Editor's Notes

  • #4 Briefly introduce the concept of labor market information and how that information is helpful to target their job search. It’s useful to know who’s hiring, where, what trends are being predicted, how to find out information in the local industries.
  • #5 Briefly discuss that 2 of the largest industries in the Tri-Cities include Advanced Manufacturing and Information/Communication Technology. The job titles on the slides are just examples and employers in this sector may have need of many different positions/workers.
  • #6 Briefly discuss that a job search requires research, assessment, and communication, among other things.
  • #7 Use the above questions to generate discussion. A possible activity is to do pair or small group discussion. Preparation could be printing up 2-3 sets of the above questions, cut up these questions into strips into whatever question grouping that you prefer. During the workshop, the clients each pick a question(s) strip and find the ‘match’ with another client. In pairs or small groups answer the questions as it applies to the group members.
  • #8 During this slide, show the tricitiesonestop.com homepage, how to access calendars, and eastbayworks.com site.
  • #9 Show one example resume and discuss basic structure (contact info, skills/qualification highlight, work experience). Show one before and after example, similar to Career Builder website listed below, and discuss accomplishment statement: Context – Action – Result. Use Accomplishment Statement handout as needed. Possible materials for this slide: http://www.careerbuilder.com/jobseeker/resumes/StellarSamples.aspx?version So, What’s Next p 32-27 Handout
  • #10 Use Handout and skip slide OR Have clients write down one accomplishment statement from their previous job. Check individually with clients during this time to ensure comprehension. add quantifiable details partner up to discuss and help each other improve statements Group discussion
  • #11 During this slide, show the tricitiesonestop.com homepage, how to access calendars, and eastbayworks.com site.
  • #12 Discuss basic interviewing preparation. Do the clients feel prepared? Use So, What’s Next? as needed.
  • #13 Use Handout (pick one practice question and have participants prepare then practice with a partner) and skip slide OR Have clients write down answers to above. (1-2 min). Then partner up to discuss. (1-2 min.)
  • #14 During this slide, show the tricitiesonestop.com homepage, how to access calendars, and eastbayworks.com site.
  • #17 This is a good opportunity to have the clients individually go through these steps in the Resource Room. Provide a time limit if needed.
  • #18 Both Adults and Dislocated Workers fare worse in the short-term. However, Adults earnings eventually register an increase over those who didn’t participate in WIA ($200-$400 more per qtr). Dislocated Workers, on the other hand, tend to wind up working in fields unrelated to training and register modest (if at all significant) gains over their counterparts who did not participate in training.
