Pakistan was created in 1947 from part of British India to establish an Islamic nation. It has a population of around 135 million people, 95% of whom are Muslim. Pakistan has both ancient and modern identities, as its territories have histories dating back centuries but the modern nation is only 53 years old. The flag symbolizes peace, progress, light and knowledge through its white, green, crescent and star design. Pakistan's national identity is as an Islamic nation, but it also draws from the long histories of the areas that now make up the country.
