Human settlements have evolved over thousands of years from early cave dwellings to modern cities. Early humans lived in caves for protection, and around 14,000 years ago the first stone settlements appeared in the Middle East. Around 10,000 years ago, the development of agriculture allowed for more permanent dwellings and the rise of complex societies. Factors like available land, resources, climate, jobs, and culture have influenced where and how humans live. Today, settlements include rural villages and larger urban centers.
