WHAT IS DAMP SURFACE?
Dampness is the
presence of unwanted
moisture in the
structure of a building.
It is, as above, where
water has got into the
home, and onto
surfaces, or into places,
where it’s existence
will encourage
spreading of the
affected area and the
problem becoming
much worse.
CAUSES:
Porous masonry (i.e. under-fired bricks, porous stone, or porous mortar)
Cracks
Defective pointing
Unfilled joints and perpends,
Defective seals around doors and windows
Holes in walls - e.g. where cables or pipes protrude
Defective render
DAMP PROOF PAINT:
Damp proof paint is a high-performance, preventative solution to stop
dampness from rearing its ugly head again.
Damp paint works by forming a breathable membrane that seals the
surface, cleverly allowing moisture to escape and decreasing the
chances of damp forming. Range of paint for damp walls is strong and
resistant, perfect for walls and ceilings in homes where moisture can
build up.
Anti damp paint can be applied to walls that are already damp, sealing
patches on plaster, cement and stone in often just one coat. Whether it’s
a sodden bathroom or a kitchen showing tell-tale signs, damp proof
paint provides a dry foundation for long-lasting paintwork, saving time,
money and effort.
How to Paint a Damp Wall:
Damp walls, besides
being an aesthetic problem
that affects the whole
room, can also lead to
health problems and
adversely affect the
comfort and welfare of the
inhabitants of the home.
You should eliminate the
problem as quickly as
possible and repair the
damage. This method has
excellent results and you
won't have to worry about
the appearance of stains
on the walls
Steps to follow:
STEP1:
Check the underlying reason for your damp
wall. Before you start painting the wall, you need
to find and determine the cause of dampness.
If damp is filtered, as can be for exhaust pipes,
It is imperative to repair the fault to prevent
damp. Thus, the problem is solved and when the
wall is completely dry, it is ready to be painted.
•At other times, damp is generated due to water
intrusion from the outside and the best method in
this case is waterproof the wall
using bituminous paint, which is ideal for
creating a protective barrier against damp and
prevent infiltration.
STEP2:
Check the humidity in your room.
However, in many cases and most
often a big wet spot in the wall
appears, due to condensation of water
vapor. This usually happens in cold
rooms, with little sun and a high
degree of humidity. In this case, it is
essential that you remove the stain so
that you can later paint the wall and
get excellent results.
STEP3:
Paint over with anti-
damp paint. First,
check if the wet spot
is dry or not. When
the stain is dry and
has no rust,
simply paint the
wall with a good anti-
damp paint which
can be purchased at
any specialized
maintenance and
home renovation store
STEP5:
Use chlorinated rubber. To continue the task of painting a damp
wall, it is best to then apply a chlorinated rubber paint to the stain
which is perfect for permanently eradicating the problems of damp
on the walls. It is a type of paint that is often used to paint pools
due to its great and powerful fungicide power. Once you have
applied the paint on the stain, leave it to dry for 15-20 minutes
after this time, you can proceed to paint the wall with standard
plastic paint.
STEP4:
Check for mold. If instead the wet spot has efflorescence or
mold, you need to remove them. To do this you have two
options: use a diluted bleach solution and apply it to the stain
with a cloth or soft brush, or apply hydrogen peroxide with a rag
to remove fungi. When finished, rinse and leave the wall to dry so
that the stain dries
How Damp Proof Paint Can Help?
Reduce the risk of damp problems :
Damp proof paint can reduce the risk of damp resurfacing.
Homes in wet climates are more prone to damp problems,
therefore damp proof paint acts as a barrier against water
invasion.
Easy to maintain:
Although more advanced than ordinary wall paint, damp
proof paint can be easily applied and maintained. If left to
dry long enough, the final surface can be washed or wiped
like any regular wall.
Save money:
Damp proof paint contains a powerful polymer that
protects it for longer, so in the long run there will be less
additional costs.
Make home appealing:
Damp proof paint can be used to make rooms suffering
from damp look brighter and fresher and more importantly
it will make them damp-free. If you are selling or planning
to rent your property, make sure that any damp problems
are treated professionally. A potential buyer or tenant will
be instantly put off if damp is visible in the property.
How to prepare walls before applying damp proof
paint?
Surfaces need to be free from any previous coatings including paint or
bitumens. All dirt and debris should be vacuumed from the surface. The
substrate can be dampened down to help aid the penetration of the
coating. No surface water should be present before, during or throughout
the drying process
Other benefits:
• Tough, flexible and
elastic
• Non toxic, non
hazardous and
plasticiser free
• Quick drying
• Can be applied to
alkaline surfaces
• Non staining, non
blocking
• User-friendly
APPLICATION:
 The damp proof paint can be applied simply by using a brush, roller or spray and can dry within one
hour of the application. The paint dries to a semi-gloss finish and can be painted over with ordinary
emulsion paints.
 Stir well before use. A thick film is necessary for maximum effectiveness. Brush application can be
employed, in which case two coats are recommended to achieve the required film thickness,
allowing 16–24 hours between coats.
 The product is particularly useful for treating moist rooms such as bathrooms and kitchens. The paint
can be applied underneath tiled areas to ensure protection against damp and mould growth.
Collapsed, How to prevent damp and mould Keep on top of outdoor home
maintenance. ...
 Keep the home warm. ..
 Ensure the home is well-ventilated. ..
 Avoid producing lots of moisture. ...
 Take care when cooking. ..
 Remove excess moisture. ..
