- 1. Step 1... Step 2... Step 3... Step 4... An idea for a caricature is sketched with pencil and paper. This particular owl was created as a mascot for a local library. The raw sketch is then developed through a series of tracings with paper and pencil. With each generation the features and proportions of the owl are fleshed out and refined. It usually takes 3 to 4 generations. When the artwork is ready it is scanned as a raster image. The loose vector shapes are now individually selected and colorized. Linear/radial gradient fills and other details are carefully added to create depth. Lastly, all the lines are fine tuned to bring the artwork to completion. Because vector art is scalable it can be used in a variety of applications for both print and web. The image is placed into Adobe Illustrator where it is again traced with the pen tool to create a vector based drawing. When finished, the strokes are converted to outlines and combined into one shape. Further edits to the design are then made including varied line weights to give a hand drawn look.
