Previous actuators required lengthy set up times to reset
diverter arm opening widths and stops, which negatively

Problem:
A leading manufacturer of packaging equipment needed a
reliable gearbox source that could provide units quickly for their
line of cartoning machines used in a wide variety of industries

products. The machines are often subjected to routine high-
pressure washdowns.
Solution:
Due to their exceptional performance in washdown

8. Carton Making Equipment
Problem:
One of the world’s leading suppliers of equipment and services
to packaging and label manufacturers in the folding carton,
corrugated board and flexible materials industries needed
reliable linear actuators for a new carton making machine.
Previous machine designs required guide positions to be set by
hand to accommodate five different cardboard box configurations
that are die cut, folded and glued on the machine.
Solution:
The new machine incorporates electric actuators that allow the
customer to automate the pre-setting of the machine with the
five, fixed positions. Warner Linear provided a custom modified
B-Track K2E electric actuator. Units feature an optional internal
potentiometer that allows the customer to automatically preset
various positions within the full stroke range.

Corrugated Box Infeed
Problem:
To achieve a higher cycle rate for their customers, a mid-
Atlantic packaging system manufacturer increased process
speed on a box feeding system. Unfortunately, the higher
infeed speed created sufficient variation that resulted in
occasional jams. The jams caused a loss of productivity as
the flow of packaged product was disrupted.
Solution:
A Centric Centrigard™ clutch from Boston Gear was
provided to address the jam problem. The carton machine
has a chain drivetrain that generates 800 in.lb. of torque. The
clutch was set so that it would engage when torque
exceeded 700 in.lbs.
• With the Centrigard clutch installed, the infeed system
immediately disconnects the drive from the chain drive
when a jam occurs.
• The clutch has a pilot diameter and pre-drilled mounting
holes to accommodate the machine’s chain drive.

Plastic Bottle Blow
Molding Machines
Problem:
A leading global manufacturer of stretch blow molding machines
for PET bottles wanted to upgrade the geared motor efficiency
on their line of equipment in order to be prepared for anticipated
future increases in efficiency standards. Geared motors are the
main drive for the machine’s carousel on which PET blanks are
inserted into molds and blown to shape.
Solution:
Bauer 5.5 kW (size 112) IE3 PMSMs (Permanent Magnet
Synchronous Motor) were selected due to their small diameter.
Competitive 5.5 kW motors are too big (size 132) and would not
fit into the constricted space available.
• Depending on the size of the molding machine, the Bauer IE3
PMSM’s were mated with either Bauer shaft-mounted
BF Series or helical BG Series gearboxes.

11. Can Stacking Elevator
Problem:
A large manufacturer of steel cans uses a vertical elevator to
create layers of cans which are then stretch wrapped for
shipment to their food packaging customer. The process
allows for layers of cans to be lifted and a new layer formed at
the bottom of the stack. A brake solution was needed to hold
the stack in place after each vertical index lift and in case of a
power loss.
Solution:
A Warner Electric electrically-released EM 210-20FBB brake,
with an integral CBC-160 control, was selected for the
application.
• Holding torque is provided by powerful ceramic-type
permanent magnets
• The Warner Electric CBC-160 control mounts to the cover
of the brake module conduit box.

12. Plastic Bag Closure Extruder
Problem:
The challenge of a Carolina manufacturer of plastic bag
closures was to rewind the web of material consistently. For
the product to work well in end-use packaging systems the roll
of closures needed to be of a consistent wrap tightness and
alignment. The problem was that as the material is wound into
a roll, that roll has to accommodate the change in diameter as
the roll builds and gets larger. Coordination of the extrusion
speed and the rewind motor speed proved to be difficult and the
result was inconsistency of tension as the winding roll builds.
Solution:
Warner engineers recommended utilizing a size MB 2.5
permanent magnet brake, which provided the torque required
for the consistent tension needed and handled the heat that
would need to be dissipated.
• Provides from .5 to 5.5 lb.in. of torque and dissipates up to
15 W of heat

Bakery Wrapping Machine
Infeed Conveyors
Problem:
A leading U.S. manufacturer of automated flow wrapping systems
needed reliable drives for use on its machine’s infeed conveyors.
The series of conveyors move bakery items, including bread and
pastries, into the wrapping machine. Accurate speed control of
the singulation, profile, accumulation and metering conveyors is
critical to prevent downtime and waste caused by jamming and
damage of the food products inside the wrapping machine.
Solution:
To meet the application requirements, Bauer Model BS10 single-
stage geared motors were selected over competitive models
based on previous successful installations. The 0.12 kW BS10
worm gear units supplied feature a torque rating of 59 lb.ft.
(80 Nm) and a reduction ratio of 152.7:1. All BS Series units
feature a rugged gearbox housing designed for operation under
harsh conditions.

Pizza Packaging
Line Conveyors
Problem:
One of the world’s largest food and beverage companies needed
an efficient, reliable drive for a pizza packaging line in one of its
plants in Italy. The drives power shrink wrapping machine infeed
conveyors. The facility had been using traditional stainless steel
motors rated at 70-80 Hz. However, to boost production, the
speed was often increased to 80-90 Hz which created excessive
heat causing the drives to fail.
Solution:
Bauer recommended a Model BK06 right angle bevel geared
motor featuring a PMSM (permanent magnet synchronous motor)
that reduces heat losses from the rotor by 100% and total losses
by approximately 25%, while increasing total efficiency by 10% or
more. Because PMSM motors provide efficiency at a wide range
of speeds, it allowed the conveyor line speed to be adjusted up to
80 RPM when needed to meet production schedule targets.

15. Lip Balm Container
Assembly System
Problem:
A leading manufacturer of custom-designed machinery for
automation, required a reliable clutch solution for use on their
3-piece staple propel/repel (lip balm) assembly system. The
clutches, mounted on the carousel, insert the screw into the
elevator/barrel sub-assembly. Inconsistent torque applied by
the existing clutches was causing rejected and damaged parts.
Solution:
Warner Electric provided Model MC2-14 clutches, with a
torque range of 0.5 to 22 oz.in., to meet the challenge.

16. Labeling Machine
Problem:
An Australian manufacturer of sealing products needed to
improve the line speed and quality in their packaging area.
Their existing labeling equipment used a simple weight
and strap to provide tension on the unwinding spool of labels
that are applied to each can of product. The variation of
tension and the surface abrasion of the strap caused
slow operating speeds and created poor label quality.
Solution:
A Warner Electric MPB70 (Magnetic Particle Brake) and a
manually adjustable power supply were incorporated to
improve label quality and increase line speed.
