1. Which Type Are You?
Determining your starting point can help to determine the
obstacles you’re likely to face and the strategies that will be
most effective to enhance your communication style. Keep
in mind that you may exhibit multiple communication
styles, depending on the situation or your state of mind.
Find your type:
1. Passive. Those that are passive do not freely share their
opinions, wants, or needs. This is done to avoid any
conflict, regardless of the cost. You’ll often find that
passive people frequently avoid eye contact and are
exceptionally reserved. They also tend to act in a way
that doesn't offend people.
← Characteristics of passive individuals:
• Often give in to unreasonable demands.
• Tend to mimic the opinions of others.
• Loathe providing criticism to anyone.
• Avoid standing out in any way. They avoid doing or
saying anything that might attract attention or
disapproval.
← The major problem with being passive is that you are
not in control of your life. You ultimately give much of
the control of your life over to others, their desires, their
wants.
2. Assertiveness Training 101: Get What You Want and Others Will Like It
← Because you're needs and wants aren't addressed you’re
more likely to suffer from depression and feelings of
hopelessness than those who are not passive.
← The result is feeling powerless. You might begin
withdrawing more from the world each day rather than
interacting with it.
2. Aggressive. An aggressive individual seeks to fulfill
personal wants and needs without awareness of or
interest in the wants and needs of others. In many ways,
the aggressive person is the opposite of the passive. He
wants to make the other person submit, rather than
submitting himself.
← Characteristics of aggressive individuals:
• A need to control the situation.
• Runs over people without even thinking.
• Lacks awareness their behavior is contributing to
relationship problems they are having.
← There are several advantages to aggressive behavior.
Acting aggressively can be an effective way to get
others to do what you want. Those that are dominated
tend to make fewer demands. Acting aggressively can
also assist you feeling powerful and in control over
your life.
← There are major disadvantages to being aggressive.
