stainless steel speed reducer solution for
use on a new shipboard fish processing plant. A two-level
stainless steel conveyor transfers the fish from a descaling
drum to a filleting station. Stainless steel motor and speed

Tempura Batter Mixers
Problem:
A leading global food processing OEM needed a robust geared
motor solution for a line of tempura batter mixers. The machines
gently mix a precise ratio of water and bagged ingredients to
ensure that the batter achieves the ideal consistency. After the
tempura is mixed, it is transferred, via an onboard pump, to an
adjacent batter applicator. Geared motors are used to drive the
rotating mixing cage as well as the positive displacement pump.
Solution:
The OEM contacted Bauer for a reliable solution. After review of
the application requirements, Bauer supplied modified Model
BK17 and BK08 geared motors to drive the machine’s mixer and
pump. The BK models feature PMSM (permanent magnet
synchronous motor) that reduce heat losses from the rotor by
100% and total losses by approximately 25%, while increasing
total efficiency by 10% or more.

Tunnel Food Freezer
Problem:
A food processing OEM asked Boston Gear to provide a
complete drivetrain for one of their new commercial tunnel
food freezers. The drive powers a food conveyor as it travels
through the freezer. Units are positioned on the outside of the
freezer wall while operating in 15-60˚F ambient room temp.
Solution:
Boston Gear engineers custom-configured a triple reduction
gearmotor with only 1,800 in.lbs. max output. The system
features a stainless steel motor and utilizes a combination of
three stainless steel 700 Series speed reducers.

Mixing System for
Lettuce Products
Problem:
A leading packaged lettuce producer required a dynamic
mixing system for a new processing line. A 26' long by
102" wide custom mixing system was designed, consisting of
five sections, each utilizing a 4' long belt conveyor which
transfers product to a 4' wide cleated inclined conveyor. The
system required ten individual washdown-resistant drivetrains.
Solution:

Problem:
A robust speed reducer was needed for a 90˚ transfer conveyor
on a vegetable packaging line. The floor-mounted conveyor
moves food service sized bags of lettuce from a vertical polybag

Problem:

Problem:

conveyor to lift poly-bagged fresh lettuce products from a

Problem:
A frozen vegetable processor needed to upgrade an existing
sanitary conveyor operation within an existing footprint. A
sanitary wash down conveyor was needed to move frozen
peas, corn and carrots up a 40° incline and dump into 52” tall
tote containers.
Solution:
A Boston Gear Bost-Kleen 700 Series speed reducer was
utilized on a stainless steel sanitary incline plastic belt
conveyor.

Cabbage Coring Machine
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of food processing equipment needed a
robust drive solution that could withstand frequent washdowns for
use on a cabbage coring machine. The machine features a 48” dia.,
275 lb. stainless steel indexing table that rotates 60 degrees in
2 seconds to position a head of cabbage under the coring fixture,
pauses for 5 seconds for the coring operation, then repeats.
Accuracy of 1 degree or less at 5 RPM was required.
Solution:
To meet the accuracy and speed requirements, Bauer supplied a
stainless steel HiflexDRIVE combination of the BK17 gearbox and
a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM).

Potato Bin Dumper
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of food processing equipment needed
a reliable gear motor for use on a new potato bin dumper. The
OEM’s customer had been using bin dumpers with hydraulic
cylinders that lifted and lowered the bins. However, ongoing
maintenance issues and leaks caused the end user to look for
an electric gear motor solution.
Solution:
Bauer custom BK80 Series gear motors were ultimately
selected for the application due to their higher service factor,
which equated to a longer life. The OEM was also impressed
with the high level of service provided by the Bauer engineering
team.

Onion Bin Dumper
Problem:
A major U.S. food processing OEM required a robust gear
motor solution for use on its onion bin dumpers. The shaft-
mounted geared motors lift and dump heavy, loaded onion bins
into
hopper-fed conveyors for further sorting and processing.
Solution:
Bauer worked closely with the OEM to demonstrate the torque
required for the heavy bin dumper. Modified BK80 geared
motors providing 96,000 in.lbs. (10,846 Nm) of torque were
supplied to exceed the 90,000 in.lb. torque application
requirements.

Problem:
A large vegetable grower and processor located in Northern
California needed a double reduction speed reducer to replace
a failed unit on one of its pepper processing machines. The
desperate customer quickly contacted his local Motion
Industries branch for help. The Motion sales associate
immediately called Boston Gear based on a previous history
of exceptionally fast delivery.
Solution:
The Boston Gear engineering team quickly went to work to
create a drawing for a custom, 700 Series double reduction
speed reducer with a 1500:1 ratio. Even though the standard
lead time for a unit of this type and size (275 lbs.) is five days,
Boston was able to complete the necessary component
machining, unit assembly and coating application in two days.

Egg Processing Lines
Problem:
A large egg producer was experiencing rusting and paint flaking
on their processing line speed reducers. All equipment in their
plant, including the gearboxes, is exposed to high-pressure
washdowns and the occasional assault from CIP (clean-in-
place) solutions, as well as knocks from dropped equipment,
tools and hose nozzles.

Food Processing Freezers
Problem:
A major food processing OEM was experiencing repeated
failures of competitive geared motors utilized on its large
freezers. Two geared motors are used on both the inner (main)
and outer (auxiliary) edge drives of the freezers stacking
conveyor belt.
Freshly prepared food product enters at the bottom of the freezer
and is exposed to the chilled air as it rotates through the unit.
The fully frozen food exits the freezer near the top of the unit for
transfer to a packaging line.
Solution:
The OEM contacted Bauer to provide a more reliable,
maintenance-free solution. After careful review of the customer’s
machine, Bauer application engineers developed custom
stainless steel BG50 inline geared motors specifically designed
for the machine’s main rotational drives.

Problem:
A major food processing OEM needed a cost-effective
indexing clutch solution for use on a new cookie filling
machine.
Solution:
HPI 550 indexing clutches from Formsprag were chosen
over competitive units to meet the challenge of this
washdown application. The HPI Series is specially
designed for medium to heavy-duty indexing applications
in excess of 150 strokes/min. or greater than 90 degrees
of index.

Bakery Dough Lift
Problem:
A competitor’s gearbox failed on a dough lifting system at a
Chicago area commercial bakery, the bin transporting 1500
lbs. of raw bakery dough dropped more than 12 ft. in an
instant.
Solution:
The bakery contacted Altra Industrial Motion for assistance
with selecting the best brake to stop and hold the 1500 lb.
load in the event the gearmotor output gears were to fail
again. Ultimately, it was determined that a Matrix 1CD Series
brake was the most adaptable and economical choice.
• Electrically-released, spring-set brake mounts as a caliper
and clamps to both sides of a flat disc

Bakery Tray Cleaning Machine
Problem:
Precisma, a major European manufacturer of high quality
equipment used in commercial bakery operations, recently
optimized their most popular baking tray cleaning machine
which removes flour, sesame and poppy seed residues and
dough remnants from contoured baking trays.
Solution:
Bauer 1.5 kW aseptic motors were selected to drive the
machine’s powerful rotating brush bands due to the motor’s
reliability and special paint coating that causes water to drip
off the surface (“lotus effect“). This yields superior hygiene
properties, better than stainless steel, which is hydrophilic.

Problem:
A well known European food manufacturer that produces a wide
range of food products including jams, chocolates, yogurt, cereal
bars and ice cream, required reliable geared motors that could
withstand frequent harsh washdowns on their production lines.
Solution:

are a combination of an asynchronous motor with a renowned

Problem:
A leading industrial mixer OEM required rugged-duty
replacement geared motors for use on its vertical and side-entry
mixers. The agitators are used in a wide range of applications in
industries including food processing, chemical, mining, petro-
chem, and waste treatment. The customer was experiencing
problems including failures and leaking, with its existing geared
motors supplied by a competitor.
Solution:
Bauer gear motors were selected over competitive units due to
Bauer’s reputation for high-quality, well-engineered products,
responsive delivery times and superior service support. To meet
the customer’s various application torque and speed change
requirements, as well as space limitations, Bauer BK Series and
BF Series geared motors were supplied for use on the full range

Problem:
A food processing equipment manufacturer required various
power transmission components for use on a series of new
cereal grain processing machines. The equipment will run
year round in a wide range of weather conditions.
Solution:
After meeting with the the OEM, it was determined that Altra

Sugar Processing Conveyor
Problem:
A Louisiana sugar refinery needed to install a new intermediate
inclined conveyor to provide an infeed flow of sugar into the
initial affination (cleaning/purifying) process. The facility’s team
wanted to design a conveyor system that used less energy
and created less wear on mechanical components (shafts,
keyways, belt stretch) than their existing conveyors.
Solution:
To meet the application requirements, a Wichita Clutch
Model HCM 12.4 Measur-fil fluid coupling was incorporated into
the new conveyor’s drivetrain between the motor and gearbox.
The use of a fluid coupling allows for a slow acceleration of the
load, significantly reducing the strain on the components.

Bucket Conveyor
Problem:
A conveyor OEM was looking for a reliable braking solution for
a bucket conveyor unit being built for a West Coast dry food
manufacturer. Bucket conveyors feature a chain drive
containing a series of buckets that pick up material on one
side, transport it vertically, and deposit it at another level.
Solution:
Working closely with the OEM, Warner Electric engineers
de fined the correct amount of torque needed for the
application. They determined that an EM210/ERS 68 spring-
set/electrically-released brake could be located between the
5 HP 215TC frame motor and reducer that would exceed the
load-holding requirement.
• Max. holding torque: 100 lb.ft. (135.5 Nm)

Problem:
A food service equipment manufacturer required reliable
electric linear actuators for use on their mixing bowl tipper.
After all food ingredients are thoroughly mixed, twin actuators
tip the large capacity bowl approximately 125˚ so contents can
be quickly and safely transferred to smaller bins.
Solution:
To meet the application’s in-plant electrical requirements,
Warner Linear supplied B-Track K2AC actuators.

• The innovative TPM headset (patent pending) from Warner Electric is
the most recent step forward in the evolution of capping technology
used for carbonated soft drinks, bottled water, milk, juice, ketchup, salad
dressing, shampoo, motor oil and more. Developed with the goal of
reducing downtime for customers, the new headset design is focused on
Total Productive Maintenance (TPM).
• Units feature constant smooth torque technology, that eliminate torque
pulsations that cause cap over-tightening and provide less shock wear
on machine components.
• The new headset allows quick torque adjustment with push button
convenience to significantly reduce the time for operators to complete
torque adjustments during product changeovers.
• A non-metallic sliding joint for top load movement eliminates the need
for grease. It also reduces a potential area where bacteria could form.

The machines removes various internal organs from chicken carcasses as they rotate on an overhead-driven carousel. Multiple bearing assemblies, positioned over each of the carcass stations allow the carousel to rotate smoothly. The machines gently mix a precise ratio of water and bagged ingredients to ensure that the batter achieves the ideal consistency. After the tempura is mixed, it is transferred, via an onboard pump, to an adjacent batter applicator. Geared motors are used to drive the rotating mixing cage as well as the positive displacement pump. Solution: The OEM contacted Bauer for a reliable solution. After review of the application requirements, Bauer supplied modified Model BK17 and BK08 geared motors to drive the machine’s mixer and pump. Service Profile Rapid Response Delivery Problem: A large vegetable grower and processor located in Northern California needed a double reduction speed reducer to replace a failed unit on one of its pepper processing machines. The desperate customer quickly contacted his local Motion Industries branch for help. Bakery Dough Lift Problem: A competitor’s gearbox failed on a dough lifting system at a Chicago area commercial bakery, the bin transporting 1500 lbs. of raw bakery dough dropped more than 12 ft. in an instant.
