The project achieved 15 editathons, 19 training sessions, 27 speaking engagements and engaged 280 new users and around 100 cultural institutions. It led to 250 new images uploaded, 76 new articles created and 160 articles improved. Though it did not achieve some goals like policy changes at institutions or large-scale image releases, it helped participants feel more confident in open knowledge work. Key challenges included fears around loss of control, revenue, or skills as well as conservative attitudes and risk aversion. Lessons involved building skills, improving infrastructure and changing attitudes.

- Hi, this is me, I’m a Wikimedian in Residence What is a WiR? Going to talk about the project I’ve been working on since January 2015, and what I’m calling the diversification of engagement for Scotland’s museums
- Museums can & do benefit from OK, and that OK is a very natural and normal thing for cultural organisations to do.
- This image not openly licensed Available on the website for anyone to read, but the important thing to note here is that the Scottish Government empowered MGS as the national development body in 2012 to deliver on these outcomes for the sector. And my project links to something on nearly all of these Aims. The longer I’ve been involved, the more thoroughly I’ve been convinced that OK is a if not the central objective for the development of digital direction for the sector. Digital fits everywhere - hardly surprising. Maximise the potential of our collections & culture for future generations Strengthen connections between museums, people & places to inspire greater public participation, learning & wellbeing Empower a diverse workforce to increase their potential for the benefit of the sector and society Forge a sustainable future for sector organisations & encourage a culture of enterprise Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and ambition Develop a global perspective using Scotland’s collections & culture
- Wiki Working Group, and MGS enthusiasm - 2 staff now regular editors, 1 regularly attending editathons & meetups in GLA/EDB
- This image not openly licensed Particularly fruitful avenue - matching educational institutions and cultural institutions - for co-production of open knowledge artefacts. Contrasts with usual education institution involvement with WM, because of partnership and co-curation/creation aspect. GLAMWiki partnership - should always be about mutual benefit
- Not a huge sample size, to be honest - full details are available on my project page on Wikipedia. Hopefully… the work that I’ve been doing has a long tail - my hope is that this work has sparked interest in those with whom I’ve worked, and helped them to advocate in their own places of work, networks. 85% said that they would recommend this type of project to another museum. These are “softer” outcomes, but they’re valuable - and they’re valuable because attitudinal change is the key to making a museum open ready.
- Large-scale image release didn’t happen Policy change takes time and it requires more intensive work with host institutions than would be possible with this project. Wasn’t a set objective… but would have been nice.
- Bit of groundhog day to this. The same fears came up from institution to institution, and they were very similar to those that I’ve seen before, a few years ago, trying to convince techphobic charities to embrace social media.
- Courage? Sector development Need to move on from just the early adopters
