9. Details of the Organization
The Madhya Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation (MPSTDC) is a
government agency that conducts and regulates the tourism activities of
the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The MPSTDC is headquartered
at Bhopal and has offices across all the districts of Madhya Pradesh. The agency
also operates homestays, hotels, resorts, and tourist rest houses in different key
locations within the state. The department has the official slogan The Heart of
Incredible India.
Tourism in Madhya Pradesh has been an attraction of India because of its
location in the center of the country. Madhya Pradesh has won Best Tourism
State National award for 3 consecutive years i.e. 2017, 2016 and 2015.
As explained in the chapter on âCurrent Institutional Mechanismâ the M.P. State
Tourism Development Corporation was formed to stimulate and promote
tourism in the state. It also took upon itself the role of being the main provider
of facilities and basic tourist infrastructure, which is a pre-requisite for
development of tourism.
Thus some of the facilities provided by the Corporation are listed below:
1. Hotels, Lodges and Dormitories for providing accommodation to tourists.
2. Transport facilities by way of cars, coaches and Jeeps.
3. Tourist Information Centers, both within and outside the state.
4. Operation and maintenance of the âComputerized Central Reservation
System.
5. Marketing and operation of package tours
The salient features of these facilities are given below:
Hotels, Lodges and Tourist Bungalows
A. Accommodation at twenty two tourist centers.
B. A total of 40 hotels, lodges, Tourist Bungalows of various kinds.
C. A total of 472 rooms comprising of AC Deluxe and Suites, AC Rooms,
NonAC rooms and Dormitories.
D. Three Cafeterias and Way-Side Amenities It can be seen from the above
description that the MP STDC has got a very wide and extensive network
covering almost all important tourist centers and offering a variety of
accommodation to suit all pockets.
However, with such a widespread network and many of the hotels and
bungalows being quite small i.e.4-8 rooms, it is very difficult to manage and the
overheads etc are very high. Similarly the controls are difficult and with a
centralized control system, bureaucracy is bound to creep in, adversely affecting
10. the efficiency and quality of service, even though the management has taken
several steps to develop independence and entrepreneurial qualities in its local
managers.
The problem faced by the corporation today, with many of its properties run-
down and requiring extensive refurbishing, low occupancy due to low tourist
arrivals and their inability to compete with private competition, wherever it
exists. This is despite the properties being located in the best of locations and
many of them having great potential as heritage sites.
The hotels division of the corporation is thus caught in a vicious cycle, with poor
image, low occupancy, high overheads all of them adding to losses and thereby
resulting in a resource crunch. The financial crunch does not allow refurbishing
and upgrading of the properties, which in turn further affects its image, resulting
in lower occupancy and higher losses.
The decision of the Government to disinvest from the hotel operation and for
privatization/leasing of the same was correct and timely, but did not succeed.
While the reasons for failure to attract sufficient bids are many, it has resulted
in a feeling of insecurity in the minds of both the workers of the hotels division
of the corporation and it has also adversely affected both the morale and the
investment decisions of the corporation.
Computerized Reservation
System The department has recently commissioned a Computerized
Reservation System, which is a very welcome development and the department
deserves all the praise for it. However, in order to get full benefit from the
facility, it is advisable to connect the system to the travel agents and airlines
system as well, so that a large number of travel related persons could access the
centralized reservation system.
Also to get maximum mileage, this facility should be widely publicized, both
through the press medium and through the internet.
Transport:
The MPSTDC operates a fleet of six coaches and seventeen cars. The fleet may
appear small compared to the tourist centers but MP has a well-developed
system of private transport and tourist coaches who run special coaches to these
destinations.
Consultantâs Recommendations
1. The role of MPSTDC: There is a need to change the role definition of the
11. Tourism Development Corporation as envisaged in the tourism policy. It
should concentrate on marketing and on promotion of tourism, together
with their policy-making role.
2. Marketing Orientation: The need of the hour is aggressive marketing, and
the MPSTDC should fully concentrate on it, with accountability for
achieving the tourist arrival figures. This would mean a change in the role
of tourist information offices from one of dispensing information to
aggressive marketing.
3. Disinvestments from hotels: The past attempts at disinvestments were
not successful because the hotel chains invited by the corporation did
not feel that the investments required were justified by the tourist traffic
projections. It is suggested that the disinvestments be attempted once
again. It may be advisable to engage some expert consultants to assist
the department in the process of privatization, and devise a plan after
taking the ground realities into account.
While there may be several changes possible in the new approach to
privatization, the consultants suggest that the following changes in approach
may be considered:
a) There should not be any insistence on selling a block of properties
comprising of both good and poor properties. The bidders may be allowed
to choose any property.
b) The operation of those properties, which have a lot of potential but are
not running well today, should be improved both by improved
maintenance and by improved marketing. They may then become
attractive to prospective bidders in a year or two.
c) Since many properties are located in remote locations with a room
strength of less than ten, it may not be viable for a chain to acquire them
and run them profitably because of high central overheads. Such
properties may be sold or leased to local operators.
d) There should be an offer to link all the properties through the centralized
computerized reservation system and also arrange/help in tying up with
some professional chains for marketing. e. Arrangements should also be
made for the same chain to also provide training and management inputs
to improve/professionalize the management of such small properties.
If parties are not coming forth with outright sale or long lease with upfront
payments, the corporation may also consider handing over the management
only, with a percentage of turnover. This will allow private parties low on
finances but high on resolve and intent to enter the field of tourism and infuse
12. the much needed freshness. Hotel Management Graduates and other
professionals could be specially targeted for such an exercise.
13. CO-structure of MPTDC
Natural environment
Bhedaghat Dhuandhar Falls, Jabalpur
The natural environment of Madhya Pradesh is varied Consisting largely of a
plateau streaked with the mountain ranges of the Vindhyas and the Satpuras,
the hills give rise to the main river system - Narmada and the Tapti, running from
east to west, and the Chambal, Sone, Betwa, Mahanadi west to east.
One half of the state is forested and offers a unique panorama of wildlife. In the
National Parks of Kanha, Bandhavgarh, Shivpuri and many others visitors have
the opportunity to see the tiger, the bison and a wide variety of deer and
antelope in natural surroundings.
World heritage sites
Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, largest temple in Khajuraho
Although the modern state of Madhya Pradesh came into being in 1956, its
cultural heritage is ancient and chequered. Innumerable monuments,
exquisitely carved temples, stupas, forts and palaces on hilltops, raise in the
visitors mind visions of empires and kingdoms, of the great warriors and
builders, poets and musicians, saints and philosophers; of Hinduism, Buddhism,
and Jainism. The famous Sanskrit poet-dramatist Kalidasa and the great
14. musician of the Mughal court, Tansen, were from Madhya Pradesh. They are
known all over the world.
Three sites in Madhya Pradesh have been declared World Heritage

fairs and festivals. Shivratri in Khajuraho, Bhojpur, Pachmarhi and Ujjain;
Dusshera in Jabalpur, Ramanavami in Chitrakoot and Orchha, Bhagoriya dance
in Jhabua and the annual festival of dances at Khajuraho are events for the
tourists to remember. The Malwa festival in Indore, Mandu and Ujjain, and
the Pachmarhi festival bring alive the rich folk and tribal culture of the state in
colourful celebrations. Gwalior trade fair is India's second largest trade fair. It is
organised in various sectors which includes electronic sector, automobile sector,
food sector, fun (jhula) sector etc. Gwalior carnival is a newly introduced festival
in 2012. It was organised for 22 days in December. It is planned to organise
carnival every year. Nimar Utsav takes place every year in the holy city of

18. Product and service offered
Madhya Pradesh tourism runs deluxe coaches and luxury buses, which connect
all major tourist destinations on Madhya Pradesh. An excellent network of
railways also links various cities of the state. Taxis, auto rickshaws, tempos are
some other modes of transport which offer short distance services within the
city.
Madhya Pradesh tourism is a service product by nature and involves tours in the
exotic locales of Madhya Pradesh. There are different kinds of tour products.
īˇ Caravan tourism Package â A product which provides tourists with their
own caravan to travel
īˇ Eco tourism package â As the name suggests, it is a tour for tourists who
love landscapes and forests
īˇ Rural tourism â Involves tours to Amla and Pranpur
īˇ Adventure tourism â An interesting tourism concept wherein they invite
tourists for the âChambal challengeâ
Thus some of the facilities provided by the Corporation are listed below:
6. Hotels, Lodges and Dormitories for providing accommodation to tourists.
7. Transport facilities by way of cars, coaches and Jeeps.
8. Tourist Information Centers, both within and outside the state.

20. Suggestion and recommendation
During the on the job training at Madhya Pradesh tourism development
corporation, I gained practical exposure of working in tourism board which will
also help a lot once I will enter the industry after completing our course. At On
the job training, I got to learn to make corporate calls and emailing to inform
about various new offerings or products by MPSTDC. I also learnt a lot about the
destinations covered in the itineraries and most prominently the ones for which
maximum bookings are done. The most popular tour packages for MP darshan
is khajuraho, Chanderi, Gwalior, Shivpuri,Mandu, Jabalpur, and national parks.
To sum up, my experience at MPSTDC, B2B- inbound department was full of
learning. As this was the first time I got to work with a travel Torusm board, it
gave me an insight of how various departments have to work in harmony with
each other to accomplish organizational goals. The interaction I had with such a
great mentors was an overwhelming experience in itself. The whole department
was very supportive and always engaged me in some kind of learning or the
other to make sure that in these three months we must learn the basic essentials
to enter the tourism board.
I cordially want to thank all the mentors I met during my training period for
enriching my experience with great learning and memories.
Some suggestions and recommendations based on my observations during
three month period of On the job training are:
There is a need of Liaison officer who can do the filing work so that operations
team can focus more on pending queries and generate more sales.
There should be fixed lunch timing as sometimes it happens that employees
have to skip lunch because of the excess work pressure.
There should be fixed working hours.
Some incentives must be given to employees based on the performance to boost
their motivation level and employee satisfaction.
1. They should improve their Ideas, packages, Itineraries and provide
attractive offers according to customerâs demand to grow their image
in the tourism market.
2. They should improve their infrastructure for meetings in their own
21. office.
3. They should publish their itineraries, new packages on portal to get
more business from customers.
4. They should improve their advertisement style and try to publish their
products market in a new style to increase sales.
5. They should modify their website and packages.
6. MPSTDC has to improve the quality in communication with the
employees regarding the work which assigned to the employees.
7. MPSTDC has to improve the division of proper work with equal to all
employees in an appropriate way.
8. The board has to maintain the proper database of the agentâs details
because itâs really essential in business point of view.
9. They should properly work on the agentâs feedback for improving quality
of service.
22. Conclusion
While working with MPSTDC I had quite good experience. MPSTDC give me
opportunity to work on online portal for some duration which gave me
motivation to workwith full potential as board is given us responsibility only
by trustingon us. I have learned a lot of things related to online travel
industry and travel industry while working with MPSTDC likehow sales can
be done, how packages can be customized etc.
Overall I had a great experience while working with MPSTDC They have a
good team. There is no problem regarding revertof the queries & there
follow-up process. If I get opportunity to be a part of MPSTDC team. I think
itâs my pleasure to work with MPSTDC.
The study conducted on this organization during the period of OJT
concluded that the agents are contented with the organization. The
organization can perform well if they open more tourist information center
in other cities. This board with fantastic and professional operations and
sales can increase its revenue by introducing more branches all over MP.
Thus, the study has discovered several challenges and opportunities which
might help in the future development of board. The study trainee did was
based on the tour package sales with reference to MPSTDC The marketing
strategies of MPSTDC Are moderate but there is lotcan be done.
