2. 20 Oct 2010 • Incandescent phase out webinar 2 Stucture of the phase out:taking the lamps away in steps Starting 2009 with all frosted incandescents AND all clear 100W clear lamps Alternatives available for frosted lamps (CFLs, diffuse source) Large savings were achieved quickly 2010, all 75 W clear lamps phased out 2011, all 60W clear lamps to be phased out 2012, clear lamps 40W and below to be phased out Alternatives are mainly mains voltage halogen and CFLs, LEDS are slowly coming in

Phase out was mostly smooth, but with fierce pockets of resistance Differences between countries E.g., Germany, Austria and UK very much resistance mercury, health concerns (UV radiation, lupus, autism...) Design issues (“Don’t take my cosy lighting bulb away”, “we hate the light from CFLs”) The lighting industry association (ELC) supported the phase out legislation, but the degree of enthusiasm varied between manufacturers.
