INTRODUCTION
Wine, as a product, does offer a degree of complexity that not many other categories
can claim. Wine is a beverage. Wine is a socialization tool or a way to celebrate an
event. Wine tells us about the history and culture of a country. Wine is a symbol of
prestige.
Traditionally, natural cork was considered the closure of choice, especially for wine
of any quality. In truth, natural cork has many advantages. It is natural, flexible and
compressible with amazing anti slip properties. It is also biodegradable, 100%
recyclable and, cork forests promote biodiversity. Most important natural cork has
proven to be extremely suitable for long term wine aging. But wineries are switching
to screw caps and other alternative closures to ensure quality and reduce the
possibility of contamination with TCA (the chemical compound 2,4,6
trichloroanisole), which a wine gets with a faulty cork leaving behind the musty and
damp smell but there is still the hesitation thinking that screw caps may not be
provided with the same aging effect as the wines under cork does. An important
advantage of the screw cap is that it really preserves the aromatic freshness and
youthfulness of a wine (The Kitchen, 2008).
The type of closure selected for wine has
Racism And Racism
The history of racism is not what Americans were taught growing up. Slavery did
not end with the emancipation proclamation and we still see effects of our dark
past to this day. Racism will never be fully eradicated but we have had events and
court ruling that have made major strides in changing our country. Growing up, I
was taught about slaves in that they were these savages and Africans would enslave
each other. In Howards Zinn s A People s History of the United States, he explains
how the Africans were just as advanced as countries in Europe and had included
large urban centers, skilled farming, iron, and remarkable achievements (Zinn,
1980, p. 26). The only difference between the countries in Africa and Europe is the
Africans were as brutal as the Europeans. In Roots episode 1 they show the process
of the enslavement of the Africans and how the Africans had a civilized form of
life. The western world had a need for labor in their capitalist system and used
racism to justify enslaving people. The Civil war was not about slavery, rather the
North used slavery as a tool in an attempt to weaken the south. Americans are taught
about Abraham Lincoln being a mythological hero to all slaves, however, Lincoln
battled with his view on racehimself. In a speech in 1858 Lincoln said, And in as
much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the
position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man is in favor of having
History of the American Mafia Essay
History of the American Mafia
Imagine living in a world where crime ruled. A world where gangsters were more
powerful than politicians, owned the police, and ran the city in whatever way they
felt. They robbed whom they wanted and killed when they didn t get their way. Now
stop imagining and realize that this happened here in the United States of America in
the 1920 s. It was run by an organization made up mainly of Italians called the Mafia.
The word Mafia itself has many meanings. In Arabic it means refuge , which refers
to the origins of the Mafia as a society that fled to the hills of Italy to avoid attack.
Some Italians hold it as a word of high respect implying strength, courage, agility,
quickness, endurance, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This code states that all family based activities are above all domestic family
matters in the home, it enforces silence, a strike upon another member is like a
strike on the boss himself. Violating any of these laws is punishable by death with no
trial or remorse (Whizkid01 3). This one value is what kept Mafia families powerful
and prosperous. As the Mafia grew in America, they prospered off illegal gambling
and prostitution. It wasn t until 1919 with the ratification of the 18th Amendment to
the Constitution that the Mafia really gained power. The 18th amendment banned the
distribution and manufacturing of alcoholic beverages in America (Prohibition 2).
Although this amendment meant nothing but good, it did the exact opposite to
America. While politicians saw an improved nation with this amendment, criminals
saw green. Americans now thought drinking as a thrill, it was something illegal
that they can do but get away with. It was the rush of getting away with it that
made speakeasies so popular. Speakeasies were Mafia run entertainment clubs,
consisting of an open bar of the finest bootlegged liquor along with dining and
entertainment (Prohibition 5). One of the most successful Mafia bosses involved in
bootlegging and prostitution was Charles Lucky Luciano. He was born in 1897 in
Sicily, Italy. At the age of 9 he moved to the Lower East Side of New York. In 1920
he began his own prostitution
The Red Badge Of Courage Is Henry A Coward
In the Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane the main character Henry (the
youth) is portrayed as a prideful and a coward character. In the beginning of the
book his mom constantly tries to persuade him not going to war. He was told by his
mother many times that he was not ready physically and mentally to go out into
battle. She warns him that he should not try to be the Rambo and you don t always
have to be the hero. Although Henry disobeys his mom s tips in warsuch as, avoid
being too prideful in any situation, refrain from being a coward, and sometimes you
don t always have to be the hero; but seems to disobey her thoughts.
Henry is the type of character that we know in many of the books we read.
Constantly he is thinking that he is
One Day In The Life Of Ivan Denisovich Point Of View
1.1 Point of View is the eyes of the story, it is the main way you see how the story
takes place. In One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, the story is presented in
first person as we see Ivan navigate through the difficulties found living in a Soviet
prison camp. In the case One Day in the Life, thoughts like Ivan remembering to but
his needle in his hat to avoid getting caught lets readers see how he can survive in
the Siberian wasteland. Point of view can also lead to confusion as well, like in A
Visit to the Museum where the main charactertells a tale of his quest to get a painting
out of a museum in France and ends up getting arrested in Russia. The point of view
of the story leads to the confusion as the narrator takes us through an ever growing
museum. The world through the eyes of a... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The narrator explains why the Birch Copse tree is his favorite and why he does not
particularly care for the tall Aspen trees. Turgenev gives the trees many human
characteristics during the first few paragraphs, characteristics that are also found
in the two trysting fellows later. The Birch tree is characterized as being white and
lusterless, as well as, white as fresh fallen snow, before the cold rays of the winter
sun have caressed it. This quote paints shines a light on their relationship that we
do not find during the conversation. White being the dominant color of the tree
paints Akulina being as pure as a fresh snow in a desolate corner of the forest
where no paw or boot prints ruins the perfect blanket of snow, only for the top
layer to be hardened like the skin of a girl after the man of her dreams leaves her.
Viktor has touched young Akulina very deeply personally, even if their relationship
has not turned to a sexual one; leaving her hardened by the experience. While Viktor

Dd303 “the Way We Speak Determines How We
Think”....
Option 1 The way we speak determines how we think . Critically evaluate this
statement, drawing on the key theories and research that describe the relationship
between language and thought. Language has traditionally been characterized by
Philosophers as a cognitive tool used to freely externalize ones thoughts (Green, 2010
as cited in Kaye, 2010). The relationship between language, thought, culture and
reality has occupied the minds of many for centuries. Early theorists argued that
language and thought were two separate systems which enter into an array of
interconnected cognitive structures (Chomsky, 1983). Extreme nativists and
constructivists are key proponents of innateness and argued that knowledge and...

Criticisms of his theory are highlighted as complete disregard for meaning and the
social aspects or environment at which a child first acquires its words. Other
critiques look at evidence produced by children with a hearing impairment.
Questions surround what kind of parameters they would apply when using sign
language. If Chomsky s (2006) theory is to be correct then, it does not explain how
children who learn two languages at once can apply parameter settings (Messer, 2000
cited in Green, 2010). Contrasting with the nativist approach, linguistic determinism
argued in support for the notion that language influences or even determines how we
speak. These ideas were first presented in the early 1930 s by Edward Sapir and
Benjamin Lee Whorf, who studied how languages vary and proposed ways that
speakers of different tongues may think differently. Due to lack of empirical evidence
at the time, their ideas of determinism (Whorfian hypothesis) were rejected but later
reinstated with a weaker, less controversial notion of linguistic relativism, suggesting
how language influences thought rather than determines it. (Green, 2010) Firstly
many of the early studies supporting Whorf s hypothesis derived from studies of
colour perception and naming. Brown and Lenneberg, (1954) found cross cultural
differences in the speed of colour naming and recognition, related to colour terms in
different languages, though the study found correlations rather than a
Middle Ages Research Paper
As a new era called The Middle Ages emerged from the fall of the Roman Empire,
the Catholic Church rose to a dominant religious and political power. The Roman
Empire became a religious empire in the early Middle Ages, then later developed
into the Holy Roman Empire when Charlemagne was crowned by Pope Leo III and
became the first emperor to serve under papal authority.
The early part of the Middle Ages is called the Dark Ages for various reasons. First,
during this period, there was a stagnation of intellectual development or advancement.
Second, The feudalism was the major form of the political system, giving little
opportunity for poor people to improve their life and social status. Next, the Catholic
church with the power of the imperial state behind ... Show more content on

As a result, Ireland s introduction of Christianity did not come from Roman Catholic,
but from their Celtic faith (Kienel, 1998, p. 69). Irish people loved learning, and the
education was purely scripture based, and the level of learning was superior to others
in the Catholic Empire.
In Germany, Emperor Charlemagne, the first emperor of the Holy Roman Empire
made a great contribution to education when he invited Alcuin, a schoolmaster from
England to revive his palace school. Away from the tight control of Pope Gregory,
Alcuin and Charlemagne were able to advance education in his empire even though it
lasted only for Charlemagne s lifetime(Kienel, 1998, p.72).
Besides cathedral education, palace schools and trade schools, another form of
education called Chivalric education was alive and well in the Holy Roman Empire.
Chivalric education came out of feudalism with the main objective of producing
knights. It was similar to Spartan education in a sense that there was little academic
learning involved (Kienel, 1998, p. 73) and heavy emphasis on military
Essay on The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho
The book I read is called The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho. The Alchemist is about a
boy from Spain, whose name is Santiago and is a shepherd. The book tells how he
gets around countries, and how he deals with his problems and how he solves them.
It shows how he follows his dreams, and who helps him along the way.
Santiago leaves his family to become a shepherd, before leaving his dad gives him
money he has saved up, Santiago buys sheep with the money. As a shepherd
Santiago travels around Spain. As he travels he is in search of food and water for
his sheep. During his journeys he gave his sheep names and really connects with
them. When he ran out of money, Santiago sold wool from his sheep for ... Show

The woman told him that his dream was, that he
would find treasure in the Egyptian pyramids. After leaving her booth thinking she
was crazy, he sat on a bench and started to read a book he got in town. Suddenly an
old man sat by him and tells him that he knows where to find the treasure he is
looking for, and that he will tell him in exchange of one tenth of his sheep.
The boy agreed, and discovers that the man knew about the treasure the dream reader
was talking about, and knew a lot about the boy and where he is from. After
conversing with him for some time, he finds out that he is king, and that he helps
people with their personal legends.
After teaching the boy a lot about the journey he will go through, the king gave him
omens to follow. Santiago sells his sheep, and travels to a town on his way to
Egypt. He finds a man that could take him past the desert to Egypt. So the boy gives
him the money that he got for the sheep. When the man shows Santiago the town for
a little Santiago loses him in a crowd of hundreds shopping in the markets, and loses
all his money. The boy learns not to trust anyone, and is told that there are many
thieves in that town.
Santiago needed money and food, so he asked a man who owned a crystal shop, if he
could clean all his crystal pieces for some food and money. The man liked the
Santiago s work, so gave him some food, and told him he could work for him if he
wanted to. Santiago took the job, and ended up working
Lady Macbeth Foil
In the play Macbeth there are many characters that you would say are a foil
character to the Macbeth, however, the one who is a major foil to Macbeth is his
beloved wife Lady Macbeth. Lady Macbeth is a woman that is more ambitious than
her husband, she is a person who is not scared of murder, and pushes Macbethto
commit the murder of King Duncanthus making her a foil character to Macbeth.
Macbeth is a physically powerful man with a kind heart because of this Lady
Macbeth worried that it would get in the way of their plan to kill the king. This
worry caused her to call upon the power of darkness, saying that she would commit
the murder herself if she did not have the womanly feelings she would receive
afterward such as guilt and remorse.
The Declining Population in Europe and the Decline of the...
In recent years it has become evident that the population of Europe is falling at a
rate that could become problematic. This problem is contradictory to the idea of a
population explosion promoted by the book The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich
which decries the rapid growth of the earth s population as problematic for the
environment and for quality of life. The decline of fertility points to a view of
children that is particularly troubling. Europe simply does not want children despite
its desperate need for a growing, productive workforce. Certain social factors have
had a strong impact on this problem including migration, birth control, the role of
motherhood and the economy. Populationdecline is indicative of the decline of the...

Furthering this idea as women see having a career as more desirous than having a
family their education level rises and as they seek higher levels of education they
continue to delay childbearing. A woman in a less developed region in comparison
to Europe firstly, does not have the access to birth control, or see the perceived
advantages especially as women s participation in the work force is low. (Weeks
245 258) It seems that only when two developed countries are compared does gender
equality, (i.e. higher female workforce participation) equal a higher fertility rate.
Undoubtedly the widespread use of birth control has a strong influence in the
decline of Europe, however, birth control itself does not account for it altogether
according to several researchers.Eastern Europe uses modern birth control at a
lesser rate than that of Western Europe (49% of women aged 15 49 in Eastern
Europe use modern methods of birth control versus 69% in Western Europe) yet its
rate of natural increase is 0.2 % while Western Europe s is .1%(PRB 9, 13).As a
whole when looking at the trends of fertility in the past century birth control does
affect fertility especially as transitioning from high to low fertility but when
comparing countries that have already declined those countries with lower birthrates
have other factors to consider besides just the effects of birth control. The social
value of being able to control the number of children a woman has is the driving

An Informative Essay On Dan Patrick s Radio Show
The Radio show that I covered was the Dan Patrick Show, which is a nationally
broadcasted radio show that is also syndicated on tv on the NBC sports network.
The show is hosted by Dan Patrick, one of the most well known and famed
broadcasters in Sportscenter history, as he enjoyed a very successful time working
for ESPN before transitioning into his radio career. His time spent at ESPN as well
as contributing to NBC with their NBC Sunday Night Footballcoverage certainly
indicates his vast sports knowledge and experiences that would indicate his
credibility in hosting a sports radio show. Also in 2013 USA Today s, The Big Lead
ranked the show number four, in its ranking of the top sports radio broadcasts.
What makes Dan Patrick and his show rather unique is how he provides a vast
array of content on his radio show. Typically when listening to sports radio, whether
it be a national show or local coverage they are very sport driven and focused, but
what Dan Patrick does is combine Hollywood and pop culture elements into his show
which keeps it entertaining and fresh. One thing which I feel draws more viewers and
customers to his content is that his coverage and content ... Show more content on

varies in its coverage. There is a great balance of sports content, discussing the day

way. This is evident by having Hollywood celebrities appear on the show as guest

more diverse audience to the
What Is The Decline Of Newspaper In The 1930 s
The early 1900 s could be called the consolidation era as technological changes and
competition for advertising dollars increased the competitive drive for circulation
numbers. In response to these changes, many newspaper chains grew as smaller
newspapers were gobbled up and absorbed into the chains or became obsolete.
Complementing the glitz of the roaring twenties, a new form of journalism emerged
that appealed to a different type of reader with its illustrious smaller size. But, as
economic conditions worsened into the 1930 s, circulation increased while revenues
did not. This is mostly due to advertisingdollars being split between radio and
television as both gained in popularity. By 1945, newspapers had declined to their
lowest and continued to drop further alongside continued consolidation efforts into
the 1970 s. While daily circulation declined, chains and printing expenses grew. The
closer we got to the turn of the century and the digital age, readership dropped
significantly as young readers pursued other options for news (Dominick, 2013)....

about whether the independent owners will interfere with the independent voice of

to grasp the interest of more readers with failed attempts to charge for online

declares that the reason readers today rebuked the idea of paying for a subscription
is because newspapers gave it for free at first but in reality internet users tend to

Decentralization Of Corruption In The United States
Definition
The first and foremost problem in dealing with corruption is trying to define the
term. There is plenty of literature out that describes a general definition: Tilman
(1970) first defined corruption as the result of the adoption of a market pricing
mechanism for government goods and services rather than a mandatory pricing
model of allocation Shah (2007) broadly describes corruption as the exercise of
official powers against public interest or the abuse of public office for private
gains. Other authors delve deeper in their description of corruption as the illegal
privatization of state property and the selling of state power by public officials.
This often takes the form of creating private gain by said public officials through
classic rent seeking activities, which will be described in the next section (Vasavakul
2008; Gainsborough 2009; Bai 2013; Morris 1991; Lancaster 2001; Rock 2004; Rose
Ackerman 2000; Treisman 2000).
Other scholars have attempted to take different approaches to defining corruption in
terms of a centralized versus decentralized nature. Shleifer and Vishny (1993)
conclude that government bureaucracies and agencies act as monopolists selling
complementary government produced goods that are legally required for private
sector activity. Waller, Verdier and Gardner (2002) go further by explaining that
decentralized corruption is a system in which higher level officials collect a fixed
amount of bribe income from each bureaucrat who collects a
Swot Analysis Of Federal Express
Federal Express is one of the well known brands and America s well known
companies in the world known as FedEx as it serves millions of customers through
their service. Frederick W. Smith was a undergraduate of Yale University in 1965,
who wrote a paper about a industry which would create shipments of products like
medicine, computer, electronics, and other products that consumers can purchase.
Even though, he didn t receive a good grade on the essay, the idea that he created
was never lost. As Smith, worked in an Aviation firm in 1971 he saw how inefficient
the air freight industry was to get packages. As a result, FedExwas created by Smith
as he called the company Federal to reveal how this company was created for the use
of nationwide customers. Even though more companies, such as DHL, UPS, TNT
have become FedEx s competitors it still has not been successful as FedEx due to the
technological advancements. As time progressed, FedEx continued to increase in size
and in revenue due to the use of technology that helped meet the needs of customers
globally despite the struggle they faced from competitors and different systems that
they were creating.
FedEx s headquarters are located in Memphis, Tennessee because the location of

the help of 389 members, 14 small aircraft delivered 186 packages to cities such as

Once I d reached the edge of the forest, I stood in front of the tightly knit trees while
staring deep in the darkness ahead as if begging permission to enter. Moreover, I

while gently releasing with each step. Autumn leaves from the tall trees lay
scattered on the forest floor; each of them in brittle brown; there was a sound like
dried cereal being crunched underfoot, pushing their papery remains deep into the
soft soil. The dark shadows of the voluminous trees, also the surrounding bushes had
become the backbone of the forest, standing as passive protectors in a peaceful place.
The sweet surrendering scent of the morning dew filled the forest with a scent that

The Importance Of Being Earnest Or Wilde Essay
This semester in Drama 1101: Intro to Theate we are required to read and attend
plays that confront social and aesthetic issues. I have a love for plays and
broadway productions. So, when enroll in the course I knew that this will be
something I will enjoy. I learned so much and enjoy the overall class experiences.
The first play that we were required to attend is The Importance of Being Earnest,
by Oscar Wilde. The importance of being Earnest one of the most remarkable
works of satire and criticism not only in the Victorian age, but also nowadays,
since it discloses many aristocratic behaviors that seems to be very weird and funny
at the same time. the several interpretations of this play may be considered as an
enough reason for explaining the wit and cleverness of Oscar Wilde. The overall
play fit well within the space of the theatrebecause the layout corresponds with the
flow of the play. The play itself didn t need a large or over the top spacing because
of its few actors. Throughout the play there were at least two to three actors sharing
the stage. The play was done on a prosceniumtheatre and it is stage outlined by what
is called the proscenium arch. This arch is architectural in nature and serves as a
picture frame surrounding the view of the action on stage. The layout of the stages
gives the actors the ability to use the apron more often especially when there s a
moment between actors or an actorby themselves. For example, there were moment
between Jack and Gwendolen that they were in conversation in the apron area also
Cecily and Algernon. The actors use that part of the stage because it gives the
audience a better view and it flowed with the play itself. The architecture of the
theatre adds to the performance by extended the stage to bring about more in the
actors to fully enhance the character. There were choices made by the actors and the
director that help make the production a success. Each actor took the acting methods
that best fit the character they were playing and done things that enhance the
feedback of the play. The actors seem very believable in the roles. They fully
embody the character in many ways from the way they walk, and even the facial
Achilles Is The First Tragic Hero
THESIS STATEMENT
Euripides Achilles is seen as the first tragic hero because he has all the criteria of a
tragic hero high social position, undergoes reversal of fortune, and a tragic flaw but
he does not have a tragic downfall.
PURPOSE STATEMENT Through critical essays, research, and reading The Iliad
, it
can be perceived that Achilles is the first tragic hero in dramatic history.
INTRODUCTION
Throughout The Iliad, it is debated whether Achilles is the tragic hero or Hector.
Looking at the lifestyle of Achilles, it is clear that he is the prototype of the tragic
hero. According to Ian Johnston, This development is unique to [Achilles] in the
poem and is close enough to what tragic heroes go through to enable us to say that
he enters the realm of tragic experience (Johnston). Achilles shatters the belief that
Hector is not the first hero when the story told in Euripides The Iliad showed many
more of the characteristics of the tragic hero in Achilles that we all know today.
The criteria of the tragic hero aligns perfectly with Achilles since he has a tragic
flaw, which is his intense and unquenchable rage, also he is in a high social
position, because he is an invulnerable general and demi god. He also experiences a
reversal of fortune through his faults and crimes. He would be considered the
perfect tragic hero if he only had a tragic downfall, which he does not since The Iliad
ends at the funeral of Hector.
AN UNCONTROLLABLE FLAW Achilles tragic flaw is
Fitbit Mission Statement
Fitness and health is something that is looked upon as being hard to achieve and
do sometimes. Fitbit is one of many companies that are trying to take of the
challenge of how to make fitness and tracking it easy and fun to do. Introduction
Fitbit started when two men, Eric and James, came to realize that wireless
technology was starting to take off. They wanted to find a way to combine wireless
technology and fitness together and after a few months in 2007 Fitbit was founded.
Eric and James were able to create a wearable technology that could track people s
fitness activities with minimal effort from the user. Currently, Fitbit s mission

For example, the Fitbit Flex, one of the original Fitbit wearables that was on the
market, now customers can only get the Flex 2, but when it was on the market it
cost $99.95 when bought from the Fitbit store. It only cost the company $17.36 to
make, so clearly Fitbit was making a profit (Teardown, 2003). The influences that
society brings can be a good thing to a company as well as a bad thing. For Fitbit
the change customers are making from wanting a fitness tracker to more of a
smartwatch may put Fitbit in a bit of a situation, but they have produced the Fitbit
Ionic which is Fitbit s version of a smartwatch. According to Mark Sullivan, More
fitness minded people are moving to smartwatches, mainly the Apple Watch
(Sullivan, 2017). The article talks about how for Fitbit going into the smartwatch
area could be dangerous for Fitbit because how is it going to compete with Apple
and come out relatively ok. The advantage that Fitbit has is that its smartwatch can
work on either Android or Apple phones, so it is not limited like the Apple watch.
Currently, Fitbit is in a stage of growth, but that does seem to be stagnating a bit.
According to Fitbit s preliminary fourth quarter results from 2016 they reported that
they expect to have revenue between $572 million to $580 milling (Fitbit announces,
The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer
The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer
While Rebound is essential to an day to day life, a rebound can happen anytime,
during a performance or just by being sick and getting up the next day perfectly
fine. Dancers have a step called rebound and it helps them push energy out their
bodies to move fluidly to another spot in the space. I have also discovered I had a
rebound effect in life due to Crohn s Disease and I had a major surgery and came
back four months later dancing. As a human being you think of life as being very
delicate but at the same time doing everything you can to live life to the fullest. So
my idea came from a place of healing and recovery sense. This past year has been
very challenging since being diagnosed with Crohn s. And very difficult to find
myself back in effect, of dancing everyday, but now I feel like I am really having a
rebound effect. I decide then this paper could be a way to open up and find some
sources to deal with my rebound and to know that I am not alone in this situation.
First I wanted to know the definition of a rebound in all different ways medical and
the dance definition. As dancers every moment is special because anything can
happen and stop our dancing career. That s why in life a rebound is bound to happen
at least once in our lifetime, so let s talk a little about the word rebound. When you
think about the word Rebound your mind goes straight to the definition in a

Compare And Contrast Jonathan Swift And A Modest
Proposal
Perhaps, Jonathan Swift is a more successful and entertaining writer to read than
George Orwell. For example, novels like Gulliver s Travel demonstrate the talent
Swift has in literature over Orwell s. They both wrote various well known novels
but also, made social critical essays. On this occasion, essays like Shooting an
Elephant by George Orwelland A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. In these essays
may be found big similarities and small differences; being as they are both
criticizing different things. There are more differences than similarities as expected.
Also, both of the essays are of different topics in all manners. Both try to solve the
social critic in similar ways, and that is affecting the community in a negative way

In fact, the essays talk about how both authors used to live, which is what makes the
essays a social critic. Another thing they have in common in that both authors wrote
the essay in first person. As a matter of fact, as the essays were social critics, the
authors wrote about their disagreements with the situation represented in the essays.
Each of the authors gives their opinion of the topic and gives different solutions,
whether negative or positive, but in this case, both knew there were better ways to do
things. George Orwell as well as Jonathan Swift wanted to change the perspective of
the audience through their essays. Although, they didn t achieve to make the change
they hoped they had hope that somebody would pay attention to what they wrote.
Without a doubt, that is what took these two authors to be the successful and
recognized today and be given to children in English literature. Both essay are written
making reference to different social problems but written the same way. The essays
both have important symbols which stand for important part of each authors
Racism At School
Safety is a key point in everyday in the lives of everyone, especially those of
students. Our youths must navigate the dangers of high school on a nearly daily
basis but luckily for them, schools are safer than ever because of less racism, the
building standards are higher than ever, and counseling is more prevalent. To begin,
schools are safer than ever because there is less racism. Many years ago schools
used to be segregated, banning people of other races from even entering the school
causing them to be unsafe if they tried to enter. Secondly, anybody no matter their
race can participate around the school via student council and other clubs. Lastly,
hate crimes, a prime factor in racism at school has drastically dropped in recent
Marx Vs Mill
FINAL PAPER
Prevailing as the dominant social system, feudalism served as a precursor for
modern capitalism. Philosopher Karl Marx notes that as feudalism developed a class
system in which the aristocracy reigned supreme over peasants, individuals held
limited powers in making decisions. While capitalism grants people the freedoms to
determine where and for whom they work, Marx asserts that such individuals risk
relinquishing attachments to one s sense of self. Thus, Marx proposed his theory of
alienation, in which he feared that modern means of production may deny man full
possession over ones labor. Asserting that people affirm their sense of identity as it
relates to their work, I reject Marx s belief that man s sense of disaffection with ...

While critics claim that all people are innately selfish, I contend that people s moral
code is developed by the deceptive illusions they are conditioned to adhere to as
children. In accordance with Freud, such illusions act as an infantile neurosis, in
which signs of neurotic pathology exhibited during childhood result in psychological
problems in ones adult life. In efforts to uncover the effects of children s fantasy
beliefs on memory, researchers Gabrielle Principe and Eric Smith gathered five and
six year old participants bearing varying degrees of belief on the Tooth Fairy. Firstly,
children were instructed to recall their latest experience of losing a tooth either
truthfully, or in an entertaining style. Researchers found that participants whom
believed in the Tooth Fairy reported more fabricated stories, while those whom had
realized the myth, described more realistic encounters. Further, Principe and Smith
found that the degree to which children accede to the fantastic phenomena, directly
correlates to recall errors made in accordance with ones individual beliefs and
fantasies. Essentially, as memories are products of human experiences, the inability to
accurately recall stories highlights the desistance between ones true self and the
realities created by illusions. Thus, the presentation of illusions upon impressionable
youths hinders children s
Risk Management For Construction Projects
The overall aim of this study report is to let everyone know what risk management
is, realize the procedure of risk management in construction project and have a deeper
study on the application of risk management during construction period, therefore, a
better project output and better value for both clients and constructors. There are two
objectives of this study: 1. To assess the most major and common risks which cause
bad effect on construction period. 2. To figure out reasonable solutions. On the basis
of the aim and the objectives, research questions have been formulated. 1. What is the
process of risk management? 2. How to apply riskmanagement in construction

Surveys of various projects under different stage of progress through reports and
interaction with teams associated with project shall be used to collect information.
Initial assessment identifies about twenty major risk factors likely to occurrence in
majority of construction projects. This project proceeds further its study into the
likely impacts of the risk factors on the project objectives. Risk management may be
described as a systematic way of looking at areas of risk and consciously determining
how each should be treated. It is a management tool that aims at identifying sources
of risk and uncertainty, determining their impact, and developing appropriate
management responses. A systematic process of risk management has been divided
into risk classification, risk identification, risk analysis and risk response, where risk
response has been further divided into four actions, i.e. retention, reduction, transfer
and avoidance. An effective risk management method can help to understand not only
what kinds of risks are faced, but also how to manage these risks in different phases
of a project. Owing to its increasing importance, risk management has been
recognized as a necessity in most industries today, and a set of techniques have been
developed to control the influences brought by potential risks compared with many
other industries, the construction industry is subject to more risks due to the unique
Financial Crisis Across The World Since Currency Essay
There has been a financial crisis across the world since currency came about. It
started with the barter system which allowed people to trade goods and services, but
this sometimes proved to be more difficult than beneficial. Then around 600 B.C.,
coins and currency came about. Since then currency went from being precious metals
to paper money. With the development of currency, came international trade. Banks
and the ruling classes started buying currencies from other nations and created the
first currency market. The stability of a particular monarchy or government
affected the value of the country s currency and the ability for that country to trade
on an increasingly international market. The competition between countries often
led to currency wars, where competing countries would try to affect the value of
the competitor s currency by driving it up and making the enemy s goods too
expensive, by driving it down and reducing the enemy s buying power (and ability
to pay for a war), or by eliminating the currency completely (Beattie, 2007). Money
gets its value by being a medium of exchange, a unit of measurement and a
storehouse for wealth. Money allows people to trade goods and services indirectly
and understand the price of goods. We can see the evidence of financial crisis
throughout time with the credit crisis of 2007 2008 and the Russian Crisis of 1998
and its global impact. Although Russia was experiencing economic growth in 1997

Loss Of Innocence In Macbeth
What is innocence? It is neither a quality or a virtue, but rather a state of perception
in which one should maintain. This perception is both a manifestation of self
understanding and social moderation. It is desirable to ensure a positive outlook, but
sometimes external forces come into play, which rob one of this innocenceand
forcibly expose them to malice. This is the case in William Shakespeare s Macbeth,
where the hero s innocence and naivete make him vulnerable prey to those who are
all too comfortable with evil namely Lady Macbeth and the three witches. Macbeth,
who is noble and loyal, is not accountable for his actions because he is manipulated
by influences that he has no control over, and overwhelmed by insurmountable

What Is Optimism Essay
As a human being living in this ruthless world, the perspective of how we see life
plays great role in the success and happiness of a person. Optimism is seeing positive
aspects of life. I as an immigrant I have had experienced the ups and downs of life to
an extent where all I have to hold unto was hopeand faith. My motto in life is seeing
the light in all the darkness that was surrounding me. That is how I lived and will
live. Being an optimist person has helped me to be more peaceful to myself and
more confident. Living as an immigrant in the US is really hard especially for a
teenager who was growing up in a totally different culture, experience, life, and

and shelter, he goes to many inns. However, he is turned away everywhere he goes.
Valjean is required to show his yellow passport at each town, proclaiming that he is

Therefore, even though he is tired, starving, and harmless, Jean Valjeanis thrown out
onto the streets into the cold night. Eventually, Valjean finds refuge in a small church

The story opens with a description of Jean Valjean. The reader sees a man of
middle height, stout and hardy, (Pg. 3) The man wears a slouched leather cap half
[hiding] his face, bronzed by the sun and wind, and dripping with sweat. (Pg. 3)
The illustration provides a visual on what the main character looks like. It
suggests that the man has been through a hard time, and that the story may follow
his journey. Once Valjean reaches the town, he tries to ask for shelter from a poor
peasant family. They live in a pretty little one story house with a light in the
window. (Pg. 9) The narrator describes that a table was set in the center of the
room; a brass lamp lighted the coarse white table cloth; a tin mug full of wine
shone like, and the brown soup dish was smoking. (Pg. 9) Another example of
imagery is when he enters the church. Jean Valjean had his knapsack on his back,
his stick in his hand. The imagery offers a description of Valjean from the
perspective of the people in the church, as they see him for the first time. Valjean is
shown as a harsh or sinister with his rough, hard, tired, and fierce look in his eyes, as

Who Is Sister Carrie Rebel
Although Dreiser makes several generalizations about women at the beginning of
the novel, which might lead the author to be seen as conservative, his empathy for
Carrie s position seems to represent his view on contemporary women. Thus, Sister
Carrie is initially described as having an average little conscience , and being urged
into the position of the traditional women (Dreiser 92). However, despite the fact
that she wants to be a consumerist, Carrie can certainly be considered to be a rebel.
When the Hansons tried to transform her personality, her heart revolted as much as
when Hurstwood attemped to narrow her desires (324). Coming to New York with
her alleged husband, she, thus, started to have a few opinions of her own (Dreiser
280).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Carrie as a character depicts this transformation. At first, she is a model of True
Woman, then she becomes a modern New Woman. She does not want to follow the
ideal women were supposed to follow and, thus, she rebels not only against her
husband Hurstwood, but also against society and the common social and economic
discrimination. When Carrie decides to seek a job again, the story turns and she
changes places with Hurstwood, who is now unemployed. This is described as the
beginning of the new order (Dreiser 377) and is the main decisive turning point in
the novel. Carrie starts earning money, covering all of her and Hurstwood s living
cost, while he does the grocery shopping. We can see that Carrie does not understand
his unemployment, claiming that [n]o man could go seven months without finding
something if he tried (Dreiser 380). Thus, the novel as a whole demonstrates how
this social and economic rise of the New Women is not only connected but congruent
to a certain decline of the male gender, designated as a crisis of masculinity by
historians (Brod, Harry. The Case for Men s Studies. The Making of Masculinities:
The New Men s Studies. Ed. Harry Brod. Boston: Allen Unwin, 1987, pp. 39 62.).
For someone like George Hurstwood, who is a married manager of Fitzgerald and
Moy s, the loss of his ability to maintain his status seems to represent this crisis
accurately. Within this shift, a major change in gender relation follows. Carrie and
Hurstwood move into different social and economic directions, drawing attention to
the restructure of Victorian assumptions regarding male and female understanding.
Dreiser metaphorically remarks this: with the tables turned, she was looking down,
rather than up, to her lover (184). As aforementioned, with Hurstwoods s downfall,
Dreiser might want to point out how even rich and successful people happen to lose
all what they have.

Pros And Cons Of Government Assistance In America
For a very long time there s been the debate over government assistance in america,
admittedly there are plenty of pros and cons on either side of the argument, in this
case I believe that the pros outweigh the cons. America should introduce a universal
basic income as a replacement for all other government assistance in an effort to
reduce government bureaucracy, improve standard of living, reduce the wealth
gap, contribute to better working conditions and create social capital. Providing a
base income for all americans regardless of previous income would greatly affect
the standard of living in america. Replacing all other government benefits with ten
thousand dollars per year for all american citizens over the age of eighteen years
old. Say a person makes forty thousand dollars per year, they now have an extra ten
thousand dollars to add to that, enough to cover daycare or assist in daycare costs
for a single parent, or to allow someone who works three jobs to now be able to to
work two instead. It s no secret that ten thousand more dollars per year would be
helpful to anyone, but for some it could be the difference between living on the
street or not. Yes, ten thousand dollars is most likely not enough for someone to be
able to afford their own apartment, house, ect. Even so, living with a roommate is
preferable over living on the street. Having a roommate is the perfect... Show more

Size of the devices:
The role of the large diameter ASR devices in males are linked with considerably
lower metal ion levels in contrast to the BHR devices, proposing that under perfect
in vivo conditions the ASR has a less wear rate than the BHR device (Underwood et
al. 2011). Although, problems also occurred with the smaller hipresurfacing implants
among women and small men. It was discovered that these implants did not lubricate
as well, unlike the bigger implants and therefore they produced a large amount of
metal debris and produced a very concentration of metal ions in the blood. (Cohen
2012).
Acetabular component:
The BHR hip device is more innovative than the ASR device as it has a hole used
for wires to fix the introducer. The ASR device does not have this. (Underwood et al.
2011).
Positioning of the components:
The difference can be seen in the sub optimally positioned components within 10В°
of Lewinnek s safe zone in the occurrence of edge loading and rate of wear in both
the ASR and the BHR devices (Underwood et al. 2011).
Wear and inclination of the acetabular component:
A major positive correlation was seen between the wear and inclination of the
acetabular component with the BHR device (p = 0.01) which was not seen with the
ASR device (p = 0.6). This suggests either that the ASR devices have a higher wear
rate at all inclinations or that the safe zone that escapes edge loading is a lot thinner
than that of the BHR device (Underwood et al. 2011).

Comparing The Media Techniques Used to Present the D Day Landings in the
Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan
The heroism and bravery of those who took part in the D Day has been brought to
the big screen from several perspectives. 1939 1945 were some of the most horrific
times in the broad spectrum of human conflict ever seen by mankind with
unmatched weapons of devastation and the senseless slaughter of millions of lives
both on and off the fields of battle. The Longest Day (1962) is a brilliant rendition of
the famous D Day invasion of Normandy. The film is quite accurate, depicting the
perspectives of all sides of the war involved in the event. Multiple viewpoints give
the film an objective feel, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One scene in SPR reinforces how death takes its time. One soldier had his arm
blown off, then stoops down to pick it up. Spielberg has managed to give us a
clearer indication of war merely by using the latest technology available to him.
Camera techniques are imperative to each film. By using different techniques, the
director can create various moods, or change our perception on the whole film. We
would expect the techniques in Saving Private Ryan to be more sophisticated, as it is
quite a modern film. The Longest Day is filmed and edited in a way, which uses
the panning shot so it is edited quite slowly. The camera is placed to show as much
action as possible. Zanuck has used the panning and aerial shots to illustrate a
large scale action, without much personal involvement. It is more respectful as it
leaves out much dwelling on physical violence of war where in contrast, Spielberg
exposes war as it is in the sense that there is a high level of violence and death. In
the Longest Day, when the soldiers are running across the beach, the camera moves
along with them. The camera also flicks close up to the allies. The Americans are
portrayed as being faultless while the Germans are revealed as being
How Did The Decline Of Portugal
From 1580 to 1640, the throne of Portugal was held by the Habsburg kings of Spain.
This period marked a phase of decline for the Portuguese Empire. Spain s enemies,
such as the Netherlands and England, coveted their overseas wealth, and in many
cases found it easier to attack poorly defended Portuguese outposts than Spanish ones;
Spainalso pursued a policy of neglect of the Portuguese colonies it now controlled.
Although Dutch colonies in Brazil were wiped out, over the 17th century the Dutch
were able to occupy Ceylon, the Cape of Good Hope, and the East Indies, and to
take over the trade with Japan at Nagasaki. Portugals Pacific territories were reduced
to the bases at Macao and East Timor.
In 1661 the Portuguese gave Bombay to England
The Emt Profession Needs Work Hour Regulation
Connor MacInerney The EMT profession is one of the few professions left in
America that have unregulated work shift hours. Twenty four hour work shifts are
common among the EMT industry and the resulting fatigue is causing mental and
physical health issues with EMT s as well as safety issues for both EMT s and the
patients they are responding to. I believe that the EMT profession needs work hour
regulation similar to those of long haul truck drivers, medical residents, pilots and
railroad conductors. Virtually every branch of commercial or public transportation
has very strict rules on hours that their employees can operate, except EMT. (Medic
Madness) The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) plans to
announce a research team in the coming years, which will develop fatigue
management programs for the EMT industry. These programs will educate EMTs
on proper fatigue management as well as teach them the negative effects fatigue
has on the body and mind. In my opinion, the regulation of work hours and the
development of fatigue management programs in the EMT profession is long
overdue. There are a variety of reasons that EMT s are working twenty four hour
and longer shifts, and the blame can be established on both the employee and the
employer. Since it is cheaper to use twenty four hour work shifts and it requires less
bodies to staff, some companies will do so to increase their profit margin and turn a
blind eye to the health and safety of their EMT
Dissociative Identity Disorder ( Mpd )
Dissociative Identity Disorder, commonly referred to as Multiple Personality
Disorder, has been one of the more controversial diagnoses in psychology and
psychiatry. On one side of the debate, many psychologists and psychiatrists believe
the disorder to be an actual phenomenon that occurs in individuals that have suffered
through some traumatic experience. On the other side of the debate, however, are the
many psychologists and psychiatrists that believe the disorder is simply the result of
a therapist s suggestion and guidance. The present paper, therefore, aims to look into
this debate. In particular, the paper discusses the criteria in which one is diagnosed
with Dissociative Identity Disorder, explores the history of the disorder, and presents
both sides of the controversy of the disorder.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), or Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), has
a seemingly long history. Some psychologists and psychiatrist reason that cave
painting from the Paleolithic era depicting shamans changing into animals and
embodying spirits is evidence of multiple personalities (Cohen 88). Written
evidence dates back to as far as the 18th century in which talks of a 20 year old
German woman who exchanged personalities with, that is adopted the personality
of, a French aristocrat but was unable to recall this personality when later
questioned about it (Cohen 89). The 19th century saw the works of Jean Pierre and
William James in the discovery of a system of ideas split
Essay on Reasons for United States Involvement in World...
Reasons for United States Involvement in World War I
At first the public opinion of Americans was firmly set on neutrality. The majority of
people had little or no concerns of the affairs of the rest of the world why should
America interfere with the conflicts of other nations? Americans supported a policy
of isolationism, and Democrat Woodrow Wilsonwas re elected in 1916 on the
grounds that he had kept them out of the war. The president also knew only too well
that many Americans were unsympathetic towards Britain. There were German
Americans who routed for a German victory, whilst Irish Americans disliked British
rule over Ireland. On top of this, the Jewish Russians who had fled from the ... Show

Of the 1198 passengers who died, 128 of these were American. This aroused great
anger in Americans, and further attacks followed as in June the German government
announced passenger ships would be sunk without warning. The sinking of the
Lusitania was used in British propaganda to remind the US citizens of the lives that
had been lost due to Germany, hence they should join the war to defeat them.
The Germans decided to return to the policy of unrestricted submarine attacks on
shipping in January 1917. The Submarines were not able to sink well organised
military ships and this is probably why passenger ships were attacked. Diplomatic
relations between Germany and America were broken off by Wilson when and
American liner was sunk on 3 February. This act taken by Germany was a big gamble
to try to relieve the stalemate situation on the Western front, but this was an important
reason towards America becoming involved in the way.
That same month, Alfred Zimmerman sent orders to the German Ambassador in
Mexico to try to enlist support against the US. Mexico would be rewarded with the
opportunity to regain territory, supposedly theirs, which was now part of the US. The
note was intercepted by the British secret service, and when it published in March,
Americans were outraged and infuriated. This was another gamble, but far more
reckless. The stalemate had left their
Analysis Of The Movie The Tv Series Californication
American Culture can be displayed in many forms in a variety of shows, but the TV
series Californication is one that expresses both the good and the bad parts about
living in a modern society. Californication is about a self loathing writer named Hank
Moody trying to repair his relationship with his daughter Becca and her mother Karen
while simultaneously trying to fight his sex addiction, his budding addiction to drugs
and the inability to stop making bad decisions (Kapinos, IMDb). This show depicts
American Culture through the main characters lives through tragedy, family, romantic
relationships, and friendships.
Starting with Hank Moody, he is the main character in this show he is a successful
novelist who up and moves from New York to Las Angeles, California to turn his
novel into a screenplay. Which he ultimately ends up hating and is unhappy about it
on many accounts throughout the show (Kapinos, netflix). From the lack of
motivation to write and the alcohol and drug binges California has ultimately
changed Hank for the worse. This really shows that there are bad parts about
American culture it tells us how drugs have become a normal part of some people s
lives. Hank can be described as intelligent, sarcastic, a smooth talker and a
womanizer. Despite his love for women and drugs Hank s ultimate goal is to be a
good father to his teenaged daughter Becca and the loving and supportive partner he
should be with Karen.
Hank s life seems more like a downward spiral of

Jackie Robinson, Melba Beals, And Helen Keller
Have you ever had a life changing experience? Maybe, but it probably didn t affect
your country, too. There are a few special people who have not only had times that
changed their lives quite a bit but have also altered their country. Three individuals
who performed actions that influenced both their countries and lives go by the names
Jackie Robinson, Melba Beals, and Helen Keller.
African American students took one step forward to equal education because of
Melba Beals. The first nine black students, including Melba Pattillo Beals

In 1947, Jackie Robinson, a talented baseball player and man of great character,
made history as the first African American baseball player to break the color line
and play in modern Major League Baseball. (StudySync I Never Had It Made
Introduction). This corroborates that the turning point (A.K.A. life changing
experience) that impacted not only his life, but also his country was his becoming
the first African American to be a part of the major leagues. Suppressed and
repressed for so many years, they needed a victorious black man as a symbol.
(StudySync I Never Had It Made Second Paragraph). This substantiates that
Robinson becoming the first African American player in the world series affected
people people of his skin color. Not only African American people, but it also acted
on others, whether their reaction was horror or delight. Eventually, the whole
country, in general, came to appreciate him because, in the present day world, many
consider him to be a great person. His becoming the first African American man to
partake in the major leagues was risky in terms of safety, but it turned out to actually
be a good occurrence, as it gave hope to

Wine is a beverage. Wine is a socialization tool or a way to celebrate an event. Wine tells us about the history and culture of a country. Wine is a symbol of prestige. Traditionally, natural cork was considered the closure of choice, especially for wine of any quality. In truth, natural cork has many advantages. It is natural, flexible and compressible with amazing anti slip properties. It is also biodegradable, 100% recyclable and, cork forests promote biodiversity. Most important natural cork has proven to be extremely suitable for long term wine aging. But wineries are switching to screw caps and other alternative closures to ensure quality and reduce the possibility of contamination with TCA (the chemical compound 2,4,6 trichloroanisole), which a wine gets with a faulty cork leaving behind the musty and damp smell but there is still the hesitation thinking that screw caps may not be provided with the same aging effect as the wines under cork does. An important advantage of the screw cap is that it really preserves the aromatic freshness and youthfulness of a wine (The Kitchen, 2008). The type of closure selected for wine has
  • 4. Racism And Racism The history of racism is not what Americans were taught growing up. Slavery did not end with the emancipation proclamation and we still see effects of our dark past to this day. Racism will never be fully eradicated but we have had events and court ruling that have made major strides in changing our country. Growing up, I was taught about slaves in that they were these savages and Africans would enslave each other. In Howards Zinn s A People s History of the United States, he explains how the Africans were just as advanced as countries in Europe and had included large urban centers, skilled farming, iron, and remarkable achievements (Zinn, 1980, p. 26). The only difference between the countries in Africa and Europe is the Africans were as brutal as the Europeans. In Roots episode 1 they show the process of the enslavement of the Africans and how the Africans had a civilized form of life. The western world had a need for labor in their capitalist system and used racism to justify enslaving people. The Civil war was not about slavery, rather the North used slavery as a tool in an attempt to weaken the south. Americans are taught about Abraham Lincoln being a mythological hero to all slaves, however, Lincoln battled with his view on racehimself. In a speech in 1858 Lincoln said, And in as much as they cannot so live, while they do remain together there must be the position of superior and inferior, and I as much as any other man is in favor of having

A world where gangsters were more powerful than politicians, owned the police, and ran the city in whatever way they felt. They robbed whom they wanted and killed when they didn t get their way. Now stop imagining and realize that this happened here in the United States of America in the 1920 s. It was run by an organization made up mainly of Italians called the Mafia. The word Mafia itself has many meanings. In Arabic it means refuge , which refers to the origins of the Mafia as a society that fled to the hills of Italy to avoid attack. Violating any of these laws is punishable by death with no trial or remorse (Whizkid01 3). This one value is what kept Mafia families powerful and prosperous. As the Mafia grew in America, they prospered off illegal gambling and prostitution. It wasn t until 1919 with the ratification of the 18th Amendment to the Constitution that the Mafia really gained power. The 18th amendment banned the distribution and manufacturing of alcoholic beverages in America (Prohibition 2). Although this amendment meant nothing but good, it did the exact opposite to America. While politicians saw an improved nation with this amendment, criminals saw green. Americans now thought drinking as a thrill, it was something illegal that they can do but get away with. It was the rush of getting away with it that made speakeasies so popular. Speakeasies were Mafia run entertainment clubs, consisting of an open bar of the finest bootlegged liquor along with dining and entertainment (Prohibition 5). One of the most successful Mafia bosses involved in bootlegging and prostitution was Charles Lucky Luciano. He was born in 1897 in Sicily, Italy. At the age of 9 he moved to the Lower East Side of New York. In 1920 he began his own prostitution

  • 8. Dd303 “the Way We Speak Determines How We Think”.... Option 1 The way we speak determines how we think . Critically evaluate this statement, drawing on the key theories and research that describe the relationship between language and thought. Language has traditionally been characterized by Philosophers as a cognitive tool used to freely externalize ones thoughts (Green, 2010 as cited in Kaye, 2010). The relationship between language, thought, culture and reality has occupied the minds of many for centuries. Early theorists argued that language and thought were two separate systems which enter into an array of interconnected cognitive structures (Chomsky, 1983). Extreme nativists and constructivists are key proponents of innateness and argued that knowledge and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Criticisms of his theory are highlighted as complete disregard for meaning and the social aspects or environment at which a child first acquires its words. Other critiques look at evidence produced by children with a hearing impairment. Questions surround what kind of parameters they would apply when using sign language. If Chomsky s (2006) theory is to be correct then, it does not explain how children who learn two languages at once can apply parameter settings (Messer, 2000 cited in Green, 2010). Contrasting with the nativist approach, linguistic determinism argued in support for the notion that language influences or even determines how we speak. These ideas were first presented in the early 1930 s by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, who studied how languages vary and proposed ways that speakers of different tongues may think differently. Due to lack of empirical evidence at the time, their ideas of determinism (Whorfian hypothesis) were rejected but later reinstated with a weaker, less controversial notion of linguistic relativism, suggesting how language influences thought rather than determines it. (Green, 2010) Firstly many of the early studies supporting Whorf s hypothesis derived from studies of colour perception and naming. Brown and Lenneberg, (1954) found cross cultural differences in the speed of colour naming and recognition, related to colour terms in different languages, though the study found correlations rather than a

The Roman Empire became a religious empire in the early Middle Ages, then later developed into the Holy Roman Empire when Charlemagne was crowned by Pope Leo III and became the first emperor to serve under papal authority. The early part of the Middle Ages is called the Dark Ages for various reasons. First, during this period, there was a stagnation of intellectual development or advancement. This problem is contradictory to the idea of a population explosion promoted by the book The Population Bomb by Paul Ehrlich which decries the rapid growth of the earth s population as problematic for the environment and for quality of life. The decline of fertility points to a view of children that is particularly troubling. Europe simply does not want children despite its desperate need for a growing, productive workforce. A woman in a less developed region in comparison to Europe firstly, does not have the access to birth control, or see the perceived advantages especially as women s participation in the work force is low. (Weeks 245 258) It seems that only when two developed countries are compared does gender equality, (i.e. higher female workforce participation) equal a higher fertility rate. Undoubtedly the widespread use of birth control has a strong influence in the decline of Europe, however, birth control itself does not account for it altogether according to several researchers.Eastern Europe uses modern birth control at a lesser rate than that of Western Europe (49% of women aged 15 49 in Eastern Europe use modern methods of birth control versus 69% in Western Europe) yet its rate of natural increase is 0.2 % while Western Europe s is .1%(PRB 9, 13).As a whole when looking at the trends of fertility in the past century birth control does affect fertility especially as transitioning from high to low fertility but when comparing countries that have already declined those countries with lower birthrates have other factors to consider besides just the effects of birth control. What Is The Decline Of Newspaper In The 1930 s The early 1900 s could be called the consolidation era as technological changes and competition for advertising dollars increased the competitive drive for circulation numbers. In response to these changes, many newspaper chains grew as smaller newspapers were gobbled up and absorbed into the chains or became obsolete. Complementing the glitz of the roaring twenties, a new form of journalism emerged that appealed to a different type of reader with its illustrious smaller size. But, as economic conditions worsened into the 1930 s, circulation increased while revenues did not. This is mostly due to advertisingdollars being split between radio and television as both gained in popularity. By 1945, newspapers had declined to their lowest and continued to drop further alongside continued consolidation efforts into the 1970 s. While daily circulation declined, chains and printing expenses grew. • 16. Decentralization Of Corruption In The United States Definition The first and foremost problem in dealing with corruption is trying to define the term. There is plenty of literature out that describes a general definition: Tilman (1970) first defined corruption as the result of the adoption of a market pricing mechanism for government goods and services rather than a mandatory pricing model of allocation Shah (2007) broadly describes corruption as the exercise of official powers against public interest or the abuse of public office for private gains. Other authors delve deeper in their description of corruption as the illegal privatization of state property and the selling of state power by public officials. This often takes the form of creating private gain by said public officials through classic rent seeking activities, which will be described in the next section (Vasavakul 2008; Gainsborough 2009; Bai 2013; Morris 1991; Lancaster 2001; Rock 2004; Rose Ackerman 2000; Treisman 2000). Other scholars have attempted to take different approaches to defining corruption in terms of a centralized versus decentralized nature. Shleifer and Vishny (1993) conclude that government bureaucracies and agencies act as monopolists selling complementary government produced goods that are legally required for private sector activity. Waller, Verdier and Gardner (2002) go further by explaining that decentralized corruption is a system in which higher level officials collect a fixed amount of bribe income from each bureaucrat who collects a

I have a love for plays and broadway productions. So, when enroll in the course I knew that this will be something I will enjoy. I learned so much and enjoy the overall class experiences. The first play that we were required to attend is The Importance of Being Earnest, by Oscar Wilde. The importance of being Earnest one of the most remarkable works of satire and criticism not only in the Victorian age, but also nowadays, since it discloses many aristocratic behaviors that seems to be very weird and funny at the same time. the several interpretations of this play may be considered as an enough reason for explaining the wit and cleverness of Oscar Wilde. The overall play fit well within the space of the theatrebecause the layout corresponds with the flow of the play. The play itself didn t need a large or over the top spacing because of its few actors. Throughout the play there were at least two to three actors sharing the stage. The play was done on a prosceniumtheatre and it is stage outlined by what is called the proscenium arch. This arch is architectural in nature and serves as a picture frame surrounding the view of the action on stage. The layout of the stages gives the actors the ability to use the apron more often especially when there s a moment between actors or an actorby themselves. For example, there were moment between Jack and Gwendolen that they were in conversation in the apron area also Cecily and Algernon. The actors use that part of the stage because it gives the audience a better view and it flowed with the play itself. The architecture of the theatre adds to the performance by extended the stage to bring about more in the actors to fully enhance the character. There were choices made by the actors and the director that help make the production a success. Each actor took the acting methods that best fit the character they were playing and done things that enhance the feedback of the play. The actors seem very believable in the roles. They fully embody the character in many ways from the way they walk, and even the facial

According to Ian Johnston, This development is unique to [Achilles] in the poem and is close enough to what tragic heroes go through to enable us to say that he enters the realm of tragic experience (Johnston). Achilles shatters the belief that Hector is not the first hero when the story told in Euripides The Iliad showed many more of the characteristics of the tragic hero in Achilles that we all know today. The criteria of the tragic hero aligns perfectly with Achilles since he has a tragic flaw, which is his intense and unquenchable rage, also he is in a high social position, because he is an invulnerable general and demi god. He also experiences a reversal of fortune through his faults and crimes. He would be considered the perfect tragic hero if he only had a tragic downfall, which he does not since The Iliad ends at the funeral of Hector. AN UNCONTROLLABLE FLAW Achilles tragic flaw is

Philosopher Karl Marx notes that as feudalism developed a class system in which the aristocracy reigned supreme over peasants, individuals held limited powers in making decisions. While capitalism grants people the freedoms to determine where and for whom they work, Marx asserts that such individuals risk relinquishing attachments to one s sense of self. Thus, Marx proposed his theory of alienation, in which he feared that modern means of production may deny man full possession over ones labor. While critics claim that all people are innately selfish, I contend that people s moral code is developed by the deceptive illusions they are conditioned to adhere to as children. In accordance with Freud, such illusions act as an infantile neurosis, in which signs of neurotic pathology exhibited during childhood result in psychological problems in ones adult life. In efforts to uncover the effects of children s fantasy beliefs on memory, researchers Gabrielle Principe and Eric Smith gathered five and six year old participants bearing varying degrees of belief on the Tooth Fairy. Firstly, children were instructed to recall their latest experience of losing a tooth either truthfully, or in an entertaining style. Researchers found that participants whom believed in the Tooth Fairy reported more fabricated stories, while those whom had realized the myth, described more realistic encounters. Further, Principe and Smith found that the degree to which children accede to the fantastic phenomena, directly correlates to recall errors made in accordance with ones individual beliefs and fantasies. Essentially, as memories are products of human experiences, the inability to accurately recall stories highlights the desistance between ones true self and the realities created by illusions. Thus, the presentation of illusions upon impressionable youths hinders children s

A systematic process of risk management has been divided into risk classification, risk identification, risk analysis and risk response, where risk response has been further divided into four actions, i.e. retention, reduction, transfer and avoidance. • 30. Financial Crisis Across The World Since Currency Essay There has been a financial crisis across the world since currency came about. It started with the barter system which allowed people to trade goods and services, but this sometimes proved to be more difficult than beneficial. Then around 600 B.C., coins and currency came about. Since then currency went from being precious metals to paper money. With the development of currency, came international trade. Banks and the ruling classes started buying currencies from other nations and created the first currency market. The stability of a particular monarchy or government affected the value of the country s currency and the ability for that country to trade on an increasingly international market. The competition between countries often led to currency wars, where competing countries would try to affect the value of the competitor s currency by driving it up and making the enemy s goods too expensive, by driving it down and reducing the enemy s buying power (and ability to pay for a war), or by eliminating the currency completely (Beattie, 2007). Money gets its value by being a medium of exchange, a unit of measurement and a storehouse for wealth. Money allows people to trade goods and services indirectly and understand the price of goods. We can see the evidence of financial crisis throughout time with the credit crisis of 2007 2008 and the Russian Crisis of 1998 and its global impact. Although Russia was experiencing economic growth in 1997 ...the country s fixed

Who Is Sister Carrie Rebel Although Dreiser makes several generalizations about women at the beginning of the novel, which might lead the author to be seen as conservative, his empathy for Carrie s position seems to represent his view on contemporary women. Thus, Sister Carrie is initially described as having an average little conscience , and being urged into the position of the traditional women (Dreiser 92). However, despite the fact that she wants to be a consumerist, Carrie can certainly be considered to be a rebel. When the Hansons tried to transform her personality, her heart revolted as much as when Hurstwood attemped to narrow her desires (324). Coming to New York with her alleged husband, she, thus, started to have a few opinions of her own (Dreiser 280).... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Carrie as a character depicts this transformation. At first, she is a model of True Woman, then she becomes a modern New Woman. She does not want to follow the ideal women were supposed to follow and, thus, she rebels not only against her husband Hurstwood, but also against society and the common social and economic discrimination. When Carrie decides to seek a job again, the story turns and she changes places with Hurstwood, who is now unemployed. This is described as the beginning of the new order (Dreiser 377) and is the main decisive turning point in the novel. Carrie starts earning money, covering all of her and Hurstwood s living cost, while he does the grocery shopping. We can see that Carrie does not understand his unemployment, claiming that [n]o man could go seven months without finding something if he tried (Dreiser 380). Thus, the novel as a whole demonstrates how this social and economic rise of the New Women is not only connected but congruent to a certain decline of the male gender, designated as a crisis of masculinity by historians (Brod, Harry. The Case for Men s Studies. The Making of Masculinities: The New Men s Studies. Ed. Harry Brod. Boston: Allen Unwin, 1987, pp. 39 62.). For someone like George Hurstwood, who is a married manager of Fitzgerald and Moy s, the loss of his ability to maintain his status seems to represent this crisis accurately. Within this shift, a major change in gender relation follows. Carrie and Hurstwood move into different social and economic directions, drawing attention to the restructure of Victorian assumptions regarding male and female understanding. Dreiser metaphorically remarks this: with the tables turned, she was looking down, rather than up, to her lover (184). As aforementioned, with Hurstwoods s downfall, Dreiser might want to point out how even rich and successful people happen to lose all what they have.

This suggests either that the ASR devices have a higher wear rate at all inclinations or that the safe zone that escapes edge loading is a lot thinner than that of the BHR device (Underwood et al. 2011).

Comparing The Media Techniques Used to Present the D Day Landings in the Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan The heroism and bravery of those who took part in the D Day has been brought to the big screen from several perspectives. 1939 1945 were some of the most horrific times in the broad spectrum of human conflict ever seen by mankind with unmatched weapons of devastation and the senseless slaughter of millions of lives both on and off the fields of battle. The Longest Day (1962) is a brilliant rendition of the famous D Day invasion of Normandy. The film is quite accurate, depicting the perspectives of all sides of the war involved in the event. Multiple viewpoints give the film an objective feel, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One scene in SPR reinforces how death takes its time. One soldier had his arm blown off, then stoops down to pick it up. Spielberg has managed to give us a clearer indication of war merely by using the latest technology available to him. Camera techniques are imperative to each film. By using different techniques, the director can create various moods, or change our perception on the whole film. We would expect the techniques in Saving Private Ryan to be more sophisticated, as it is quite a modern film. The Longest Day is filmed and edited in a way, which uses the panning shot so it is edited quite slowly. The camera is placed to show as much action as possible. Zanuck has used the panning and aerial shots to illustrate a large scale action, without much personal involvement. It is more respectful as it leaves out much dwelling on physical violence of war where in contrast, Spielberg exposes war as it is in the sense that there is a high level of violence and death. In the Longest Day, when the soldiers are running across the beach, the camera moves along with them. The camera also flicks close up to the allies. The Americans are portrayed as being faultless while the Germans are revealed as being

Spain s enemies, such as the Netherlands and England, coveted their overseas wealth, and in many cases found it easier to attack poorly defended Portuguese outposts than Spanish ones; Spainalso pursued a policy of neglect of the Portuguese colonies it now controlled. Although Dutch colonies in Brazil were wiped out, over the 17th century the Dutch were able to occupy Ceylon, the Cape of Good Hope, and the East Indies, and to take over the trade with Japan at Nagasaki. Portugals Pacific territories were reduced to the bases at Macao and East Timor. In 1661 the Portuguese gave Bombay to England
  • 43. The Emt Profession Needs Work Hour Regulation Connor MacInerney The EMT profession is one of the few professions left in America that have unregulated work shift hours. Twenty four hour work shifts are common among the EMT industry and the resulting fatigue is causing mental and physical health issues with EMT s as well as safety issues for both EMT s and the patients they are responding to. I believe that the EMT profession needs work hour regulation similar to those of long haul truck drivers, medical residents, pilots and railroad conductors. Virtually every branch of commercial or public transportation has very strict rules on hours that their employees can operate, except EMT. (Medic Madness) The NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration) plans to announce a research team in the coming years, which will develop fatigue management programs for the EMT industry. These programs will educate EMTs on proper fatigue management as well as teach them the negative effects fatigue has on the body and mind. In my opinion, the regulation of work hours and the development of fatigue management programs in the EMT profession is long overdue. There are a variety of reasons that EMT s are working twenty four hour and longer shifts, and the blame can be established on both the employee and the employer. Since it is cheaper to use twenty four hour work shifts and it requires less bodies to staff, some companies will do so to increase their profit margin and turn a blind eye to the health and safety of their EMT

Dissociative Identity Disorder ( Mpd ) Dissociative Identity Disorder, commonly referred to as Multiple Personality Disorder, has been one of the more controversial diagnoses in psychology and psychiatry. On one side of the debate, many psychologists and psychiatrists believe the disorder to be an actual phenomenon that occurs in individuals that have suffered through some traumatic experience. On the other side of the debate, however, are the many psychologists and psychiatrists that believe the disorder is simply the result of a therapist s suggestion and guidance. The present paper, therefore, aims to look into this debate. In particular, the paper discusses the criteria in which one is diagnosed with Dissociative Identity Disorder, explores the history of the disorder, and presents both sides of the controversy of the disorder. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), or Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD), has a seemingly long history. Some psychologists and psychiatrist reason that cave painting from the Paleolithic era depicting shamans changing into animals and embodying spirits is evidence of multiple personalities (Cohen 88). Written evidence dates back to as far as the 18th century in which talks of a 20 year old German woman who exchanged personalities with, that is adopted the personality of, a French aristocrat but was unable to recall this personality when later questioned about it (Cohen 89). The 19th century saw the works of Jean Pierre and William James in the discovery of a system of ideas split

The majority of people had little or no concerns of the affairs of the rest of the world why should America interfere with the conflicts of other nations? Americans supported a policy of isolationism, and Democrat Woodrow Wilsonwas re elected in 1916 on the grounds that he had kept them out of the war. The president also knew only too well that many Americans were unsympathetic towards Britain. This aroused great anger in Americans, and further attacks followed as in June the German government announced passenger ships would be sunk without warning. The sinking of the Lusitania was used in British propaganda to remind the US citizens of the lives that had been lost due to Germany, hence they should join the war to defeat them. The Germans decided to return to the policy of unrestricted submarine attacks on shipping in January 1917. The Submarines were not able to sink well organised military ships and this is probably why passenger ships were attacked. Diplomatic relations between Germany and America were broken off by Wilson when and American liner was sunk on 3 February. This act taken by Germany was a big gamble to try to relieve the stalemate situation on the Western front, but this was an important reason towards America becoming involved in the way. That same month, Alfred Zimmerman sent orders to the German Ambassador in Mexico to try to enlist support against the US. Mexico would be rewarded with the opportunity to regain territory, supposedly theirs, which was now part of the US. The note was intercepted by the British secret service, and when it published in March, Americans were outraged and infuriated. This was another gamble, but far more reckless. The stalemate had left their
