The Tragic Hero Of King Lear
One loss builds on another, but moreover, his greatest loss, and what distinguishes this tragedy
from all others, is his chance of redemption. Unlike other tragedies, there is no salvation for the
tragic hero or any sign of optimism in the conclusion. This bleak portrayal of King Lear, through his
losses, makes him the ultimate tragic hero, and the play an ultimate tragedy.
In every tragedy, of course, there is a tragic hero. A person who has good intentions, but leads the
story to ruin through a fatal, and uncontrollable, flaw. The plot of the book centers around the
consequences of King Lear s flaw. Throughout the play, King Lear loses his land, his honor, his
fathership, his family and his companions. What makes this tragic ... Show more content on

Lear also puts Kent into exile because of his defense of Cordelia. By the end of the act, he has
removed most of the genuine influences in his court, and replaced them with insincere flatterers.
This starts the tragedy, and reveals Lear s tragic flaw: his narcissism.
An interesting way to approach Lear s character is by examining his relationship to his daughters.
There are no mother figures in the entirety of the play, and no women aside from the king s
daughters. When Lear divides his kingdom, he effectively turns the tables on his relationship with
his daughters.
Lear s lost land and authority now transfers to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, and they
deceitfully use this power against him. Ironically, Lear also falls in status, to a level inferior to
that of his own children. Goneril no longer loves him beyond all manner and Regan no longer is
an enemy to all other joys as they have professed in the beginning (I.i. 61, 73). Instead, Goneril
reprimands his father for the way his servants and knights have infected her home (I.iv.237).
Regan follows suit, and insist that The old man and his people/ Cannot be well bestowed
(II.iv.258). His daughters no longer respect him as their father figure, treating him as a household
pest in the very best of situations. This is the beginning of Lear s other kind of loss: a loss of
identity. He has reverted into a more

The Rank Of Eagle Scout Essay
Achievement is a very important thing for many reasons. Our achievements are what define us
and give us purpose. Achievement helps determine just how far we are willing to go to achieve
goals and to make ourselves successful. I have worked for many achievements, in my lifetime, and
I have many things that I am proud of. However, out of all of my achievements, I would say that
my greatest achievement, was earning the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.
The rank of Eagle Scout is not something that is easily achieved. Many people have struggled to
obtain the rank and have failed. However, many of America s most influential figures have won
the rank of Eagle Scout. Neil Armstrong, Hank Aaron, and Rick Perry are just a few well known
figures who have obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. To add the rank s prestige and importance,
those who do receive the rank make up a very small portion of the Boy Scouts who join the
program.
When I was seven years old, I remember seeing boys from the school s Cub Scouts program
walking through the hallway. Dawned in dark blue uniforms, with orange neckties, and many
colorful badges, these scouts stunned me by the unity and patriotic spirit that they showed. That
evening, I went home from school and ran to the kitchen table where my father was sitting. I
explained to him that I wanted to join scouting. He smiled at me and quickly took me to the local
Boy Scouts headquarters, where I was signed up for a pack as it was called.

Ida B Wells Summary
Ida B. Wells Barnett targeted racism and segregation through the world of journalism. For
example, In the article Ida B. Wells Barnett (1862 1931), author Kristina Gupta stated, wells
Barnett published scornful stories. These articles discussed the lynching s and injustice acts that
took place in Memphis (National Women s History Museum). Ida B. Wells was one o the most
influential people in journalism history. She understood how powerful her words were and she
used her press to uncover the rotten truth on the sexual and racial challenges in the south. Being
a woman of color herself she knew firsthand the struggles African Americans had to endure daily.
For instance, in the article Ida B. Wells Barnett (1862 1931), author Kristina Gupta spoke of a
time a worker on the Chesapeake Ohio Railroads removed Wells Barnett from the coach section.
She was then forced to ride in the colored car. Gupta also mentions a time where Ida B. Wells
three friends were lynched when she went out of town(National Women s History Museum). These

Palace At Knossos
Question Set #4: Gardner, Ch. 4
1.Cite at least three different functions that the Palace at Knossos served.
The Palace at Knossos served as a landmark with mythological implications as it was said to be
the home of King Minos and also gave rise to the important myth of Theseus. The maze like
system of the palace was used to tell the story of Theseus who slew the Minotaur while being
hunted by the creature in the Palace s labyrinth. The Palace was also used for storing goods like
wine, grain, oil, and honey which were kept in large jars in the magazine rooms. Furthermore, the
palace complex served as a government building as it had administrative and workrooms on the
north and south of the east west corridor. Interestingly, the palace may have also had an
entertainment room as there is a theateresque design with steps that may have been used as seating,
although its purpose is not entirely known.

As an island civilization, the peace loving Minoans focused almost solely on trade. However, the
Mycenaeans were were concerned with warfare and advanced their civilizations through conquest,
as well as trade. This is evident in their architectures, as the high walls and narrow passages of
Mycenaean architecture appear to be more defensive than aesthetic nature. Furthermore, their home
city state was constructed upon a large mountain, aiding the defensive nature of the civilization.
Also, their art often depicts forms of warfare, The Warrior Vase and the lion hunt dagger for
instance. On the other hand, the Minoans had very open architecture, especially the Palace at
Knossos. Moreover, most of the Minoan art depicts different animals and creatures of the sea, as

Rhetorical Devices In A More Perfect Union By Barack Obama
In the 2008 United States presidential election between Barack Obama vs John McCain, Obama
s pastor mentioned several controversial and offensive remarks. These statements brought
negative publicity for Obama because of his connection towards Reverend Jeremiah Wright, he
was Obama s aforementioned pastor. With his following severely decreasing because of this,
Obama had to find a way to regain his supporters by writing the powerful speech, A More Perfect
Union in which he uses a variety of rhetorical devices such as parallelism, a paradox, hyperbole,
and allusions to the past history of the United States. The use of these devices in this speech create a
strong argument of his intentions as president, his views on racism and the issues society... Show

There is a vast difference of cultures in American society and schools and Obama s goals with
using parallelism was to touch the hearts of every race with how the public schooling system is
failing these children. We want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of
black children, and white children, and Asian children, and Hispanic children, and Native
American children. He not only acknowledges the races of these children but how poor the
school system is. The use of parallelism in this helps create a stronger argument because he
shows he s not oblivious to the variety of cultures in America which feeds into the belief that
America is home of the free and accepts anyone regardless of race, gender, and religious beliefs.
Not only does he use parallelism, he also uses a hyperbole by exaggerating the fact that students
futures are being stolen from them with poor education. This is a hyperbole because the public
schooling system isn t actually stealing the futures of these children, but he uses this rhetorical
strategy to amplify the emotion and relevance of the issues with the public school system. These
rhetorical strategies are effective because of the reaction he can get from the audience. He
reminds society of the issues in every day American life, and what he d wish to do to fix these
issues. He wishes to share the same common beliefs and desires of the common man by focusing
on the issues the common man faces day to day. Parallelism and hyperboles are strong strategies to
use because of the realization and emotions it gives the audience. Obama uses these strategies to
bring in the audience and build a strong relationship between him and the audience with this

Baby Busters Vs Baby Boomers
Currently, there are five main generations. Traditionalists are the oldest generation, being born
between 1900 and 1945. They only constitute 5% of the current workforce, as most have retired
(Wiedmer 2015, 51). The baby boomers are the oldest and largest generation currently in the
workforce (Wong et al. 2008, 878). This generation was born following World War II between
1945 and 1964, with approximately 76 million individuals (Wiedmer 2015, 52). Generation Xwas

Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography
What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph
mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially, Roland Barthes stated in his
book Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a
moment in time that will not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment
you once saw before. A camera is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and
present their message they are trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A
photograph will keep time frozen and allow us the audience to re experience whenever we want
to. The reason I mention stopping time is because in the image named Carmen photographed by
Richard Avedon he did just that. This photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. Richard
Avedon stopped time and created this fashion and street image all in one, quite beautiful may I add.
Many people can try to recreate this image but never will they get the exact leap. From

Moral Evil Vs Natural Evil
There are many people who believe that God is all knowing, all powerful and all loving. These
people never ask why is there so much evil in the world in fear of testing their faith to God.
Moral and natural evil are kinds of evil that we see in the world but have no explanation as to why
God would allow these to happen. J.L. Mackie claims that any explanation for how evilcan exist
with the onmimax Godhas many faults and because of this the omnimax is only fictional. By
defining and identifying various amounts of evil in the world, an omnimax God is contradictory;
characteristics previously ascribed to God are not actually consistent.

Mackie claims that the existence of evil and the existence of an omnimax God are not
compatible therefore, an omnimax God cannot exists. He looks into solutions that might prove
that these two elements are compatible and dissects them into proving that they are faulty. He
shows that the good cannot exist without evil proposition fails that God is god of omnimax
because it restricts Gods power. If he cannot make something happened without doing something
else, he is not all powerful. J.L Mackie takes possible solutions for the existence of God and
presence of evil and shows how characteristics ascribed to God are faulty. God is believed to be

Analysis Of Chekhov s The Brothers Karamazov
Chekhov s use of allusion in Misery also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian
literary giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving
around the aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of
the scope of this paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in
Dostoevsky s The Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov
wrote Misery . Towards the end of the novel, Father Zosima, a figure who acts as a mouthpiece for
Dostoevsky s own thoughts on religion, indirectly responds to the arguments of Ivan Karamazov,
who rejects God because of the existence of suffering innocents and other... Show more content on

But Jonah is not humbled and reverent as Job is. Instead, Jonah prayed to the Lord and said, O
Lord, is not this what I said when I was yet in my country? That is why I made haste to flee to
Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in
steadfast love, and relenting from disaster (Jonah 4:2). Jonah refuses to simply accept God s
message, and instead challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in
the first place. When God responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from
Jonah again. The final image of Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing
for an end to his life. Thus Jonah himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible.
It is only appropriate that Chekhov chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job,
to connect to the misery of his protagonist. Jonah s questioning of God even when facing his literal
presence is also appropriate given Chekhov s own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian
fashion, focuses on the realities of what he had to go through, rather than being humbled and
indulging in Job s deep, yet clear cut answers and happy ending. The allusion to Jonah in Misery
serves only to introduce a hint of Christian metaphysics into the story, providing Chekhov with an
opportunity to deconstruct its influence in society and in the works of his

Cancer In The Elderly Essay
4 Ways to Stave Off Colorectal Cancer in the Elderly
Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting the elderly. Thankfully, there
are a number of actions seniors can take to prevent this disease. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle
and getting regular screening tests, seniors have a better chance of preventing colorectal or colon
cancer.
1. Adhere to Dietary Guidelines
One of the best ways to prevent colorectal cancer is to follow a healthy diet. Elderly people at risk
for cancer should limit their intake of red meat and processed meats, which means less bacon,
bologna, hamburgers, or steak. This might be a tall order for some meat aficionados, but it s
believed that carcinogens may form when red meat is cooked at high temperatures. Red meat also
contains iron, which can damage DNA. For seniors who eat red meat daily, cutting back to several
times a week is a must.
After cutting down on red meat consumption, it s important to replace unhealthy foods with
nutritious alternatives. Beans are a good substitute for meat, and fruits and vegetables are an
essential part of a preventative diet. People who primarily eat plant based foods are less likely to
develop colon cancer.
2. Regular Screenings
Seniors at risk for colorectal cancer should get regular screening tests. There are a number of ...

Why Is Freedom Of Information Act 1982 Important
IMPORTANCE OF THE INFORMATION COMMISSIONER TO THE EFFECTIVE
FUNCTIONING OF THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION LEGISLATION
Introduction
The freedom of information legislation Act of 1982 provides individuals and institutions with the
right to access documents from the Australian Government ministers and agencies. The documents
referred to include any electronically stored information, maps, drawings, photographs, written
papers or any material with writings, signs or symbols on them. It also includes sounds and images
that can be produced.
According to the Senate Committee set up in 1979, the introduction of the Freedom of Information
Act of 1982 was an important law for several functions. It was aimed at enabling individuals to
access their personal information held by the government and confirm the accuracy of such
information. Individuals also have the opportunity to correct information held about them.
Therefore, the Freedom of Information Act 1982 empowers individuals to control to a certain
extent the personal information held about them by government agencies.
Transparency
The Freedom of Information Act 1982 also promotes transparency and accountability in
administration and government policy making. This is accomplished by enabling the public to

The Cuban National Hero Jose Marti, A Precursor Of Latin...
Within this essay I am going to compare and contrast two rather different nationalist ideas that
prevailed in Latin America during the nineteenth century. My concentration in this comparison is
on how ethnicity and race are illustrated. The first nationalist thinker whose ideas I intent to discuss
is the Cuban national hero JosГ© MartГ, a precursor of Latin American modernism. I will contrast
MartГ s ideas and writings with the Peruvian journalist and political philosopher JosГ© Carlos
MariГЎtegui, the representative and advocator of twentieth century Latin American Marxist ideas.
There are some similarities between the offered social solutions between these authors: mainly their
rejection of imported models of society and politics. However, within this essay I am arguing that
the humanistic points of view between them have little in common. Whereas MartГ promotes
acceptance of all people and all races, and considers all people equal to each other, MariГЎtegui,
despite claiming to be racially indifferent and accepting, in fact reveals racist and discriminating
arguments that undermine his claimed acceptance and embracement of the different races of
America. To support my argument, I will be offering relevant examples from both authors most
famous publications, MartГ s Nuestra AmГ©rica and Mi Raza , and MariГЎtegui s Siete ensayos
de interpretaciГіn sobre la realidad peruana , and El problema de las razas en AmГ©rica Latina .

Hunger Games versus The Lottery Essay
The Lottery (Jackson, pg 163 170) and The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) are both popular
pieces of seemingly like, popular literature. Rituals and rules come into play strongly in both
stories. In comparing The Lottery (Jackson, pg 163 170) and The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) I
find that both stories focus strongly on their annual rituals of sacrifice with a scapegoat. The Lottery
(Jackson, pg 163 170) and The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) have a ceremony, a formal event that
brings the town or district together while having no real significance. Both stories also include
similar rules, such as the rule that all people living in the town or district must attend the day that

Webster, definition 2) In The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen is
the scapegoat after she volunteers to take the place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. In
The Lottery Tessie Hutchinson is the scapegoat when she draws the paper with the black dot on it.
The characters from the stories are being faced with death for something that they did not do, but
rather their town or district did, or thinks is necessary.
A ceremony is a formal act or event that is a part of a social or religious occasion. (Merriam

Coleman Social Capital
Social Capital: The Effects on Society Social Capital is defined as the networks of relationships
among people, enabling that society to function effectively. James Coleman s Social Capital in
the Creation of Human Capital examines the many benefits of social capital in a society.
However, most forms of social capital are public goods and do not primarily profit the person
who has to bring it about. Therefore, it s not in his interest to bring it leading to a shortage.
Coleman wants to apply economics s principle of rational action to the social perspective to
increase people s willingness to socialize. On the other hand, Alejandro Portes s The Two
Meanings of Social Capital challenges Coleman s concept by arguing that people shouldn t... Show

In a family, it is the relations between children and parents as well as siblings. A child s success
depends on both the physical presence of adults and attention given to the child by adults. The
High School and Beyond sample shows that students who have two parents, one sibling, and a
mother who expects college education have the lowest percentage of dropping out of school at
8.1%. On the other hand, students who have one parent, four siblings, and no college
expectation have a whopping 30.6% of dropping out. This is caused by the absence of the single
parent as he or she is most likely working. In addition, having more siblings means that the parent
s attention is split and each child receive less consideration. Therefore, it comes as no surprise
that the second category has a higher dropout rate because they have less social capital. Alejandro
Portes discuss the controversy surrounding the actual meaning and effects of social capital.
Confusion arises due its applications to manifold topics as well as its uses on different group of
people. He provided the concept by Pierre Bourdieu and James Coleman which centered on the
benefits of social capital on an individual or a small group. He argued that Coleman focused on the
advantages yielded to individual and then expand them to the whole community with subtlety. This
transition is not well defined and thus put social capital at risk of becoming synonymous with all
positive things in

Application Of A Smart Home
ABSTRACT Residential area consume a lot of energy and electricity. The lack of energy
resources give impact to the rise of energy cost, thus to have a convenient home is extremely
important in the future. One of the way to reduce the costs in this issue is by using the energy
efficiently. The idea of energy saving is applied in the concept of a smart home. This project
aims to develop an algorithm to estimate the energy plans for future periods in a smart home in
order to achieve energy efficiency. Using the Household Demand Side Management (DSM)
systems, the total usage of energy in the future can be predicted according to the demand supply
in the smart home. Furthermore, it is estimated that the simultaneousness between production
and consumption of the electricity will be increasing. In this case, the house owner should be
able to manage and plan to use the electricity wisely. Powerful tools such as MATLAB / Simulink
allow the design, analysis and simulation of this project. This project will in divided into various
stages including researching, experimenting, modelling, testing and designing in order to
achieve the required objectives. TABLE OF CONTENTS CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION1 1.1

Cross Cultural Issues In Human Resource Management
Cross cultural management is the subject field management in a cross cultural context. Cross
cultural management takes place when a manager handles someone from a different cultural
background. This challenge in management is very common as businesses expand globally, hiring
immigrants and work to increase diversity. It includes the study of the influence of societal
cultivation on top management practices. Organizing a business in a diverse cultureenvironment can
be challenging but it is not something that cannot be achieved. Nowadays, some organizations have
started special awareness programs in cross cultural management so that they can work with less
cultural issues and embrace the benefits that they gain from cross cultural management. However,
there are many still fail to understand the importance of bringing individuals from diverse
backgrounds together. Most managers think that by implementing such programs are just waste of
time and resources.
From my perception, I think that the topic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Vonage Cash Flows
Consequently, to reviewing the Vonage s statement of cash flows for the years, 2008, 2007, and
2006 one will answer the following questions. First, how does Vonage s net income for each year
compare to its cash flows from operating activities? Secondly, does Vonage appear to be improving
its position in the telecommunications business? Third, how did Vonage pay off over $250 million
in debt in 2008? Furthermore, where did they obtain the funds to repay the debt? Lastly, does
Vonage cash position appear to be improving or deteriorating? Chapter fourteen focused on
statements of cash flowfrom various corporations. Even though many organizations report net
losses on their earning statements, they also report positive cash flows from operating activities.
Vonage is a real example of how a company can be both positive and adverse in the statement of
cash flows. To answer the first question, how does Vonage s net income for each year compare to
its cash flows from operating activities. One must first analysis the statements of cash flow in
detail. An individual first observes the cash flows from operating activities referencing to the net
income (loss). The following amounts become apparent. The year 2008 the net income was $

years. However, looking at the numbers, it shows improvements on operations sections. Again,

need to see the other financial reports, the balance sheet as well as the income statement to look at
the big picture (Edmonds, Tsay, Olds, 2011). One must consider these reports as they provide

Germany s Reunification Essay
Germany s Reunification
It was all so good in the beginning. In 1989, after
40 years of separation, the two Germanys finally
became one again. But as often, there were and
still are doubts about whether or not reunification
was the right move to do. The hope that two

Before reunification the East was a one party state, where the people never got to vote on the
political party they wanted to. They never got to express their views and ideas. Only the views of
the State was accepted. Almost everyone living in this system, had as much as 50 years experience
of living under this dictatorship and knew democracy only from the media [Christoph
Singelnstein]. After reunification, the people were finally able to experience what it was like to
vote for their country, and to express their own views. The people from the East had a choice in
their future and that of their country.
When the press was run by the State, there was no freedom of speech. Everything that was on the
radio, T.V., or in the newspapers had to be censored so not to contain any politically incorrect
material. Now, after reunification, there is freedom of speech, the people are allowed to express
their opinions without the danger of being arrested or even thrown into jail without any legal help.
When East Germany was a socialist state, there was no concept of privatised enterprises.
All factories and businesses were state owned, therefore all profit made from the various
enterprises went directly back to the State in order for the State to invest in its economy. The

The 2008 Financial Crisis Essay
Introduction
In 2008, the world experienced a tremendous financial crisis which rooted from the U.S housing
market; moreover, it is considered by many economists as one of the worst recession since the
Great Depression in 1930s. After posing a huge effect on the U.S economy, the financial crisis
expanded to Europe and the rest of the world. It brought governments down, ruined economies,
crumble financial corporations and impoverish individual lives. For example, the financial crisis has
resulted in the collapse of massive financial institutions such as Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Lehman
Brother and AIG. These collapses not only influence own countries but also international area.

The Pros And Cons Of Racial Discrimination
As an international student, I was given a great opportunity to pursue a wide range of academic
studies and to experience the world diversity that enriches the promotion of a cultural exchange
amongst students from many different parts of the world. Interactions with different races on a
personal level has allowed me to gain a better understanding about them in person, their values,
and the world; however, until I left home and went abroad as an international student, I, too, was
one of few people who had only seen them in person from a long distance or through social
media. As much as the issue of racial discrimination has been extreme and people s ignorance of
this issue has grown in many countries, I had once denied to accept the difference and created
bias in my personal view and the way I perceived different races. People tend to acquire various
knowledge through individual perception formed simply by seeing what is currently lain in front
of us, as I did. Barack Obama, while campaigning for the presidential nomination at the National
Constitution Center Union in Philadelphia in 2008, delivered his speech about controversial issues
of race that still exist in the history of America (Rai, 646).
The speech titled A More Perfect Union conveys numerous messages regarding Obama s
concerning beliefs of racism. Barack Obama, himself, despite serving as the 44th President of the
United States, had gone through the long and hurtful journey of difficulties in the presence of racial
discrimination having to face the prejudice against the colored skin and a different social and
cultural background. Being colored, preconceptions about him was inevitable even during his
campaign, but his oratory that openly addressed the race which is the sensitive topic that is rarely
discussed or spoken in public, captured great attention allowing him to successfully build his image
as an intelligent and patriotic candidate. Through the speech, Obama not only responds to the
criticisms of his affiliation with his former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, who spoke of
controversial and incendiary statements about the divisive racial challenges in America and the
injustice of the country as a nation by questioning the U.S. government,

The Epistemological Perspectives Of Positivism And Social...
1.The epistemological perspectives of positivism and social constructivism can often be seen as
direct opposed views on knowledge. A positivism approach involves accepting knowledge of
things that have been verified by the scientific method of formation and testing (Pool, 1999, Pg.
91). Positivists focus on the falsification of things and insistence on their verification. Scientist,
Karl Popper, brought new ideals to this approach by making light on the fact it is not possible to
prove something true, but it can ultimately be proven true by never being proved false which can
provide you with long term approximations for knowledge. (Pool, 1999, Pg. 92). The social
constructivism approach answers the issues addressed that the positivism... Show more content on

engineering plays into this industry. It may come to no surprise that there are very few companies

technology is sold to high ranking and important customers such as the Army, Airforce, the
Navy, and national governments of other countries. This being said, engineering is a key aspect
of the company being able to create the most technologically advanced aircraft, with the best
capabilities, while managing affordability. I believe these aircraft are a great example for
showing how technology can have politics. With the word politics I am referring to the
circulation of resources and power in a culture. I also think it is important to define what I mean
by culture. Culture can be well summarized as a way of life or social norms that are developed by
the traditions, values, religions, economy, and ethnicities particular to a geographical region.
Fighter aircraft fall under what Winner would call an inherently political technology. This is a
technology that, appear to require or to be strongly compatible with particular kinds of

Human Public Toilets For World Toilet Day Essay
On the contrary to public knowledge, November 19th is a United Nations (UN) observance for
World Toilet Day. Although it is unclear as to who invented the first latrine, for Homo sapiens,
public toilets are one of the major markers for sophistication as a species. With eradicating
unrestricted urination and defecation behaviors, this helps humans to keep cities clean and overall
reduces the risk of disease.
With this knowledge at hand, one could infer that other mammals have adapted this same behavior
of sharing toilet spaces. In fact, rather than excreting randomly, many mammals have specific sites
assigned for this activity. These sites are assigned to specific locations that are away from where
the animals reside to sleep and feed.
However, where Homo sapiens differ from other mammals, is that human public toilets are
designed primarily for sanitation purposes. As described by the United Nations, World Toilet Day,
on 19 November, is about taking action to reach the 2.4 billion people living without a toilet, (UN
2016). The United Nations then further express how sanitation is a global development priority,
and how sanitation, or lack of, can impact the livelihood of people (UN 2016).
In contrast, other mammal communal latrines serve a more unique purpose than just health. Not to
neglect sanitation as being an important factor in the overall survival of a group, but other
mammals have devised more diverse ways to use their excreta. These communal latrines seem to

effective recruitment and selection process when hiring senior level employees. Below I have

recruiting and selection new senior level staff.
Recruitment Methods Recruiting qualified candidates that are able to adequately handle and

individuals who are not sufficiently knowledgeable at a senior level could cause an organization a
great deal of damage and money. It s therefore advisable for every organization to apply some of

There might be employees working as junior staffs but they have the required qualifications thus
when an opportunity arises they are given the priority.
Selection Methods Selecting suitable candidates for senior level positions of the organization is
also an essential undertaking. There are several considerations an organization must take into an
account about a candidate before hiring them.
1.Credentials Assessment. It is very important to know what experience and skillset a candidate
brings with them when joining an organization. Individuals with higher degrees, received from
premier colleges demonstrate commitment through their qualifications. (McDonald, 2012)
2.Position Matching. Another vital component to the selection process is matching the right
individual to the position. For example, a senior level staff member in charge of the organization s
finances must have experience and knowledge relating to the management of how a company s
finances are handled. If the candidate s experience and skills do not match the position being filled,
then obviously, this candidate is not the right match. Hiring a candidate with only some of the skills
needed for that specific position could put the organization in a very compromising position.
(McDonald, 2012)
3.Personal Characteristics. Another imperative element when selecting senior staff is their personal
characteristics in relation to their leadership

Ionic It was just like any other day when Maggy and Nesa spotted a sulfur atom that hadn t been

that class they also learned that magnesium usually has an ionic bond with a non metal as

The Great Recession Essay
George Santayana, a Spanish poet and philosopher said, Those who do not learn history are
doomed to repeat it. This quote applies to the Great Depression of 1929 and the Great Recession of
2008. There are many similarities between the two, like the causes, the actual events, and the
aftermaths. Several factors led to the Great Depression, which were the following: overproduction
by business and agriculture, unequal distribution of wealth, Americans buying less, and finally, the
stock market crash of 1929. The Great Recession also had similar factors leading to it, like the
housing bubble burst and less consumer spending. In both events, the Presidents enacted programs

economy, people began buying stocks on the margin. They would borrow most of the stock s price
from a stockbroker and only pay a little bit of the price. If the stock prices kept rising, this system
would work well, but if the prices fell, people could not pay the loan back. Near the end of the 1929
year, prices were too high, so people wanted to sell their stocks. They thought the prices would
lower soon. Stock prices did go lower and people were not buying. They all wanted to sell their
stocks. Prices went even lower on October 29, where 16 million stocks were sold. This caused the
collapse of the market.
Similarly, the Great Recession was due to consumer spending cutbacks and a drop in demand
for the establishment of new housing. In the two decades previous to 2008, the American
growth rate was very high. Their household needs also became very high, which made demand
increase. Spending was at a high. However personal income was decreased. The consumers then
had to borrow money from the banks. This gave the consumers debt. So, when the house prices
rose, banks stopped loaning money to people and the people decreased their spending. This
happened because the people were not able to pay the banks back. People also cut back on buying
or making new houses, so household demand dropped. Many say that this decrease caused the
Great Recession. Housing was one of the main subjects that many believe, caused the Great
Recession. Subprime mortgage availability and low interest

Analysis Of I Hear America Singing
If we were all one of the same and diversity was unheard of, would we then have equality? Most
of the time, America s issues lie in ignorance. While we are associated with equality and freedom
there is no way around the question, Are we actually equal? For all that it is true, none can deny
there is still room for improvement. Chew on this, it was only fifty three years ago when
segregation was made illegal in all states and two years ago when the LGBTQ community allowed
the right to marriage. Let us face it, we are still not free from the chains of racial bigotry and
injustices. While Walt Whitmans I hear America singing exhibits the diversity and unity Americans
are notoriously known for, Allen Ginsbergand Alice Walker reveal the truths about the ignorance
power brings among the diverse culture.
In Walt Whitman s I Hear America Singing, Whitman instills a sense of unity and diversity in the
reader by simultaneously giving the characters different roles and the ability to sing in unison.
Through this poem we are able to see Whitman s ideal view of America. For instance, his goal in
the first line was to implant this nationalism when he says, I hear America singing, the varied
carols I hear (Whitman/ 1). The phrase varied carols is used to show the differences among the
townspeople but despite these differences they have a common interest in working together. He
also uses song to unify the racially unidentified people. This is by no mistake, although pronouns

Corporal Punishment Psychology
For centuries the use of corporal punishment has been an accepted form of discipline worldwide
and was seen as an appropriate way of eliciting behavioral compliance that was conceptually distinct
from physical abuse (Durrant Ensom, 2012, p. 1373). The last 20 years, however, there has been a
dramatic shift in this ideal among the international community. The early 1990 s ushered in
numerous research studies that suggested a negative correlation between the use of corporal
punishmentand emotional, mental, and developmental issues in children (Durrant Ensom, 2012).
Studies have also indicated that the higher number of instances of violence perpetrated on children
in the form of corporal punishment, the higher the levels of adult violence. They also suggest that
the frequent use of corporal punishment, not only leads to child aggression but also delinquency
and criminality. There are also indications that societies who view corporal punishment is relatively
normative, more accepting... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While researchers cannot agree on the factors that may contribute to a person s reason for choosing
to employ corporal punishment, they do agree that there are significant repercussions such as
emotional, mental and developmental problems. Studies such as these provide the therapist with
the information necessary to develop better therapeutic interventions and help their clients
understand the total implications or their behaviors. As stated before, one of the primary goals of a
therapist is to bring about change. One way to do this would be to help change the opinion on the
use of corporal punishment. If corporal punishment leads to higher levels of societal violence, then
reducing parents use of corporal punishment should lead to reductions in societal violence
manifested in other ways (Lansford Dodge, 2008,

It s Time to Abolish Speed Limits Essay
It s Time to Abolish Speed Limits
It is 8:45 and Paul has just gotten on the interstate to make his normal commute to Longview from
Tyler. About halfway there, Paul notices a state trooper right behind him. He frantically checks his
speed! Too late!!!!!! The state trooper turns on his lights. Not only was Paul speeding, but now he
will be late to a very important meeting at work.
The problem here is that Paul was just driving to work. He was not intentionally speeding just to
get away with it. Neither was he driving reckless. He was just carrying on with his life. Every day
people go through this very scenario. They are ticketed for driving safely although faster than the
speed limit, and minding their own business. The freeways ... Show more content on

First of all, have you ever noticed that if you travel on Interstate 45 or on Interstate 20 for a long
enough distance that there is always construction dealing with the resurfacing or complete
revamping of the roadway. Have you ever wondered why they are working on the road or
thought that it was just another government scam to cost the taxpayers more money? The
common thought asserted here is that higher speeds create more wear and tear on the roadways.
Another factor of speeding is damage inflicted on cars while drivers are driving fast. This side
asserts that the faster the car runs, the harder the engine works; the harder the engine, works the
more wear the car takes. This may have been true with automobiles made several years ago, but
the cars and trucks manufactured today are quality automobiles. They are tested very rigorously
in order to withstand wear and tear. Second, the government would also like us to believe that
driving high speeds causes more deaths than driving slowly. According to the Transportation
Accident Commission, Last year Victoria recorded its worst road toll in a decade, with speed
being the main cause of fatalities (36%) and serious injury (33%). (Transport Accident
Commission) This group is asserting that a person speeding is more likely to cause death than a
person not speeding. According to P.E. Spitz:

Bystanders As A Bystander In Joseph Conrad s Heart Of...
In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends (King,
n.d.). King s (n.d.) statement demonstrates the major internal impact bystanders can have on
others. As a matter of fact, most people do not think about the possible long term effects of not
standing up for someone or something. Although it may not seem like a big deal to one person, it
could be life changing to another. Many just consider a bystander to be someone who is present at
an incident and doesn t take action, but there is actually much more to it. The term bystander can
be defined as someone who is present during corruption, does not speak up, and seems not to care
about others.
By definition, a bystander must be present during an act of corruption, hence the word. If they are
not present, they do not have the choice to be a bystander or not since they have no idea what
happened. In the novel, Heart of Darkness, Marlow can definitely be considered a bystander,
especially since he was present during the corruption involving the Congo people. For example,
Marlow has already been to the Congo and has seen the terrible events happening to the people
there. And this also, said Marlow suddenly, has been one of the dark places of the earth (Conrad,
1990, p. 5). Despite the terrible actions against those in the Congo, Marlow decides to go back to
try and civilize them in the midst of all the corruption. Now, a modern day example of being

Venture Capitalists are a company or wealthy individual who is prepared to invest in a young or
new business . Obtaining Venture Capitalist finance can be highly beneficial to a small business
as it may be able to acquire a large amount of capital, of which would not have been possible
through other methods of finance, such as a bank loan . Venture Capitalist investment is further
financially viable as a business is not obligated to repay the investment it receives. This method
of finance is based upon the investor s decision to take a risk on a business in anticipation of its
success. In addition to its financial beneficence, acquiring this form of capital can provide a small
or new business with valuable business expertise, as investors are able to provide key advice and
guidance as well as industry connections. Making better decisions can be vitally important for a
business growth .
In despite of its advantageous aspects, Venture Capitalist finance upholds the disadvantage of loss
of control for a business owner. Typically, venture capitalists will require 25% 49% of the equity
and a seat on the board so that their investment can be monitored and advice given . This results in
a partial loss of autonomy for the business as the Venture Capitalist is involved in decision making
processes, this would not be the case if an alternative source of finance was obtained. In addition,
securing Venture Capitalist investment is often a difficult and time consuming

The Housing Affordability Of Australia Growing Rapidly And...
How and why is the housing in Australia growing rapidly and how effective are the government s
policies to control it?
Name: JianYi Wang(keith)
Teacher:Marcia Minh
Term:5B EFS 12/2014
Introduction
Recently, The Australian housing market has been growing rapidly which reflects the housing
affordability crisis as the housing price rises much quickly than household incomes. There are two
key observations of current Australian housing market from Yates, firstly today s housing
affordability problem is mainly a structural problem and intensified by cyclical pressures. It began
40 years ago when inflation switched focus on housing, besides, there are more renters than
purchasers under today s housing stress situation, and the housing ... Show more content on

This suggests that there should be a change in Australian housing policies to focus on taxes, land
supply and land use planning policy.
Definition
Housing affordability problems commonly emerge when housing cost increases faster than
household incomes (Yates, 2008). For purchasers, the houseprice mainly depends on the house
price and the interest rate. In the Australian housing market, increases in the house price and
interest rate indicated the reasons why housing affordability problems occurred over the past few
years.
Between 1960 and 2006 real house prices increased at an average of 2.7 percent annually, ahead of
a 1.9 percent per annum growth in per household real incomes (Yates, 2008). Therefore, over the
past half century, there has been an underlying structural affordability problem in Australia due to
house price and household income.
Housing demand includes household growth, real incomes, real wealth, tax concessions to both
owner occupied and rental housing, concessions to first homebuyers, returns on alternative
investments, cost and availability of finance for housing and the institutional structure affecting
housing finance provision (Yates, 2008). The growth in the number of households and in real
income results in the increased pressure on housing demand.
The reasons for housing demand increasing
From the view of demand, after 2000, the decreasing interest rate and the availability of

Essay about Clancy of the Overflow
Clancy of the Overflow Analysis
Bush poetry gives people a unique and interesting prospective into the people who made this
country the way it is today and the history behind it. Clancy of the Overflow is a well known
bush poem by poet AB Banjo Paterson. Clancy of the overflow is about a person from the city who
met a drover/ shearer named Clancy. After meeting him he becomes jealous of Clancy s lifestyle
which is better than his city life. In this poem Banjo uses a variety of poetic devices to get his
message across like the use of suggestive language, descriptive language and imagery. Banjo uses
suggestive language to make the reader realise that country life is much better than city life where it

Banjo does this to persuade the reader in believing that the country lifestyle which is portrayed
as free, clean and laid back is better than the city lifestyle which is portrayed as dirty, hot and
boring. Banjo also makes the reader believe that the attractiveness of living off the land and
idealizing the country life as a drover making the quality of life in the country seems greater
than in the city. Banjo uses imagery and the first person point of view to help the reader imagine
what it would be like to be a drover. The person living in the city imagines what Clancy the
drover is doing and feeling while he is stuck in a hot office all day. As the stock are slowly
stringing, Clancy rides behind them singing and also He sees the vision splendid of the sunlit
plains extended and at night the wondrous glory of the everlasting stars. The city living character
is conveying what Clancy the drover is doing and how peaceful it would be if he could do the
same. He also says And I somehow fancy that I d like to change with Clancy. This suggests that
the city living character is somewhat jealous of Clancy, his job and his lifestyle. The city living
character furthermore explains the city life as Of the tramways and the buses making hurry down
the street, and the language uninviting of the gutter children fighting . This suggests that the he
doesn t like his life in the city and considers it as busy and also

Stereotypes In Disney s Film Brave
Disney s famous feminist film, Brave, takes place in the Highlands of Scotland in the tenth century.
Long before authors such as Alexander MacDonald and Mary Macpherson could write their famous
poems, long before the Highland diaspora. Oftentimes, marginalized groups are pinned against one
another by the group(s) in control. Scottish tourism agencies, Visit Scotlandspecifically, were
excited for the release of Brave and created a Discover Scotland campaign that was inspired by
the film to draw tourists (Carrell). Brave seems to play into the stereotypes about Scottish people,
from the red hair, to the huge manly man, even the bears that are key to the film, have a rooted
history in Scottish folklore. In turn, the Disney film, Brave, the main character, Merida, does break

The allowance for stereotypes to be so common in Brave plays into the continued racist narrative
that affects Scottish people to this day. A viewer should be critical of the film even if it breaks
away from the patriarchal hold that has controlled Disney films for nearly a century.
To illustrate that Merida is different from any princess, the film opens with her shooting arrows
and riding a horse the way a man of the time might. Disney and Pixar did work together on this
film that at first held quite the unique premise, Merida, instead of allowing suitors to compete for
her hand in marriage, would fight for her own hand in marriage. A story that would be historically
inaccurate, but be unique and create a strong image for not only Scottish women, but women as a
whole. Rather, Disney dropped this plot line in the duration of the film to incorporate the folk
story of the Bear and the Arrow, into a mother/daughter plotline. Merida is ahead of her time as she
is a great example of Virginia Woolf s concept of the androgynous mind. The concept of the

Banishment Censorship of Twains Huckleberry Finn Essay
Banishment Censorship of Twains Huckleberry Finn Banishment?
The novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, by Mark Twain, has received much criticism
through the years. Yet Ernest Hemingway, among other great American writers, considers this work
a great American classic. This novel addresses many social issues in the South before the Civil War,
causing some critics to find it racist or degrading to the African American culture. For this reason,
these critics often attempt to ban Huckleberry Finn, or at least censor it, taking it out of the
teaching curriculum for junior high and high school students. Analyzing Twain s major themes his
satire of racism, the cruelty of the dehumanization of Jim and the ignorance and inhumanity ... Show

At times the reader can miss the message and take the vulgar and demeaning passage offensively,
explaining the desire of some people to keep it away from their children. This action may have some
benefit for some younger students, but that should not give the allowance to completely ban the
book. In the eleventh grade, students receive the requirement to read Huckleberry Finn. By this
time, they have matured enough to handle the mature nature of this book and have the ability to
read it objectively. Also, in high school, teachers focus more on theme and interpretation of writing
instead of focusing on just the plot. This allows the teachers to explain the satire in Twain s writing,
and helps the students understand the meaning of the vulgarity in the characters.
In Twain s novel, Miss Watson, Huck Finn s caretaker, owns Jim. She discovers that selling Jim
could put $800 in her pocket, making her think of Jim merely as property. Booker T. Washington
when defending Huckleberry Finn in the North American Review,
Before one gets through with the book, one cannot fail to observe that in some way or other the
author, without making any comment and without going out of his way, has somehow succeeded
in making his readers feel a genuine respect for Jim , in spite of the ignorance he displays. I cannot

The Immortal Life Of Henrietta Lacks Summary
Objectivity is an important factor in the world of journalism. Some journalist falls short of
objectivity while others seem may seem to contain too much of it, abandoning the artistry of
persuasion. Today we live in a world where our own president claims the mainstream news outlets

Whether this is ethically correct is also something to ask ourselves. JournalistHoward A. Myrick,

In the case Tardif v. Wiebe, Tardif, a bouncer, was liable for physically assaulting a patron of a
bar. But what is interesting is that the Hotel was vicariously liable for Tardifs excessive and
unjustified force . This applies to this case because Dale acted with excessive and unjustifiable
force on Bob. In Tardif v. Weibe, the courts ruled the fact that the business instructed employees
not to use force does not operate as a defense. So, even though Wal Marts training video that
clearly states that no chokeholds are to be used on any suspected shoplifter, Wal Mart can not
use this as a defense. Investing in training one s staff could have prevented this. c) Dale could
claim that he was acting in reasonable manner according to section 494 (1) of the criminal code.
That he reasonably believed Bob had committed the criminal offense of stealing and had to
forcibly restrain the said thief because police would not make it to the scene on time. If you
refer to R. v. Chen, Chen claimed he had to forcibly restrain the thief because the police were too
busy to respond promptly to complaints of shoplifting. Dale could say Bob was resisting even
after Dale showed his badge and that restraining him was his only option to prevent the theft. The

There are several factors which influence adequate service. These elements are perceived service
alternatives, situational factors, and predicted service. Perceived service alternatives are defined as
other providers from whom the customer can obtain service (Zeithaml et. al., 2013, p.59). If
customers have several service providers to select from, or if they can provide the service
themselves, then their levels of adequate service are greater than those who believe it is not
possible to get superior service in another place (p.59). Situational factors may be divided into two
categories; uncontrollable situational factors and personal situational factors. Uncontrollable
situational factors are service performance conditions that are beyond the service provider. For
example, forces of nature such as a tornado or hurricane may affect a service provider in certain
geographic areas. Customers may be more willing to accept a delay in service due to the effects if
the natural disaster. Situational factors often lower the level of adequate service, widening the
zone of tolerance (Zeithaml et. al., 2013, p.61). Personal situational factors are often short term
factors which make customers aware of the need for services. Emergency situations, such as a flat
tire may in turn raise the level of adequate service expectations, since the customer is looking for a
prompt solution

  • 2. The Tragic Hero Of King Lear One loss builds on another, but moreover, his greatest loss, and what distinguishes this tragedy from all others, is his chance of redemption. Unlike other tragedies, there is no salvation for the tragic hero or any sign of optimism in the conclusion. This bleak portrayal of King Lear, through his losses, makes him the ultimate tragic hero, and the play an ultimate tragedy. In every tragedy, of course, there is a tragic hero. A person who has good intentions, but leads the story to ruin through a fatal, and uncontrollable, flaw. The plot of the book centers around the consequences of King Lear s flaw. Throughout the play, King Lear loses his land, his honor, his fathership, his family and his companions. What makes this tragic ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lear also puts Kent into exile because of his defense of Cordelia. By the end of the act, he has removed most of the genuine influences in his court, and replaced them with insincere flatterers. This starts the tragedy, and reveals Lear s tragic flaw: his narcissism. An interesting way to approach Lear s character is by examining his relationship to his daughters. There are no mother figures in the entirety of the play, and no women aside from the king s daughters. When Lear divides his kingdom, he effectively turns the tables on his relationship with his daughters. Lear s lost land and authority now transfers to his two daughters, Goneril and Regan, and they deceitfully use this power against him. Ironically, Lear also falls in status, to a level inferior to that of his own children. Goneril no longer loves him beyond all manner and Regan no longer is an enemy to all other joys as they have professed in the beginning (I.i. 61, 73). Instead, Goneril reprimands his father for the way his servants and knights have infected her home (I.iv.237). Regan follows suit, and insist that The old man and his people/ Cannot be well bestowed (II.iv.258). His daughters no longer respect him as their father figure, treating him as a household pest in the very best of situations. This is the beginning of Lear s other kind of loss: a loss of identity. He has reverted into a more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Rank Of Eagle Scout Essay Achievement is a very important thing for many reasons. Our achievements are what define us and give us purpose. Achievement helps determine just how far we are willing to go to achieve goals and to make ourselves successful. I have worked for many achievements, in my lifetime, and I have many things that I am proud of. However, out of all of my achievements, I would say that my greatest achievement, was earning the rank of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America. The rank of Eagle Scout is not something that is easily achieved. Many people have struggled to obtain the rank and have failed. However, many of America s most influential figures have won the rank of Eagle Scout. Neil Armstrong, Hank Aaron, and Rick Perry are just a few well known figures who have obtained the rank of Eagle Scout. To add the rank s prestige and importance, those who do receive the rank make up a very small portion of the Boy Scouts who join the program. When I was seven years old, I remember seeing boys from the school s Cub Scouts program walking through the hallway. Dawned in dark blue uniforms, with orange neckties, and many colorful badges, these scouts stunned me by the unity and patriotic spirit that they showed. That evening, I went home from school and ran to the kitchen table where my father was sitting. I explained to him that I wanted to join scouting. He smiled at me and quickly took me to the local Boy Scouts headquarters, where I was signed up for a pack as it was called. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Wells Barnett (1862 1931), author Kristina Gupta stated, wells Barnett published scornful stories. These articles discussed the lynching s and injustice acts that took place in Memphis (National Women s History Museum). Ida B. Wells was one o the most influential people in journalism history. Being a woman of color herself she knew firsthand the struggles African Americans had to endure daily. For instance, in the article Ida B. Wells Barnett (1862 1931), author Kristina Gupta spoke of a time a worker on the Chesapeake Ohio Railroads removed Wells Barnett from the coach section. She was then forced to ride in the colored car. Gupta also mentions a time where Ida B. Wells three friends were lynched when she went out of town(National Women s History Museum). The Palace at Knossos served as a landmark with mythological implications as it was said to be the home of King Minos and also gave rise to the important myth of Theseus. The maze like system of the palace was used to tell the story of Theseus who slew the Minotaur while being hunted by the creature in the Palace s labyrinth. The Palace was also used for storing goods like wine, grain, oil, and honey which were kept in large jars in the magazine rooms. Furthermore, the palace complex served as a government building as it had administrative and workrooms on the north and south of the east west corridor. Furthermore, their home city state was constructed upon a large mountain, aiding the defensive nature of the civilization. Also, their art often depicts forms of warfare, The Warrior Vase and the lion hunt dagger for instance. On the other hand, the Minoans had very open architecture, especially the Palace at Knossos. Rhetorical Devices In A More Perfect Union By Barack Obama In the 2008 United States presidential election between Barack Obama vs John McCain, Obama s pastor mentioned several controversial and offensive remarks. These statements brought negative publicity for Obama because of his connection towards Reverend Jeremiah Wright, he was Obama s aforementioned pastor. With his following severely decreasing because of this, Obama had to find a way to regain his supporters by writing the powerful speech, A More Perfect Union in which he uses a variety of rhetorical devices such as parallelism, a paradox, hyperbole, and allusions to the past history of the United States. There is a vast difference of cultures in American society and schools and Obama s goals with using parallelism was to touch the hearts of every race with how the public schooling system is failing these children. We want to talk about the crumbling schools that are stealing the future of black children, and white children, and Asian children, and Hispanic children, and Native American children. He not only acknowledges the races of these children but how poor the school system is. The use of parallelism in this helps create a stronger argument because he shows he s not oblivious to the variety of cultures in America which feeds into the belief that America is home of the free and accepts anyone regardless of race, gender, and religious beliefs. Not only does he use parallelism, he also uses a hyperbole by exaggerating the fact that students futures are being stolen from them with poor education. This is a hyperbole because the public schooling system isn t actually stealing the futures of these children, but he uses this rhetorical strategy to amplify the emotion and relevance of the issues with the public school system. These rhetorical strategies are effective because of the reaction he can get from the audience. He reminds society of the issues in every day American life, and what he d wish to do to fix these issues. He wishes to share the same common beliefs and desires of the common man by focusing on the issues the common man faces day to day. Parallelism and hyperboles are strong strategies to use because of the realization and emotions it gives the audience. • 11. Camera Lucid Reflections Of Photography What the Photograph reproduces to infinity has occurred only once: the Photograph mechanically repeats what could never be repeated existentially, Roland Barthes stated in his book Camera Lucida: Reflections of Photography. Photography is the key to capturing a moment in time that will not reoccur again. You can try, but it will not be that exact moment you once saw before. A camera is a very powerful tool. It allows the artist to use it to display and present their message they are trying to get across to their audience and artistic view. A photograph will keep time frozen and allow us the audience to re experience whenever we want to. The reason I mention stopping time is because in the image named Carmen photographed by Richard Avedon he did just that. This photograph is of a woman jumping over a puddle. Richard Avedon stopped time and created this fashion and street image all in one, quite beautiful may I add. Many people can try to recreate this image but never will they get the exact leap. From photographing identification cards for the merchant marines, making it all the way into the fashion world, the iconic American photographer, Richard Avedon. These people never ask why is there so much evil in the world in fear of testing their faith to God. Moral and natural evil are kinds of evil that we see in the world but have no explanation as to why God would allow these to happen. J.L. Mackie claims that any explanation for how evilcan exist with the onmimax Godhas many faults and because of this the omnimax is only fictional. If he cannot make something happened without doing something else, he is not all powerful. • 14. Analysis Of Chekhov s The Brothers Karamazov Chekhov s use of allusion in Misery also stands in stark contrast to the works of other Russian literary giants such as Dostoevsky and Tolstoy, whose works often featured deep themes revolving around the aforementioned Christian thought. While a deep discussion on these themes is out of the scope of this paper, perhaps one of the most obvious and contrasting examples can be found in Dostoevsky s The Brothers Karamazov, which was published around 6 years before Chekhov wrote Misery . Towards the end of the novel, Father Zosima, a figure who acts as a mouthpiece for Dostoevsky s own thoughts on religion, indirectly responds to the arguments of Ivan Karamazov, who rejects God because of the existence of suffering innocents and other... That is why I made haste to flee to Tarshish; for I knew that you are a gracious God and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love, and relenting from disaster (Jonah 4:2). Jonah refuses to simply accept God s message, and instead challenges God to explain why he even had to go through his journey in the first place. When God responds, the Book of Jonah simply ends, and we never hear from Jonah again. The final image of Jonah is of him sitting under a wilting plant, fuming and wishing for an end to his life. Thus Jonah himself is in fact one of the more miserable figures of the Bible. It is only appropriate that Chekhov chose such an unorthodox figure, rather than someone like Job, to connect to the misery of his protagonist. Jonah s questioning of God even when facing his literal presence is also appropriate given Chekhov s own questioning of faith. Jonah, in a Chekhovian fashion, focuses on the realities of what he had to go through, rather than being humbled and indulging in Job s deep, yet clear cut answers and happy ending. The allusion to Jonah in Misery serves only to introduce a hint of Christian metaphysics into the story, providing Chekhov with an opportunity to deconstruct its influence in society and in the works of his ... • 17. Cancer In The Elderly Essay 4 Ways to Stave Off Colorectal Cancer in the Elderly Colorectal cancer is one of the most common types of cancer affecting the elderly. Thankfully, there are a number of actions seniors can take to prevent this disease. By maintaining a healthy lifestyle and getting regular screening tests, seniors have a better chance of preventing colorectal or colon cancer. 1. Adhere to Dietary Guidelines One of the best ways to prevent colorectal cancer is to follow a healthy diet. Elderly people at risk for cancer should limit their intake of red meat and processed meats, which means less bacon, bologna, hamburgers, or steak. This might be a tall order for some meat aficionados, but it s believed that carcinogens may form when red meat is cooked at high temperatures. Red meat also contains iron, which can damage DNA. For seniors who eat red meat daily, cutting back to several times a week is a must. After cutting down on red meat consumption, it s important to replace unhealthy foods with nutritious alternatives. Beans are a good substitute for meat, and fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a preventative diet. People who primarily eat plant based foods are less likely to develop colon cancer. 2. Why Is Freedom Of Information Act 1982 Important IMPORTANCE OF THE INFORMATION COMMISSIONER TO THE EFFECTIVE FUNCTIONING OF THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION LEGISLATION Introduction The freedom of information legislation Act of 1982 provides individuals and institutions with the right to access documents from the Australian Government ministers and agencies. The documents referred to include any electronically stored information, maps, drawings, photographs, written papers or any material with writings, signs or symbols on them. It also includes sounds and images that can be produced. According to the Senate Committee set up in 1979, the introduction of the Freedom of Information Act of 1982 was an important law for several functions. It was aimed at enabling individuals to access their personal information held by the government and confirm the accuracy of such information. Individuals also have the opportunity to correct information held about them. • 19. The Cuban National Hero Jose Marti, A Precursor Of Latin... Within this essay I am going to compare and contrast two rather different nationalist ideas that prevailed in Latin America during the nineteenth century. My concentration in this comparison is on how ethnicity and race are illustrated. The first nationalist thinker whose ideas I intent to discuss is the Cuban national hero JosГ© MartГ, a precursor of Latin American modernism. I will contrast MartГ s ideas and writings with the Peruvian journalist and political philosopher JosГ© Carlos MariГЎtegui, the representative and advocator of twentieth century Latin American Marxist ideas. There are some similarities between the offered social solutions between these authors: mainly their rejection of imported models of society and politics. However, within this essay I am arguing that the humanistic points of view between them have little in common. Whereas MartГ promotes acceptance of all people and all races, and considers all people equal to each other, MariГЎtegui, despite claiming to be racially indifferent and accepting, in fact reveals racist and discriminating arguments that undermine his claimed acceptance and embracement of the different races of America. To support my argument, I will be offering relevant examples from both authors most famous publications, MartГ s Nuestra AmГ©rica and Mi Raza , and MariГЎtegui s Siete ensayos de interpretaciГіn sobre la realidad peruana , and El problema de las razas en AmГ©rica Latina . Rituals and rules come into play strongly in both stories. In comparing The Lottery (Jackson, pg 163 170) and The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) I find that both stories focus strongly on their annual rituals of sacrifice with a scapegoat. The Lottery (Jackson, pg 163 170) and The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) have a ceremony, a formal event that brings the town or district together while having no real significance. The main difference between the rituals in The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) and The Lottery (Jackson, pg 163 170) is the event that actually takes place when the person is decided upon. In The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) the tributes are made to fight to the death, with the possibility of living. In The Lottery the person is stoned to death, having no chance of living through it. Both stories deal with a scapegoat ritual. A scapegoat is one that bears the blame for others. (Merriam Webster, definition 2) In The Hunger Games (Collins, 2008) sixteen year old Katniss Everdeen is the scapegoat after she volunteers to take the place of her younger sister Primrose Everdeen. In The Lottery Tessie Hutchinson is the scapegoat when she draws the paper with the black dot on it. The characters from the stories are being faced with death for something that they did not do, but rather their town or district did, or thinks is necessary. A ceremony is a formal act or event that is a part of a social or religious occasion. James Coleman s Social Capital in the Creation of Human Capital examines the many benefits of social capital in a society. The High School and Beyond sample shows that students who have two parents, one sibling, and a mother who expects college education have the lowest percentage of dropping out of school at 8.1%. On the other hand, students who have one parent, four siblings, and no college expectation have a whopping 30.6% of dropping out. This is caused by the absence of the single parent as he or she is most likely working. In addition, having more siblings means that the parent s attention is split and each child receive less consideration. Therefore, it comes as no surprise that the second category has a higher dropout rate because they have less social capital. Alejandro Portes discuss the controversy surrounding the actual meaning and effects of social capital. Confusion arises due its applications to manifold topics as well as its uses on different group of people. He provided the concept by Pierre Bourdieu and James Coleman which centered on the benefits of social capital on an individual or a small group. The Pros And Cons Of Racial Discrimination As an international student, I was given a great opportunity to pursue a wide range of academic studies and to experience the world diversity that enriches the promotion of a cultural exchange amongst students from many different parts of the world. Interactions with different races on a personal level has allowed me to gain a better understanding about them in person, their values, and the world; however, until I left home and went abroad as an international student, I, too, was one of few people who had only seen them in person from a long distance or through social media. As much as the issue of racial discrimination has been extreme and people s ignorance of this issue has grown in many countries, I had once denied to accept the difference and created bias in my personal view and the way I perceived different races. People tend to acquire various knowledge through individual perception formed simply by seeing what is currently lain in front of us, as I did. Barack Obama, while campaigning for the presidential nomination at the National Constitution Center Union in Philadelphia in 2008, delivered his speech about controversial issues of race that still exist in the history of America (Rai, 646). The speech titled A More Perfect Union conveys numerous messages regarding Obama s concerning beliefs of racism. Barack Obama, himself, despite serving as the 44th President of the United States, had gone through the long and hurtful journey of difficulties in the presence of racial discrimination having to face the prejudice against the colored skin and a different social and cultural background. Being colored, preconceptions about him was inevitable even during his campaign, but his oratory that openly addressed the race which is the sensitive topic that is rarely discussed or spoken in public, captured great attention allowing him to successfully build his image as an intelligent and patriotic candidate. A positivism approach involves accepting knowledge of things that have been verified by the scientific method of formation and testing (Pool, 1999, Pg. 91). Positivists focus on the falsification of things and insistence on their verification. Scientist, Karl Popper, brought new ideals to this approach by making light on the fact it is not possible to prove something true, but it can ultimately be proven true by never being proved false which can provide you with long term approximations for knowledge. • 29. Human Public Toilets For World Toilet Day Essay On the contrary to public knowledge, November 19th is a United Nations (UN) observance for World Toilet Day. Although it is unclear as to who invented the first latrine, for Homo sapiens, public toilets are one of the major markers for sophistication as a species. With eradicating unrestricted urination and defecation behaviors, this helps humans to keep cities clean and overall reduces the risk of disease. With this knowledge at hand, one could infer that other mammals have adapted this same behavior of sharing toilet spaces. In fact, rather than excreting randomly, many mammals have specific sites assigned for this activity. These sites are assigned to specific locations that are away from where the animals reside to sleep and feed. However, where Homo sapiens differ from other mammals, is that human public toilets are designed primarily for sanitation purposes. As described by the United Nations, World Toilet Day, on 19 November, is about taking action to reach the 2.4 billion people living without a toilet, (UN 2016). The United Nations then further express how sanitation is a global development priority, and how sanitation, or lack of, can impact the livelihood of people (UN 2016). In contrast, other mammal communal latrines serve a more unique purpose than just health. Not to neglect sanitation as being an important factor in the overall survival of a group, but other mammals have devised more diverse ways to use their excreta. It can augment its expenses if you could turn interest expense to savings. Looking for a means or way to settle it early than its due date to avoid interest expense and penalties is much better. Scouting for banks who could give me lower interest rates, easy terms and requirements that could buy out my existing loans with higher interest rates is the best way to save. I own land that cost P500,000 but today is worth at least P2 million. I will show it at P2 million in my company s statement of financial position, and that will increase my company s total assets and owner s equity by P1.5 million. The sulfur was a perfect home for Maggy and Nesa because it would satisfy the octet rule, the ultimate goal of every atom(with a few exceptions). They remembered learning about the lewis dot diagram in biology class which showed how the process was possible. From that class they also learned that magnesium usually has an ionic bond with a non metal as well[3,4,7,9]. So, when it came time to interact with he sulfur atom, the interior electrons kicked out Maggy and Nesa. With the twins gone, the two atoms bonded due to their charges being opposite[10]. • 38. The Great Recession Essay George Santayana, a Spanish poet and philosopher said, Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it. This quote applies to the Great Depression of 1929 and the Great Recession of 2008. There are many similarities between the two, like the causes, the actual events, and the aftermaths. Several factors led to the Great Depression, which were the following: overproduction by business and agriculture, unequal distribution of wealth, Americans buying less, and finally, the stock market crash of 1929. The Great Recession also had similar factors leading to it, like the housing bubble burst and less consumer spending. If the stock prices kept rising, this system would work well, but if the prices fell, people could not pay the loan back. Near the end of the 1929 year, prices were too high, so people wanted to sell their stocks. They thought the prices would lower soon. Stock prices did go lower and people were not buying. They all wanted to sell their stocks. Prices went even lower on October 29, where 16 million stocks were sold. This caused the collapse of the market. Similarly, the Great Recession was due to consumer spending cutbacks and a drop in demand for the establishment of new housing. In the two decades previous to 2008, the American growth rate was very high. Their household needs also became very high, which made demand increase. Spending was at a high. However personal income was decreased. The consumers then had to borrow money from the banks. This gave the consumers debt. So, when the house prices rose, banks stopped loaning money to people and the people decreased their spending. This happened because the people were not able to pay the banks back. People also cut back on buying or making new houses, so household demand dropped. Many say that this decrease caused the Great Recession. • 39. Analysis Of I Hear America Singing If we were all one of the same and diversity was unheard of, would we then have equality? Most of the time, America s issues lie in ignorance. While we are associated with equality and freedom there is no way around the question, Are we actually equal? For all that it is true, none can deny there is still room for improvement. Chew on this, it was only fifty three years ago when segregation was made illegal in all states and two years ago when the LGBTQ community allowed the right to marriage. Let us face it, we are still not free from the chains of racial bigotry and injustices. While Walt Whitmans I hear America singing exhibits the diversity and unity Americans are notoriously known for, Allen Ginsbergand Alice Walker reveal the truths about the ignorance power brings among the diverse culture. In Walt Whitman s I Hear America Singing, Whitman instills a sense of unity and diversity in the reader by simultaneously giving the characters different roles and the ability to sing in unison. Through this poem we are able to see Whitman s ideal view of America. For instance, his goal in the first line was to implant this nationalism when he says, I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear (Whitman/ 1). The phrase varied carols is used to show the differences among the townspeople but despite these differences they have a common interest in working together. He also uses song to unify the racially unidentified people. This is by no mistake, although pronouns ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The last 20 years, however, there has been a dramatic shift in this ideal among the international community. The early 1990 s ushered in numerous research studies that suggested a negative correlation between the use of corporal punishmentand emotional, mental, and developmental issues in children (Durrant Ensom, 2012). Studies have also indicated that the higher number of instances of violence perpetrated on children in the form of corporal punishment, the higher the levels of adult violence. This may have been true with automobiles made several years ago, but the cars and trucks manufactured today are quality automobiles. King s (n.d.) statement demonstrates the major internal impact bystanders can have on others. As a matter of fact, most people do not think about the possible long term effects of not standing up for someone or something. Although it may not seem like a big deal to one person, it could be life changing to another. Many just consider a bystander to be someone who is present at an incident and doesn t take action, but there is actually much more to it. The term bystander can be defined as someone who is present during corruption, does not speak up, and seems not to care about others. By definition, a bystander must be present during an act of corruption, hence the word. If they are not present, they do not have the choice to be a bystander or not since they have no idea what happened. In the novel, Heart of Darkness, Marlow can definitely be considered a bystander, especially since he was present during the corruption involving the Congo people. There are two key observations of current Australian housing market from Yates, firstly today s housing affordability problem is mainly a structural problem and intensified by cyclical pressures. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This suggests that there should be a change in Australian housing policies to focus on taxes, land supply and land use planning policy. Definition Housing affordability problems commonly emerge when housing cost increases faster than household incomes (Yates, 2008). For purchasers, the houseprice mainly depends on the house price and the interest rate. In the Australian housing market, increases in the house price and interest rate indicated the reasons why housing affordability problems occurred over the past few years. Between 1960 and 2006 real house prices increased at an average of 2.7 percent annually, ahead of a 1.9 percent per annum growth in per household real incomes (Yates, 2008). Therefore, over the past half century, there has been an underlying structural affordability problem in Australia due to house price and household income. Housing demand includes household growth, real incomes, real wealth, tax concessions to both owner occupied and rental housing, concessions to first homebuyers, returns on alternative investments, cost and availability of finance for housing and the institutional structure affecting housing finance provision (Yates, 2008). The growth in the number of households and in real income results in the increased pressure on housing demand.
