Sweden’s premier museum of fine art and design
Founded in 1866, a growing collection of 700 000
items, including paintings, sculptures, prints and
drawings as well as applied art and design.
Due to renovation
closed to the public since 2013
reopening 2018

150 years ago, this was one of
the world’s most modern art
museums. Now, it is about time
again.

What is Open Access / OpenGLAM?
The Open Definition can be summed up as:
“A piece of data or content is open if anyone is free to use, reuse,
and redistribute it — subject only, at most, to the requirement to
attribute and/or share-alike.”

Step 1
In 2013, we made
70 000 objects from
the Nationamuseum’s
collections availabe
on Europeana

Step 2
The reaction from Europeana and
users opened up the discussion on
free licenses again.

Step 3 - wasn’t us.
• In 2014, Wikimedia Sweden downloaded data on 6500 paintings to
Wikidata via Europeana’s API.
• Nationalmuseum corrected and completed some data
• Nationalmuseum provided data on all artists in the internal
database to kulturnav.se, which were also linked to existing artists
on Wikidata and the corresponding paintings.

more than 1500 museums
with artworks on Wikidata

Step 4 – wasn’t us, either
• In 2016, Europeana launched the massively succesful campaign
Europeana280
• Nationalmuseum co-coordinated the Swedish contribution to
Europeana280 together with the Swedish National Heritage Board
• The contribution re-kindled a discussion on licensing again, as The CC
BY SA license led to a restriction of our material in the Europeana280
campaign

Step 4 – wasn’t us, either
In 2016 the Swedish National Archives published a new image policy:
The Swedish National Archives do not assume that a new
copyright emerges from the digital reproduction of works of
art in the Public Domain
This led to a re-discussion of licensing CC BY SA at Nationalmuseum:
The license CC BY SA forces the user to always state the copyright
holder, in our case, the museum and the photographer. The law says
the photographer should be named ”according to good practice”

Step 5 A new image policy for Nationalmuseum
- All reproductions of two-
dimensional works of art where
placed in the Public Domain
- All available images of
paintings in the Public Domain
were provided as iiif-resources
- Nationalmuseum uploaded
3000 images to Wikimedia

We will not always have these headlines. Do the images
get used?
In the first week of being online, our images on Wikimedia Commons
were used in more than 100 articles and they were viewed 104 000
times.
In 6 weeks they had 400 000 views.
Now, they are in 330 articles, of which Nationalmuseum wrote 15.
They have had 10 million views in 2017.

  • 7. 7 What is Open Access / OpenGLAM? The Open Definition can be summed up as: “A piece of data or content is open if anyone is free to use, reuse, and redistribute it — subject only, at most, to the requirement to attribute and/or share-alike.” Openglam.org

  • 13. 13 Step 1 In 2013, we made 70 000 objects from the Nationamuseum’s collections availabe on Europeana
  • 14. 14 Step 2 The reaction from Europeana and users opened up the discussion on free licenses again.
  • 15. 15 Step 3 - wasn’t us. • In 2014, Wikimedia Sweden downloaded data on 6500 paintings to Wikidata via Europeana’s API. • Nationalmuseum corrected and completed some data • Nationalmuseum provided data on all artists in the internal database to kulturnav.se, which were also linked to existing artists on Wikidata and the corresponding paintings.

  • 18. 18 Step 4 – wasn’t us, either • In 2016, Europeana launched the massively succesful campaign Europeana280 • Nationalmuseum co-coordinated the Swedish contribution to Europeana280 together with the Swedish National Heritage Board • The contribution re-kindled a discussion on licensing again, as The CC BY SA license led to a restriction of our material in the Europeana280 campaign

  • 20. 20 Step 4 – wasn’t us, either In 2016 the Swedish National Archives published a new image policy: The Swedish National Archives do not assume that a new copyright emerges from the digital reproduction of works of art in the Public Domain This led to a re-discussion of licensing CC BY SA at Nationalmuseum: The license CC BY SA forces the user to always state the copyright holder, in our case, the museum and the photographer. The law says the photographer should be named ”according to good practice”

  • 26. 26 We will not always have these headlines. Do the images get used? In the first week of being online, our images on Wikimedia Commons were used in more than 100 articles and they were viewed 104 000 times. In 6 weeks they had 400 000 views. Now, they are in 330 articles, of which Nationalmuseum wrote 15. They have had 10 million views in 2017.

  1. Since 2016 we provide unrestricted access to parts of our collection via our own website, Europeana, Wikimedia, Wikidata and GitHub. Even if we for practical reasons cannot provide access to our whole collection, I am convinced that we can call ourselves an OpenGLAM institution. It is more important to start the journey than to come up with a perfect solution for the whole collection the next day.
  2. 1906, Sir Francis Galton set out to show that the crowd could not be entrusted with important decisions, by ananlysing entries to a weight estimation contest. Instead of proving this, he laid the gound for a theory called the wisdom of the crowds, saying the sum of a lot of individually developed conclusions often come closer to the truth than the analysis of a few experts.
  3. In 2013 Nationalmuseum provided data and images of 70 000 objects from the Nationalmuseum’s collections on Europeana. Due to internal policies, the images were marked with an All Rights reserved Statement. http://www.athenaplus.eu/
  4. Our collection was met with positive reactions, but a lot of users asked the questions on why Public Domain works were marked with an All Rights Reserved mark. In 2014, Nationalmuseum marked all digital images were not restricted by other regulations, with the CC BY SA license. http://collection.nationalmuseum.se/eMuseumPlus

With 6500 of paintings described in Wikidata, we started seeing user-generated lists on Wikipedia on art in the Nationalmuseum’s collections, visualistions of data (with poor image material) The availibility of artist data made it easy to ameriolate specific articles with references to our collections. Nationalmuseum’s staff actively took part in other museum’s editathons as it was easy to find material related to our collections Moreso, the automatic links via kulturnav provided direct links from autobiographic articles back to Nationalmuseums online database.

  7. Note that with a CC BY SA license, you cannot tweet or share an images without stating the photographer. However, you do not need to state the artist of the original work.

  9. In collaboration with Wikimedia Sweden, Nationalmuseum uploaded 3000 images to Wikimedia Commons, marked Public Domain, and provided with a license that kindly asks the users to respect both the original and the photographic work that Nationalmuseum’s photographers invested into digitisation.
  10. We did think that this release would be interesting for a lot of people, but we were not prepared for the massive echo we got.
  11. Since we made our images available on Wikimedia Commons we have seen an increase of our objects on Social Media, which means that Nationalmuseums collections have become a more relevant issue of peoples’ lives.
  12. Our Wikidata-dataset has been popular in national and international hackathons.
  13. Europeana’s and Europana-related projects increasingly make use of Nationalmuseum’s material
