INTRODUCTION
Mathematics laboratory is a place where students can learn and
explore mathematical concepts and verify mathematical facts and
theorems through a variety of activities using different materials. This
activities may be carried out by the teacher or the students to explore, to
learn , to stimulate interest and develop favourable attitude towards
mathematics.
NEED AND PURPOSE OF MATHEMATICS
LABORATORY
Laboratory in mathematics provides an opportunity to students to
understand and internalize the basic mathematical concepts through
concrete objects and situations. The laboratory allows and encourage the
students to think, discuss with each other and teacher and assimilate the
concepts in a more effective manner. It enable the teacher to
demonstrate, explain and reinforces abstract mathematical ideas by
using concrete objects, models, charts, graphs etc.
ACTIVITIES FOR MATHEMATICS
LABORATORY
Many students in schools even today show displeasure towards the
learning of maths. Students view mathematics as dull, boring and
stereotyped. Most of students think that mathematics mean to “get
something right” or to “get something wrong”.
A mathematics laboratory is a place where we find a collection of
games, puzzles, teaching aids and other materials for carrying out
activities. Mathematics is not an experimental science in the way in
which physics, chemistry and biology are a mathematics laboratory can
contribute greatly to the learning to the mathematical concepts and
skills.
MATERIALS AND EQUIPMENTS FOR A
MATHEMATICS LABORATORY
For the effective functioning of mathematics laboratory, it
should well equipped .A mathematics laboratory may contain the
following types of materials and equipments.
MATERIALS
CONCRETE MATERIALS
The mathematics laboratory should contain materials such as
beads, pebbles, sticks, balls frames, seeds, balance, weights, measuring
tapes, scissors, pins, abacus etc. Which are very helpful for
demonstrating elementary mathematics concepts.
MODELS
Various mathematical models which will offer opportunities for
students to explore and investigate should be placed in the mathematical
laboratory.
BLACKBOARD
A blackboard should be provided in the mathematics laboratory.
This helps in writing instructions, drawing geometrical figures and
illustration necessary for performing the laboratory work.
INSTRUMENTS AND EQUIPMENTS
DRAWING INSTRUMENTS
In mathematics laboratory, the students are required to draw and sketch
geometrical figures, graphs and so on. Therefore in every mathematics
laboratory there should be a set of drawing instruments like compass,
rulers, protractor etc. Stencils for drawing geometrical figures are also
important tools in a mathematics laboratory.
WEIGHING AND MEASURING
INSTRUMENTS
Mathematical laboratory work, quite ofteninvolves the important
activities of weighing and measuring. Therefore, instruments used for
measuring and weighing such a measuring tapes, balances of different
types, measuring jar, and graduated cylinder should be there is
mathematics laboratory.
FUNCTIONS OF A MATHEMATICS
LABORATORY
Make mathematics teaching and learning, interesting and
powerful for the students.
Provide activities that arose the curiosity of the students and
maintain there interest in learning.
Enable students to to develop proper skills is handling
equipments and gadget.
Makes students appreciate the practical applicability of
mathematical principles and laws.
Concretise the abstract mathematical concepts.
Help the students develop powers of observation , analysis
and drawing inferences .
CONCLUSION
Mathematics laboratory has not yet received the same general
acceptance as a science laboratory. This is probably because the
mathematics teacher themselves have not recognized the significance of
mathematics laboratory as the science teachers have. Actually most
mathematical teachers have been very passive as to this respect.
Mathematics laboratory provides opportunity to exhibit the relatedness
of mathematical concepts with everyday life. It provide scope for greater
involvement of both the mind and hand which facilitate cognition.
