Jaroslav Řehůřek was born in 1924 in Kunštát, Czechoslovakia. He received several Czechoslovakian patents for inventions in machining. In 1967, he became the technical director of a new Czechoslovakia-France company in Paris. Since 1975, he has lived in Paris but remains connected to his hometown of Kunštát, where he supports younger and older residents. Since 2007, Řehůřek has offered cooperation and financial support to his former school in Kunštát, donating over a quarter million Czech crowns for activities and equipment. He continues to support cultural events for the school.

Hero of my surroundings
My father saved the lives of two neighbors on separate occasions. The first time, a neighbor fell from a ladder while picking cherries and stopped breathing. My father provided first aid, called emergency services, and stayed with her until help arrived. She survived with only a broken arm. A few months later, the same neighbor fell down the basement stairs, hit her head, and was bleeding heavily. My father helped stop the bleeding and gave her ice for her head until she regained consciousness and was taken to the hospital, where she recovered despite a severe concussion. Both neighbors survived thanks to my father's quick actions in responding to their emergencies.

One boy quickly called emergency services while the other tried to communicate with the injured man by stroking his neck and face. Medics arrived and were able to revive the man, saying that the boys' quick action saved the man's life. The man later thanked the boys for their help.

They returned the dog, who was reunited happily with its owner. The girls received thanks and treats for saving the lost dog.

Radek Sýs is a 38-year-old police officer from Brno, Czech Republic who has donated blood and plasma 93 times for free. He started donating when he was 25 years old at a hospital in Boskovice. For his numerous donations, he has received bronze, silver, and gold Jánský plaques as well as a gold cross award. Jánský plaques are awarded by the Red Cross to recognize frequent blood donors in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Donating blood involves giving nearly half a liter of blood through a sharp syringe, which most donors do not find painful, especially with the company of friendly nurses.

This talk deals with European experiences with collective strategies for the development of the performing arts, with a focus on Flanders. In the 1980’s, international networks and platforms for (co)production and presentation were set up (e.g. IETM). In the case of Flanders, this coincided with diverse domestic strategies: a.o. the emergence of artists collectives, a touring circuit, an advocacy organisation,… In a time when government support for contemporary performing arts was absent, the interplay of these strategies resulted not only in Flemish artists being launched on international platforms. It also lead to the development of an innovative Flemish funding system. It enabled artists, companies and producing houses to develop their work and to fully engage in a transnational networks for (co-)production and presentation.
This way of working has resulted in growth: more productions, in more venues and countries all around the world. There are, however, downsides to the story. With government spending under pressure throughout Europe, producers are being forced to rely on an ever growing number of increasingly vulnerable partners. The position of individual artists in this network has become precarious. How sustainable is this growth in the longer term? Are the limits of the transnational co-production and distribution model in sight? How can we re-think our current working models?
