Jin Yuan Senior High School in Shanghai has established a link with George Abbot School in Guildford. The headteachers from both schools have worked to create student exchanges between the two schools starting in 2008. Students from both schools have learned about each other's cultures through visits and the study of subjects like Mandarin and the creative arts. The aim of the partnership is to provide students a global education and cultural experiences abroad.

Students from preschool to 5th grade participated in running or walking around the field while donating canned goods. The student council then collected, boxed, and counted over 1,500 total food items donated, surpassing the goal of 1,000 items. Teachers also joined in running and walking with the students. The event promoted community service and physical activity for students.

In 2015, three economies in China participated in the OECD Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, for the first time: Beijing, a municipality, Jiangsu, a province on the eastern coast of the country, and Guangdong, a southern coastal province. Shanghai, which, like Beijing, is also a Chinese megacity of over 20 million people, has participated in PISA since 2009. These four economies alone are home to more than 233 million people – more than the entire population of Brazil, nearly three times the population of Germany and nearly four times the population of France. What do we know about the largest education system in the world? A system that is educating 260 million young people, and that employs 15 million teachers? Not very much. This paper aims to change that. It provides a broad overview of how China’s education system is organised and operates, and how reforms, both past and current, have reshaped education in China over time. The report then examines in greater detail education in the four economies within China that participated in PISA 2015. It provides the context in which China’s participation in PISA – and its results in PISA – should be interpreted.

It is one of eleven districts in and around ShanghaiThe district consists of 146 schools serving a population one million people. The total population in Shanghai is eighteen million.A school was originally built on this sight in 1904 and was known as the Hua Tong Public School, however it has been renamed and modernized in recent years.The stated aim of the school is ‘Optional Education, Overall Learning, Outstanding Development’

- 5. Mr Moloney and the headteacher of Shanghai Jin Yuan Senior High School Mrs Wang Liping have worked together to establish the link.Mrs Liping has also worked as the Office Director of Putuo Educational Bureau and Deputy General Party Branch Secretary amongst other posts
- 6. Both George Abbot School and Jinyuan have link schools all over the world, and both consider the Global Dimension as an essential part of students’ education

In the twenty first century the students and staff work extremely hard at school, but the staff are keen for students to remember that the lighter side of life is very important too, as in this picture of staff on a day out!
- 21. Students work hard, but the atmosphere is relaxed and friendly.There is a wide curriculum and many different styles of teaching.Students in this music lesson (left) were studying the song ‘Memories’ from the London show ‘Cats’
- 22. Students in the experimental English class were studying a book called ‘The Personality Potion’ in which a boy must stand up for what he thinks is right against bullies in the playground
- 23. Students were asked to discuss, to comment and to prepare to read in groups ‘in role’ as characters in the book
- 25. Students worked together, then they were asked to present their work in groups. The rest of the class voted on the best performances…
- 26. This student was applauded for his individual style and creative interpretation of the story!
