Oral History Analysis
An oral history interview has a multitude of elements that differentiates it from a normal journalistic
interview. "Oral history is primary source material collected in an interview setting with a witness
to or participant in an event or a way of life and is grounded in context of time and place to give it
meaning..." (COHT Volume 1 pg.26). The purpose is preserve the information and keep for future
generations, researchers, and the community. Oral histories are made so that communities do not

When writing a paper is it essential to have primary sources and allow them to lead the paper. A
great primary source is Oral History, but two issues with using oral history is first collecting accurate
history and then interpreting the history. Oral history is when someone records the stories told by

1.Oral History has gone through a complex evolution in the professionalization of history. Green
and Troup articulate that from the 1960's on, oral history became known as "unreliable and tainted

Oral History Interview
The individual I chose to interview for my oral history project was actually the Vice Principal of
my school and his name was Mr. Clair. During our interview, he relayed to me the experiences he
went during the Civil Rights Movement. What I was told during this interview was surprisingly
different from what I was expecting, I was expecting to hear stories about how my interviewee
witnessed many people of color being abused and segregated to the extremes. However, what I
heard was a bit calmer than that and surprisingly, did not involve much violence at all. Mr. Clair
told me about how he was only a young boy, around ten years old when the civil rights movement
began to take off and in his school the main reaction he had was utter dismay. It was shocking and

This was amusing to me because the Civil Rights Movement was having a direct impact on his
life. This forced him to make the choice to either support this movement that was occurring in his
school or just go on with his life. Being the young boy he was, my interviewee didn't really have a
reaction to this decision, he did what his parents decided to do. That isn't surprising because most
children usually follow their parents, however; what made this so interesting was the fact that his
parents made the decision not to do anything about the actions going on around them. If I was put in
this same situation I would probably do the same thing my interviewee did, just stay neutral and
don't actively participate in any actions against the Civil Rights Movement. I would do this because
I am a person who tends to mind my own business unless something actually has an effect on my
life. In this situation, having colored kids leave my school isn't really something that would hinder
the quality of my education, therefor; causing me to do

Oral History Reflection
One of the things I am passionate about is communicating and learning about people and their
stories. Which is the sole reason why my major after college is going to be business marketing.
That's probably why my job is to ask people questions, edify their problems, and to see if my
company can help resolve their problems. I'm curious by nature and like to know the story
behind the person which is why the Oral History Report was my most prized paper as I got to
spend quality time with my grandfather and got to experience from his point of view throughout
history. I tend to keep my interview like a normal conversation so it does not feel like I was
interrogating him. I accomplished this goal by simply asking him questions that brought up
others event without me asking for them. The most rewarding aspect of conducting the
interviews with my grandfather, was to put my shoes into his so I could experience history first
hand. I am not that close to my paternal grandparents as we do not live under the same roof or
visit each other so doing this Oral History Report with my grandfather gave me the opportunity to
not only to spend quality time to know him better, but also to hear his view on politics as he not
only knows history but also has experienced it. I never realized that how he became the man he
was or how tough life had treated him. Doing this meeting managed me the opportunity to learn
things about him I never knew. For instance, I never knew my grandfather was a third grade
dropout or that he was drafted to the Vietnam War. I was shocked as I placed my

and imagined leaving the comfort of my home towards the battlefield. I also learned that my
grandfather dropped out of school to provide for his family, he travelled the country all alone to
land a job and to replace the income that they had before his father passed away. The other thing I
discovered compensating from this meeting was figuring out how prominent and regarded my
grandfather still is in the community. I realized just how much of his life he was not living because
of the war. I got a greater appreciation and respect not only for him, but for all veterans that fought

Oral History At Los Alamos
What kind of public history issues does an individual encounter daily at their local community's
historical society? The public history issues that I have come across in my professional experience
include topics as memory, oral histories, and the categorizing of archives. For my professional
experience hours, I am volunteering at Los Alamos' local historical society, where the organization is
currently conducting several oral histories and cataloging their archives. While conducting oral
histories on World War II andManhattan Project Veterans I have connected my experience to issues
such as memory. The connection to memory has caused me to form several questions on whether the

The idea of memory can relate to such examples photos, quotes, and how a landscape or town use
to appear can connect to the issue of oral history. The connection allows the historian to help those
that they are interviewing recall on their experiences. The connection between the two has caused
me to realize that primary accounts can be very subjective. About previous coursework, I learned
that oral histories should subjectively view these accounts as the recollection of an event by the
individual may have faded with age. The concepts of memory and oral history have been an active
issue in my experience. One instance that I have noticed when interviewing several Manhattan
Project Veterans is their recollection of dates, which revolve around certain historical events as the
Trinity Test. In one interview, a veteran informed me that he began working in Los Alamos on the
Manhattan Project in 1942 and that the Trinity Test took place in the June of 1945. The interview
provides an excellent example of how a primary source's account of an event can fade over time as
the laboratory at Los Alamos did not open until 1943, and the test at the Trinity site took place in
July of 1945. Learning from the interview, I immediately connect this to my prior coursework
bringing photos of the Los Alamos area during the 1940s to my next oral history interview.

Pros And Cons Of Oral History
Oral history has been a vital source of historical and important information since the beginning of
human interaction. Recordings and one on one interviews with someone who lived through a certain
time period or particular event can often provide a substantial amount of information and evidences
on a subject that one may be researching. Unfortunately oral history does has its flaws, and it does
not always provide the best source of information. Often information from direct interviews and
other forms of oral history can be misinterpreted and inaccurate. There are quite a few pros and
cons when using oral history as a source of evidence. These pros includes first–hand accounts of a
certain event, person, and/or time period, next access to information not available in books,
articles, or journals, and finally oral history allows for different views and opinions on a subject
matter the opportunity to be heard that otherwise wouldn't. There also are several cons when using
oral history as a source of evidence. As mention earlier information from oral history can and has
often been misinterpreted and inaccurate. Another con includes biases and ideology differences
effecting personal accounts of an event or person. The final con is the creditability of the actually
source. In the Hochschild book and the interview with Stalin's daughter, these pros and cons are
present. Having a first–hand account of a historical event or person can be extremely useful.

The use of audio records for this project is significantly important as audio records allows people
to heard the voices of those who are not heard, in this specific case, it is the voices of immigrants
that are heard. Often, there is a general belief that people come to Canada for a better life, which is
true. However, people also assume that immigrants instantly have a better life in an economic and
