An ox-bow lake forms when a river meander becomes cut off from the main channel of the river. As a river meanders, it can develop tight bends called meander necks. When the river floods, it may break through the narrow neck, leaving the tight bend as an isolated body of water known as an ox-bow lake. Over time, vegetation will colonize the newly formed ox-bow lake.
