Romania's forests cover approximately one third of the country's surface area. The forests can be divided into coniferous and hardwood forests based on the dominant tree species and altitude. Coniferous forests are mostly found at higher elevations and contain evergreen trees like fir, spruce, pine, and larch. Hardwood forests have deciduous trees like oak, beech, maple, birch, elm, and chestnut. Forests are important because they produce oxygen, regulate rainfall and soil quality, prevent erosion, and provide habitat for wildlife.
