Assure Method:
Analyze Learners
Learners’ General Characteristics
The instructional unit is for grade eights students with disabilities. The students range in
age from 6 to 8 years of age. There 10 boys and 7 girls Some students have severe ADHD, they
are also culturally diverse. They come from a variety of socioeconomic environments; 70% are
white, 20% African American, and 10% Latino. Generally, the students are well-behaved when
the class is organized and focus on the topics of interest.
Entry Competencies
The first graders have received prior instruction and have working knowledge in:
 The Alphabet
 The concept of what a year is
 Basic vocabulary
 Counting capabilities adequate for the first grade
 Average reading comprehension level of A (GRL)
Learning Styles
The students prefer to be engaged in the class, such as working on hands-on on projects and
small group activities. They dislike worksheets and reading from text books. If they begin to
distracted the best thing to is introduce the topic or a new activity. When they enter the class
room there is an organizer stating the days topic and activities this helps keep them on task.
Some of them do not text well on paper-and-pencil assessments and prefer to use technology.
State Objectives
1).Given a calendar, the first grade student will demonstrate the ability to pronounce all of the
months fluently in a two week span with 80% accuracy.
2).Given a list of the twelve months, the first grade student will enumerate them in the proper
order and when asked out of order in one week span with 100% accuracy.
3).Working in small groups of three to four, the first grade students will develop a complete
calendar, including correct spelling of the months in a three week span with 90% accuracy.
4). Using a provided calendar, the first grade student will demonstrate the ability to list how
many days each month has. In addition list the month according to length by the end of the year
with 75% accuracy.
5).The first grade students will develop a calendar in its entirety with 85% accuracy.
Select Methods, Media, and Materials
This lesson will begin with the use of a white board which displays the day’s objectives
and the use of a Smart Board. The Smart Board is already provided in the classroom along with
the white board, both in clear view for all of the students. The Black Board displays a list of the
months allowing the student to get a preview of what they will be learning. A video will play that
has a catchy tune the student will be drawn to which explain a calendar and the months. This will
grab their attention directly to the lesson’s objective, this is a key factor for the students with
ADHD. There will also be material brought in for an interactive project with the students
including: paper, pencil, colored pencils, and other required materials.
Utilize Media and Materials
Preview the Materials: I will look over the video containing information about the calendar and
the months of the year. Make sure that all material functions and is appropriate for the classroom.
Also, the information the students will be supplied for the students will be reviewed from the
calendar hand outs to all other supplies.
Prepare the Materials: I prepare the student group activity instructions, handouts, and videos
using the Black Board and Smart Board. I lay out the required paperwork for the classroom
activities, making sure it is working and accessible for the students use. The materials available
will be: blank calendars, a list of the months, pencils and colored pencils, and addition paper for
student use.
Prepare the Environment: The classroom will be set up for both small teamwork and overall
class participation. The desks are in groups of three to four allowing for a collaborative
community for group activity. There are papers placed on each desks assigned to an individual
students. The groups will take turn expressing their thoughts about the calendar; create a
cohesive calendar all students can agree on. During this time all student are free to ask questions
and move around to the interactive stations provided with classroom supplies.
Prepare the Learners: To prepare the students, I will write the days objectives on the Black
Board clearly for all students to see. Each student receives a handout of the days instruction
beginning with a description of the months and what the video will contain. It also tell the order
in which class will run for that days. Half way through the classes an interactive activy will
commence which will be an excellent learning tool for those students with ADHD this will test
their knowledge of the months. The video will introduce the months and allow each student to
learn while seeing an example of a completed calendar and providing a catch tune to help drive
home the information for this lesson.
Provide the Learning Experience: In the introductory phase of this unit, I present the material
using the calendar and the Black Board and Smart Board. The Black Board is centered in the
room attached to my laptop computer giving me control over the video presentation. The Black
Board is along the same wall the Smart Board faces. All work stations and desks have all of the
required materials for this lesson.
Require Learner Participation
In Class Activities
At the beginning of the lesson, to present an overview of the twelve months, each student
will has to listen to a song about the months and create an image of what they think a month
sound like to them. I will give them time to create their own than present their images to the
class. After every student has had a turn as a whole class we will decide what each month
actually means. This will enable the class to begin making connects between the months and
other images that will enable to become engaged into the class instruction.
Small Group Activities
Following the video which shows the students a more in depth explanation about the
months, the students will form teams of three to four to participate in a group activity. They will
receive a blank calendar and a list of months. Together they will organize the months in order.
After they have completed this they will pick one season to draw a picture for each of the three
months in that said season. The students may choose to reenact their drawing for the class.
Evaluate and Revise
Assessment of Learner Achievement: The following rating will be used to evaluate
students’ knowledge of the month’s unit.
1. Individual Activity (25 points)
2. Final Completed Calendar including the amount of days per month (50 points)
3. Team Project (25 points)
Evaluation of Media of Methods:The students will evaluate the instructional video and
how their images they drew after watching the video. I will ask them to rate this on a
scale of 1 to 10.
Evaluation of Overall Instruction: I will analyze the projects of the students on the unit to
assess the effectiveness of the video and group activity.

Assure method assignment

  • 1. Assure Method: Analyze Learners Learners’ General Characteristics The instructional unit is for grade eights students with disabilities. The students range in age from 6 to 8 years of age. There 10 boys and 7 girls Some students have severe ADHD, they are also culturally diverse. They come from a variety of socioeconomic environments; 70% are white, 20% African American, and 10% Latino. Generally, the students are well-behaved when the class is organized and focus on the topics of interest. Entry Competencies The first graders have received prior instruction and have working knowledge in:  The Alphabet  The concept of what a year is  Basic vocabulary  Counting capabilities adequate for the first grade  Average reading comprehension level of A (GRL) Learning Styles The students prefer to be engaged in the class, such as working on hands-on on projects and small group activities. They dislike worksheets and reading from text books. If they begin to distracted the best thing to is introduce the topic or a new activity. When they enter the class room there is an organizer stating the days topic and activities this helps keep them on task. Some of them do not text well on paper-and-pencil assessments and prefer to use technology. State Objectives 1).Given a calendar, the first grade student will demonstrate the ability to pronounce all of the months fluently in a two week span with 80% accuracy. 2).Given a list of the twelve months, the first grade student will enumerate them in the proper order and when asked out of order in one week span with 100% accuracy. 3).Working in small groups of three to four, the first grade students will develop a complete calendar, including correct spelling of the months in a three week span with 90% accuracy. 4). Using a provided calendar, the first grade student will demonstrate the ability to list how many days each month has. In addition list the month according to length by the end of the year with 75% accuracy. 5).The first grade students will develop a calendar in its entirety with 85% accuracy.
  • 2. Select Methods, Media, and Materials This lesson will begin with the use of a white board which displays the day’s objectives and the use of a Smart Board. The Smart Board is already provided in the classroom along with the white board, both in clear view for all of the students. The Black Board displays a list of the months allowing the student to get a preview of what they will be learning. A video will play that has a catchy tune the student will be drawn to which explain a calendar and the months. This will grab their attention directly to the lesson’s objective, this is a key factor for the students with ADHD. There will also be material brought in for an interactive project with the students including: paper, pencil, colored pencils, and other required materials. Utilize Media and Materials Preview the Materials: I will look over the video containing information about the calendar and the months of the year. Make sure that all material functions and is appropriate for the classroom. Also, the information the students will be supplied for the students will be reviewed from the calendar hand outs to all other supplies. Prepare the Materials: I prepare the student group activity instructions, handouts, and videos using the Black Board and Smart Board. I lay out the required paperwork for the classroom activities, making sure it is working and accessible for the students use. The materials available will be: blank calendars, a list of the months, pencils and colored pencils, and addition paper for student use. Prepare the Environment: The classroom will be set up for both small teamwork and overall class participation. The desks are in groups of three to four allowing for a collaborative
  • 3. community for group activity. There are papers placed on each desks assigned to an individual students. The groups will take turn expressing their thoughts about the calendar; create a cohesive calendar all students can agree on. During this time all student are free to ask questions and move around to the interactive stations provided with classroom supplies. Prepare the Learners: To prepare the students, I will write the days objectives on the Black Board clearly for all students to see. Each student receives a handout of the days instruction beginning with a description of the months and what the video will contain. It also tell the order in which class will run for that days. Half way through the classes an interactive activy will commence which will be an excellent learning tool for those students with ADHD this will test their knowledge of the months. The video will introduce the months and allow each student to learn while seeing an example of a completed calendar and providing a catch tune to help drive home the information for this lesson. Provide the Learning Experience: In the introductory phase of this unit, I present the material using the calendar and the Black Board and Smart Board. The Black Board is centered in the room attached to my laptop computer giving me control over the video presentation. The Black Board is along the same wall the Smart Board faces. All work stations and desks have all of the required materials for this lesson. Require Learner Participation In Class Activities At the beginning of the lesson, to present an overview of the twelve months, each student will has to listen to a song about the months and create an image of what they think a month
  • 4. sound like to them. I will give them time to create their own than present their images to the class. After every student has had a turn as a whole class we will decide what each month actually means. This will enable the class to begin making connects between the months and other images that will enable to become engaged into the class instruction. Small Group Activities Following the video which shows the students a more in depth explanation about the months, the students will form teams of three to four to participate in a group activity. They will receive a blank calendar and a list of months. Together they will organize the months in order. After they have completed this they will pick one season to draw a picture for each of the three months in that said season. The students may choose to reenact their drawing for the class. Evaluate and Revise Assessment of Learner Achievement: The following rating will be used to evaluate students’ knowledge of the month’s unit. 1. Individual Activity (25 points) 2. Final Completed Calendar including the amount of days per month (50 points) 3. Team Project (25 points) Evaluation of Media of Methods:The students will evaluate the instructional video and how their images they drew after watching the video. I will ask them to rate this on a scale of 1 to 10. Evaluation of Overall Instruction: I will analyze the projects of the students on the unit to assess the effectiveness of the video and group activity.
