Plastics have substantial benefits in terms of their low weight, durability and lower cost relative to many other material types. A major portion of plastic produced each year is used to make disposable items of packaging or other short-lived products that are discarded within a year of manufacture. These two observations alone indicate that our current use of plastics is not sustainable. Recycling is one of the most important actions currently available to reduce these impacts and represents one of the most dynamic areas in the plastics industry today. Recycling provides opportunities to reduce oil usage, carbon dioxide emissions and the quantities of waste requiring disposal.

Bioplastics are plastic materials produced from renewable biomass sources, such as vegetable fats and oils, corn starch, straw, woodchips, sawdust, recycled food waste, etc. Bioplastic can be made from agricultural by-products and also from used plastic bottles and other containers using microorganisms.

1. PETE- Polyethylene Terephtalate
The brand name is Dacron
It is a thermoplastic that is used in synthetic
fibers such as -Beverage, food and other
liquid containers -Thermoforming
applications -Engineering resins often in
combination with glass fiber
Because PETE is an excellent water and moisture
barrier material, plastic bottles made from PETE
are widely used for soft drinks
The majority of the world's PETE production is
for synthetic fibers (more than 60), with bottle
production accounting for around 30 of global
demand
This form of plastic is one of the most commonly
recycled of the seven types
In terms of textile applications, PETE is
referred to by its common name, polyester. The
acronym "PETE" is generally used in relation to
packaging.

• However, the European Commission is working on the elaboration of regulations
for the labelling of bio-based plastics

OFFICIAL LABELS (EU)
The definitions for industrially compostable materials differ slightly across
regions (EN13432 for Europe, ASTM D400 and D6868 for the US). A material is
in essence industrially compostable if it meets the following four criteria:
• Chemical characteristics: it contains at least 50% organic matter (based on
dry weight) and does not exceed a given concentration for some heavy metals.
• Biodegradation: it biodegrades by at least 90% (by weight) within six months
under controlled composting conditions (temperature of 58 +/- 2°C).
• Disintegration: it fragments into pieces smaller than 2 mm under controlled
composting conditions within 12 weeks.
• Ecotoxicity: the compost obtained at the end of the process does not cause
any negative effects (which could be measured, for example, by the effect on
germination and growth of plants)
