This talk addresses a significant gap in researcher training. The ‘craft’ of the research process encompasses the skills and knowledge beyond discipline specificity and despite being an essential aspect of research success is not addressed in a systematic and strategic way across the sector. Often the responsibility for this type of training falls on the shoulders of librarians - but who is responsible for training the trainers?
Without an agreed curriculum of what skills and knowledge should be included in this type of researcher training, it is very difficult to develop training programs. And if libraries are at least partly responsible for providing this training, it is difficult to identify the skills to recruit for in our staff.
The number of advertised library positions directly associated with scholarly communication has exponentially increased in the US and UK over the past decade. However, in Australia, until very recently many of these skills were not acknowledged as an essential part of librarianship by ALIA. A recent study of Australasian librarians indicated that scholarly communication skills are primarily obtained through self-directed learning. The oversubscription to the recent OA101 course from OA Australasia speaks to the huge need.
We need to strategically identify what should be teaching our emerging researchers ‘beyond their discipline’. In doing so we can also identify the skills and knowledge our library community should possess to ensure we are able to meet these needs and future-proof the profession.
This issue reaches beyond the library, and is an opportunity to engage with colleagues in the research office and bind the cords of community groups such as AIMOS, ANZORN and OA Australasia. We cannot enable a modern curriculum until we identify one, and this poses an opportunity for libraries to lead our sector towards a more strategic coherent and successful future.

Established career paths for library staff are being disrupted, presenting both challenges and new opportunities. If you’re a new professional, what skills will you need to build a career and what are the possible career opportunities? If you’re a manager, what skills will you need in your staff, and how can these be developed? This session will outline the current state of skills development and training in scholarly communications support within university libraries, and the work being done to coordinate activity across the community by universities a range of professional associations including UKSG, Jisc, SCONUL, RLUK, UKCoRR, ARMA, Vitae, Cilip and the British Library. It will be an interactive workshop, and attendees will be encouraged to reflect on progress to date and help shape future activities

The scholarly communications profession is constantly changing, and a wide range of skills are required in the advertised job descriptions. In an effort to investigate what kind of skills future information professionals need, during the period March 2015 to September 2017 job postings advertising positions relating to Open Access were collected. The total number of the collected job postings was 72.
The collection was done manually throughout this whole period from job advertising sites, such as Jobs.ac.uk, CILIP Lisjobnet and the Times of Higher Education. In addition, the author is subscribing to open listserves, such as the Jisc-Repositories, OAGoodPractice and a closed one, the UKCoRR-Discussion list, and managed to collect job descriptions from those list servers as well.
The aim of this work is to identify the most important skills required in the jobs advertised in our field, educate the new comers in the field and identify how our profession is evolving.
This second report updates proposes ten innovations that are already in currency but have not yet had a profound influence on education. You can see a summary of each innovation at the menu on the right. Please contribute with comments on the report and the innovations. OPEN uNIVERSITY
MOOCs for Professional Development: Transformative Learning Environments and ...SJSU School of Information
Dr. Michael Stephens participated on a panel discussing the use of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) for professional development at the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) 80th General Conference and Assembly, held in Lyon, France from Aug. 16, 2014 to Aug. 22, 2014. Stephens presented some of his findings from his ongoing research with The Hyperlinked Library MOOC. “The panel in France was also about the broader idea that large scale learning is something that information professionals should be using, and about how it supports professional development,” said Stephens. An assistant professor at the San Jose State University School of Information, Stephens teaches courses in the iSchool's exclusively online Master of Library and Information Science degree program.
PC3: Personalised Curriculum Creation through Coaching is a JISC-funded project at Leeds Metropolitan University. The project launch is on September 15th 2008 and this presentation gives a basic introduction to the project and the way it uses coaching.
Designing for Openness: Values Based Organisations Place in the Digital Lands...Ronald Macintyre
Digitisation, open and online, digital innovation, digital participation, all press on and ask questions of values based organisations. Based on work with a range of Third Sector partners over a number of years this paper explores how values based organisation understand and find their place in messy landscape. Suggesting it is not always appropriate for values based organisations to adopt practices from private sector digital disruptors, as these start with different assumptions and values, but instead develop their own approaches based on their organisational values and the needs of the people they support. Using work with a range of partners in different sector, from Health and Social Care to Trade Unions the paper looks at how values based organisations have approached this tension. Sharing what has been learnt from working in partnership, and how this has informed a mutual understanding of how to design and produce digital artefacts and critically the social and situated nature of how they are used.

The empire's roots lie in the city of Rome, founded, according to legend, by Romulus in 753 BCE. Over centuries, Rome evolved from a small settlement to a formidable republic, characterized by a complex political system with elected officials and checks on power. However, internal strife, class conflicts, and military ambitions paved the way for the end of the Republic. Julius Caesar’s dictatorship and subsequent assassination in 44 BCE created a power vacuum, leading to a civil war. Octavian, later Augustus, emerged victorious, heralding the Roman Empire’s birth.
Under Augustus, the empire experienced the Pax Romana, a 200-year period of relative peace and stability. Augustus reformed the military, established efficient administrative systems, and initiated grand construction projects. The empire's borders expanded, encompassing territories from Britain to Egypt and from Spain to the Euphrates. Roman legions, renowned for their discipline and engineering prowess, secured and maintained these vast territories, building roads, fortifications, and cities that facilitated control and integration.
The Roman Empire’s society was hierarchical, with a rigid class system. At the top were the patricians, wealthy elites who held significant political power. Below them were the plebeians, free citizens with limited political influence, and the vast numbers of slaves who formed the backbone of the economy. The family unit was central, governed by the paterfamilias, the male head who held absolute authority.
Culturally, the Romans were eclectic, absorbing and adapting elements from the civilizations they encountered, particularly the Greeks. Roman art, literature, and philosophy reflected this synthesis, creating a rich cultural tapestry. Latin, the Roman language, became the lingua franca of the Western world, influencing numerous modern languages.
Roman architecture and engineering achievements were monumental. They perfected the arch, vault, and dome, constructing enduring structures like the Colosseum, Pantheon, and aqueducts. These engineering marvels not only showcased Roman ingenuity but also served practical purposes, from public entertainment to water supply.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle

Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
