Local radio stations are typically owned by smaller companies and operate within a limited geographic region, like Isle of Wight Radio which is owned by Media Sound Holdings and can only be listened to in part of the country. National stations, such as the BBC's eleven national stations and forty-two local stations, or Global Radio's Heart station, have a wider reach but make money through advertising or hosting events. International stations, exemplified by the BBC World Service, purposefully broadcast to foreign audiences around the world.
