Research libraries in a European e-science infrastructureLIBER Europe
Which role can research libraries in a European e-science infrastructure?
E-science and digital preservation are crucial parts of the 2009-2012 strategy of the European Research LIbraries. They offer great opportunities for research libraries for getting involved in the research and education environment from the very start of data creation. Digital Preservation should not be done for its own sake but as a way to valorise knowledge (use and re-use). We have to break the walls between all stakeholders in digital preservation (libraries, datacentres, researchers, publishers). Research institutes need librarians with a good understanding of modern research, with an ability to bring the library’s services into the researcher’s environment and integrate data sharing and curation in the researcher’s workflow. We need researchers with good understanding of information and curation matters.
Library labs as experimental incubators for digital humanities researchSally Chambers
This presentation was delivered as one of the keynotes at the 23rd International Conference on Theory and Practice of Digital Libraries (TPDL 2019) on 9-12 September 2019 at OsloMet - Oslo Metropolitan University, Oslo, Norway. http://www.tpdl.eu/tpdl2019/keynotes/
Can we consider libraries as the laboratories of the humanities? If so, would they be good places to observe and better understand the everyday practices of the humanist at work? Similarly, can the notion of the laboratory as a place of scientific experimentation be applied to libraries as a place to experiment with digital cultural heritage collections? Could “library labs” enable humanities researchers, cultural heritage professionals and computer scientists to work more closely together to push the boundaries of contemporary humanistic enquiry? Using Bruno Latour’s anthropological observations of the scientific practices of biologists in their laboratory as a starting point, we will consider the concept of libraries as the laboratories of the humanities. Extending this concept further, we will consider, “what is a library lab?” by examining the activities of library labs internationally. Finally, we will introduce the emerging Digital Research Lab at the Royal Library of Belgium (KBR) as part of a long-term collaboration with the Ghent Centre for Digital Humanities (GhentCDH). Using “KBR Labs” as a case study, we will consider the role that library labs could play as experimental incubators for digital humanities research.
Summary from presentations by Michel Steen-Hansen at a HIBOLIRE seminar in Copenhagen, December 14-15, 2009
Will the library spirit continue in the future?
Yes…..
– if we redefine the Library in a political context
The question then is, how to make the political decision-makers understand, promote and finance these changes.
I think our major challenges just now is to describe a new narrative frame to get public recognition
New narrative frame for the libraries
We need to create a new narrative frame, or should I say, create a definition for what the modern library is and we need to keep debating how to describe it.
We need to develop strategies to gain access to the politicians to convince them of the continued relevance of libraries in modern society.

Digital cultural heritage as humanities data: a labs approachSally Chambers
This presentation was given on 17th April 2020 as part of a #DH Hangout (during the Corona Virus) instigated by Lancaster University Digital Humanities Hub and Co-Organised by the Ghent Centre of Digital Humanities and the Digital Humanities Lab (DH_Lab) associated with NOVA-FCSH of Universidade NOVA de Lisboa.
Presentation from Izaskun Lacunza, LIBER Executive Director in the Sweedish Library Days. The LIBER Strategy and its three priorities i) Scholarly Communications and Research Infrastructures, ii) Reshaping the Library and iii) Advocacy and Communications are discussed. The presentation focuses on how by association, better levels of dialogue can be reached with policy makers and rest of stakeholders
The new director of The Danish Library Association, Mr. Michel Steen-Hansen, gives a short introduction to The Danish Library Association based on a special association structure with local politicians as well as library professionals on the Council.
A main theme of this introduction will be to what degree political consensus is needed in this kind of organizational setup.
The Danish Library Association is organized on the basis of a number of local associations working on regional level. These local associations elect representatives to the Council of the National association. The Council elects from within its members an Executive Committee with ten members including a president, who is always a politician, and two vice presidents, one a politician and the other a library professional.
Michel Steen-Hansen will then introduce some current issues in focus,
including free an equal access in the modern society and some new programs

The future-of-the-academic-information-supply-chain-oct2012Julien Houssiere
The papers cover diverse subjects and reveal some surprising insights into possible future roles for the library and others in the supply chain. Experts share opinions on new and emerging technologies, changing research practices, trends in user behaviour/expectations and views on a variety of access and business models. Unsurprisingly, budgetary pressures have a significant impact across all areas of the supply chain, but some experts feel this can be used to drive innovation. Other future forces for change include mobile technology and the importance of China, India and other emerging economies in shaping publishers’ activities.
