region’s economic growth. Harvey Goldstein has been

unique culture and identity. A case in point is the need to
understand Pancasila, the state philosophy of Indonesia.
Composed of two Sanskrit words, “panca” which means five,
and “sila” which means principles, Pancasila is five intertwined
principles, namely:
1. Belief in the One and Only God
2. A Just and Civilized Humanity

3. Pancasila
 3. The Unity of Indonesia
4. Democracy Guided by the Inner Wisdom in the
Unanimity Arising Out of Deliberation Amongst
Representatives
5. Social Justice for the Whole of the People of
Indonesia
The principles were first introduced by Indonesian
independence leader and president Sukarno in 1945.
Many see Pancasila as the foundation for the country’s
oneness and heterogeneity. Indonesia celebrates
Pancasila Day on June 1.
