We propose
Bibliodiversity !

Combination of biblio + diversity, like in biodiversity.
As in the ecosystem, diversity is a key for innovation, evolution and
adaptability
Diversity for culture, publishing and research

• Diversity of languages
(not only English)

• Diversity of disciplines
(not only physics)

• Diversity of types of publications
(not only articles! Books are also important)

• Diversity of players
(not only Oxford)
The old power relations
are evolving as non-anglophones embrace open access
Now Scielo competes with
JSTOR.

Blue : JSTOR (restricted access) - Red : Scielo.br (open
access)
Maps show interest from a lot of
countries

Threats to diversity : “Matthew effect”

“The winner takes it all”
Tends to produce a domination of
monocultures…

Disciplines & languages

“The world’s most trusted citation index”
“Covering the leading scholarly literature”
In fact, the WOS is an island ignoring the majority of
journals
Only
this

But not …

In HSS, only 60 of 1000 French peer-reviewed journals are in
WOS !
But not Annales !
Historia and Positif
Magazines you can buy in a newsagent's

The most prestigious
French-language history journal, founded
by Lucien Febvre and Marc Bloch

And not Études
photographiques
The reference in photographic studies

Who said “Covering the leading scholarly literature” ?
The system is broken
Is it protectionism ?
Is it ignorance ?
It is violence against
diversity

We need serious new metrics

Humanites and social sciences are going
digital
They call for infrastructures
« We call for the creation of scalable
digital infrastructures responding to
real
needs.
These
digital
infrastructures
will
be
built
iteratively, based upon methods and
approaches that prove successful in
research communities. »

They will promote bibliodiversity in open
TACTICAL PROPOSALS
I

Publishing is often forgotten in research infrastructures because we focus on
research processes
Yet, it is the best way to convince our big bosses, just because of PUBLIC USE
Not only colleagues : usage by journalists, teachers, students and other people,
etc. The same public that Wikipedia
REMEMBER : 35 000 000 visits, 19 000 000 unique visitors
(impossible in restricted access)

http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
TACTICAL PROPOSALS

II
• Consider publishing as a node, or the missing link
between public demand and the deep research work
(rules of evidence)
• Visualization may be considered as a good example of
connecting both parts
• Models :
– DPLA
– Hypotheses

http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
TACTICAL PROPOSALS
III
If people love science (i.e. HSS)
Policy makers will provide money for it
How can we help people to like humanities and social sciences ?
By building attractive infrastructures !
Being boring
is not a sign of scientific quality !

http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
THINK ABOUT NASA AND CERN

Highly technical and abstract disciplines

With a clear and professionnal will of communication
REMEMBER

BIBLIODIVERSITY
FOR OPEN ACCESS AND (VERY) ATTRACTIVE DISCIPLINES
WITH AT LEAST A CONTINENTAL AMBITION

WITH (VERY) STRONG CONNECTIONS WITH THE RESEARCH
COMMUNITIES
WITH (VERY VERY) STRONG INTEREST IN PUBLIC USE

  • 31. TACTICAL PROPOSALS I Publishing is often forgotten in research infrastructures because we focus on research processes Yet, it is the best way to convince our big bosses, just because of PUBLIC USE Not only colleagues : usage by journalists, teachers, students and other people, etc. The same public that Wikipedia REMEMBER : 35 000 000 visits, 19 000 000 unique visitors (impossible in restricted access) http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
  • 32. TACTICAL PROPOSALS II • Consider publishing as a node, or the missing link between public demand and the deep research work (rules of evidence) • Visualization may be considered as a good example of connecting both parts • Models : – DPLA – Hypotheses http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
  • 33. TACTICAL PROPOSALS III If people love science (i.e. HSS) Policy makers will provide money for it How can we help people to like humanities and social sciences ? By building attractive infrastructures ! Being boring is not a sign of scientific quality ! http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
  • 34. THINK ABOUT NASA AND CERN Highly technical and abstract disciplines With a clear and professionnal will of communication
  • 35. REMEMBER BIBLIODIVERSITY FOR OPEN ACCESS AND (VERY) ATTRACTIVE DISCIPLINES WITH AT LEAST A CONTINENTAL AMBITION WITH (VERY) STRONG CONNECTIONS WITH THE RESEARCH COMMUNITIES WITH (VERY VERY) STRONG INTEREST IN PUBLIC USE http://fr.fotopedia.com/items/flickr-5687300963
