Editor's Notes

  • #12 Particularly suited for website hosting (software service providers). It can be scalable. One user or 1 millions users. Server can handle many customers without data getting mixed up. Data protected Get the most out of their hardware. Only add servers at the layer of the data center where you need them. More users, more servers. API’s can talk to other devices like cell phones. Open interfaces. Can talk to provisioning, admin, and billing
  • #13 Integration idea Lose Edge MTAs Mail Transfer Agent Only the Webmail Server changes to OX Server. Nothing else changes _______________ This is what a typical web hosting providers webmail infrastructure looks like. Incoming Email As email enters the system it is scrubbed by Edge MTAs which run spam and antivirus software. All email that passes the Edge MTAs is then send to another set of MTAs for routing all email to the correct mail store. The mailstore holds each email until the user requests it. User Request A webmail user sends a request to view the webmail application The request is handled by a load balancer and forwarded to one of many web servers The web server then send the request onto the webmail servers again through a load balancer The webmail servers then fetch the appropriate mail from the mailstore for that user, render the UI and send the result back to the user. Admin Infrastructure Also sitting off to the side are a number of systems which may interact at some with the email system: Billing – to automatically bill for used bandwidth, # of users, add-on services, etc Provisioning – to create accounts, configure account features, and other administrative tasks Database Servers – Storing user information, storing account information, storing billing information, storing account statistics Overall this is typically a system which has been built out over time to meet the needs of the hosting company. Through expertise and trial and error these system have been hardened to suite the specific needs of the hosting company.
