Session given at the PTJUG (Portugal JUG):
Whether you're a seasoned Java developer looking to start hacking on EE6 or you just wrote your first line of Ruby yesterday, the cloud is turning out to be the perfect environment for developing applications in just about any modern language or framework. There are plenty of clouds and platform-as-a-services to choose from, but where to start? Join us for an action-packed hour of power where we'll show you how to deploy an application written in the language of your choice - Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl or Python, with the framework of your choice - EE6, CDI, Seam, Spring, Zend, Cake, Rails, Sinatra, PerlDancer or Django to the OpenShift PaaS in just minutes. And without having to rewrite your app to get it to work the way the cloud provider thinks your app should work.
Check the command-line fu as we leverage Git to onboard apps onto OpenShift Express in seconds, while also making use of the web browser do the heavy-lifting of provisioning clusters, deploying, monitoring and auto-scaling apps in OpenShift Flex.
If you want to learn how the OpenShift PaaS and investing an hour of your time can change everything you thought you knew about developing applications in the cloud, this session is for you!
n this presentation you will learn why enterprises are so excited about OpenShift, the Container Platform by Red Hat. This platform leverages open source technologies like Docker and Kubernetes, to deliver a platform ready for agile application development, while providing ops the stability they need for production deployments. In this presentation we will cover how OpenShift meets these challenges, and give you some insight in how OpenShift is working.

Build and run applications in a dockerless kubernetes worldJorge Morales
Talk at Dev Days Riga 2018:
Kubernetes has rapidly grown to support many container runtime formats. In this talk, I'm presenting all the alternatives you have to run your applications in kubernetes, and will present CRI-O which is steadily becoming a replacement to run your Docker containers on production. And since you will no longer have Docker, how will you build now your Docker containers? Buildah is a project that facilitates building Docker containers in a Dockerless world.
You have heard about containers and would like to see more than some hand waving and slideware. Well sit back and enjoy. We'll cover some basic vocabulary and tech for those who are new to the technology. From there on out, it will be all demos! Starting with just deploying a simple Docker image, we will work all the way up to a complete application and scale it on demand. You will leave a great taste of the technology Red Hat and Cisco will be bringing you to get your application development on the right track!

KubeCon CloudNativeCon Seattle 2019 Recap - General overview and also summary of some of the application deployment track (App sig, Operator Framework, Helm, Kustomize, CNAB).
OpenShift is Red Hat's Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) that lets developers quickly develop, host, and scale Docker container-based applications. OpenShift enables a uniform and standardised approach to container management across all hosting options including AWS/EC2 and other private/public cloud and on/off-premise variants. At this session, you will learn how Red Hat's enterprise clients are using OpenShift to enable their digital transformation initiatives. Examples will cover how realising a hybrid cloud strategy can simplify and reduce the risk of migrating and transitioning application workloads to containers in the cloud.

The last section of the meetup will consist of a hands-on demonstration of the most popular container orchestration technology today, Kubernetes.
Automating with operators - FossAsia Summit 2019Jorge Morales
Kubernetes scales and manages stateless applications quite easily. Stateful applications can require more work. Databases, caching systems, and file stores are harder to dynamically manage with data intact, and sometimes come with their own notion of clustering. Operators are Kubernetes agents that know how to deploy, scale, manage, backup, and even upgrade complex, stateful applications.
This talk will provide an update on the Operator pattern introduced by CoreOS, adopted by many community projects like Rook, Prometheus, and others, and supported by this spring’s release of the Operator Framework by Red Hat. With an understanding of Operators in place, the session will go on to detail the Operator Framework and its main components, the Operator SDK and the Lifecycle management backplane.

How to Position Your Globus Data Portal for Success Ten Good PracticesGlobus
Science gateways allow science and engineering communities to access shared data, software, computing services, and instruments. Science gateways have gained a lot of traction in the last twenty years, as evidenced by projects such as the Science Gateways Community Institute (SGCI) and the Center of Excellence on Science Gateways (SGX3) in the US, The Australian Research Data Commons (ARDC) and its platforms in Australia, and the projects around Virtual Research Environments in Europe. A few mature frameworks have evolved with their different strengths and foci and have been taken up by a larger community such as the Globus Data Portal, Hubzero, Tapis, and Galaxy. However, even when gateways are built on successful frameworks, they continue to face the challenges of ongoing maintenance costs and how to meet the ever-expanding needs of the community they serve with enhanced features. It is not uncommon that gateways with compelling use cases are nonetheless unable to get past the prototype phase and become a full production service, or if they do, they don't survive more than a couple of years. While there is no guaranteed pathway to success, it seems likely that for any gateway there is a need for a strong community and/or solid funding streams to create and sustain its success. With over twenty years of examples to draw from, this presentation goes into detail for ten factors common to successful and enduring gateways that effectively serve as best practices for any new or developing gateway.

In software engineering, the right architecture is essential for robust, scalable platforms. Wix has undergone a pivotal shift from event sourcing to a CRUD-based model for its microservices. This talk will chart the course of this pivotal journey.
Event sourcing, which records state changes as immutable events, provided robust auditing and "time travel" debugging for Wix Stores' microservices. Despite its benefits, the complexity it introduced in state management slowed development. Wix responded by adopting a simpler, unified CRUD model. This talk will explore the challenges of event sourcing and the advantages of Wix's new "CRUD on steroids" approach, which streamlines API integration and domain event management while preserving data integrity and system resilience.
Participants will gain valuable insights into Wix's strategies for ensuring atomicity in database updates and event production, as well as caching, materialization, and performance optimization techniques within a distributed system.
Join us to discover how Wix has mastered the art of balancing simplicity and extensibility, and learn how the re-adoption of the modest CRUD has turbocharged their development velocity, resilience, and scalability in a high-growth environment.

65. Source 2 Image Walk Through
Build
OpenShift automates the Docker
image build process with
Source-to-Image (S2I). S2I
combines source code with a
corresponding Builder image from
the integrated Docker registry.
Builds can also be triggered
manually or automatically by setting
a Git webhook. Add in Build
pipelines

66. Source 2 Image Walk Through
Deploy
OpenShift automates the
deployment of application
containers across multiple Node
hosts via the Kubernetes
scheduler. Users can automatically
trigger deployments on application
changes and do rollbacks,
