Open Source Docs: The Good, The Bad, and the WTF?!

Open source documentation is generally awful, often frightening, and sometimes it’s just outright weird. In this discussion, I will show you examples from the entire spectrum of open source documentation, in an effort to try and help you avoid some of the worst mistakes made by others before you. We will discuss why documentation is important for open source projects, and how to go about getting it written, and written well, without making too much of a fool out of yourself.

Aeolus - Clouds Flying in Assembly
As clouds become commonplace, there is a need to manage virtual instances across a great variety of clouds and cloud-like environments. Aeolus, an open source project recently launched by Red Hat, lives in the space just below where traditional config management tools like Puppet live.

One of the big hurdles for an enterprise to move to the cloud is the fear of getting locked into a specific cloud implementation. This is one of the big reasons apart from security of data that keeps most of the enterprises out of the cloud space. Currently each vendor provides their unique set of API to interact with their Cloud services. This mandates a need to recode and refactor when moving from one cloud provider to the other.
jClouds is a multi cloud framework which allows connection to multiple clouds such as Amazon, VMWare, Azure, and Rackspace. jClouds provides portable abstractions for cloud specific features, thus allowing the application to move from one cloud vendor to the other with relative ease. jClouds also had a simulators to operate in restricted environments like Google App Engine and Android. Unit testing and mocking is made easy through stub connections which simulate the cloud.

GMP - GOOD DOCUMENTATION PRACTICES
Good documentation practice (commonly abbreviated GDP, recommended to abbreviate as GDocP to distinguish from "good distribution practice" also abbreviated GDP) is a term in the pharmaceutical industry to describe standards by which documents are created and maintained. While some GDocP standards are codified by various competent authorities, others are not but are considered cGMP (with emphasis on the "c", or "current"). Some competent authorities release or adopt guidelines, and they may include non-codified GDocP expectations. While authorities will inspect against these guidelines and cGMP expectations in addition to the legal requirements and make comments or observations if departures are seen. In the past years, the application of GDocP is also expanding to cosmetic industry, excipient and ingredient manufacturers.

Monitoring and observability aren’t traditionally found in software curriculums and many of us cobble this knowledge together from whatever vendor or ecosystem we were first introduced to and whatever is a part of your current company’s observability stack.
While the dev and ops silo continues to crumble….many organizations still relegate monitoring & observability as the purview of ops, infra and SRE teams. This is a mistake - achieving a highly observable system requires collaboration up and down the stack.

Removing Uninteresting Bytes in Software Fuzzing
Imagine a world where software fuzzing, the process of mutating bytes in test seeds to uncover hidden and erroneous program behaviors, becomes faster and more effective. A lot depends on the initial seeds, which can significantly dictate the trajectory of a fuzzing campaign, particularly in terms of how long it takes to uncover interesting behaviour in your code. We introduce DIAR, a technique designed to speedup fuzzing campaigns by pinpointing and eliminating those uninteresting bytes in the seeds. Picture this: instead of wasting valuable resources on meaningless mutations in large, bloated seeds, DIAR removes the unnecessary bytes, streamlining the entire process.
In this work, we equipped AFL, a popular fuzzer, with DIAR and examined two critical Linux libraries -- Libxml's xmllint, a tool for parsing xml documents, and Binutil's readelf, an essential debugging and security analysis command-line tool used to display detailed information about ELF (Executable and Linkable Format). Our preliminary results show that AFL+DIAR does not only discover new paths more quickly but also achieves higher coverage overall. This work thus showcases how starting with lean and optimized seeds can lead to faster, more comprehensive fuzzing campaigns -- and DIAR helps you find such seeds.
