Birch trees are a deciduous tree species that can grow up to 80 feet tall. They require well-drained soil and sunlight. There are around 60 birch species worldwide, and 11 are endangered due to habitat loss and disease. Common birch species in some areas include yellow birch, river birch, white birch, and weeping birch. Birch trees have shallow root systems that can damage infrastructure. They produce seeds called samaras and are susceptible to pests like bronze birch borers as well as fungal and bacterial diseases.
