I. Greeting. Warming up
T.: Good morning! I’m glad to see you today. How are you? Are you sleepy? Wake up and let’s
start our work. Today at the lesson we’ll continue discussing sports and games and besides

we’ll speak about the most important event in the world – the Olympic Games. So the topic of
today’s lesson is “The Olympic Games”. Today we are going to read and discuss the text about
the Olympic Games; to watch a cartoon about the Olympic Games in ancient Greece and of
courseto speak about ancient games. So by the end of the lesson you will be able to speak about
the Olympic Games.
To begin with, let’s revise the most popular kinds of sport. Watch the cartoon (Funny
Olympic Cartoon) and name the activities.

Take these cards (Card 1) and write down the names of different kinds of sport. There are
14 pictures, so you must write the names of 14 kinds of sport. Don’t forget to subscribe your
papers.

II. Reproduction
T.: At the previous lesson we spoke about the role of sport in our life. I promised to listen to
several students. One minute for you to revise you home task. All other students in order not to
be so boring, take these cards (Card 2), read the task and do the quiz. Try to find out how sporty
you are. Be very attentive, you must choose only 4 kinds of sport.

III. Presentation
T.: Now I invite you to Ancient Greece. Look at the pictures on these ancient vases. They are
devoted to the Olympic Games in Ancient Greece. But in order to speak about these games we
need some new vocabulary.
Look at the board. Listen and repeat the words. Try to remember them.
- Olympia- the place where the Olympic Games took place

Read the story and say what kinds of sport were popular among the ancient Greeks.
The Olympic Games
The Olympic games have а very long history. They began more than two thousand years
ago in Greece. The Greeks were very fond of music, plays and all kinds of physical exercises.
The famous Games at Olympia took place every four years. All the cities in Greece sent their
best athletes to take part in them. The strongest athletes competed in running, jumping,
wrestling, throwing the discus and boxing. There were also chariot races. The Games were very
popular, and thousands of Greek саmе to watch them. It was а tradition to stop wars for the
time of the Olympic Games, and people lived in peace.
The competitions lasted for five days. The winners in each kind of sport got an olive
wreath which was the highest honour. When the champions саmе back home, the people
greeted them with flowers. The people often put statues of their champions in the city squares,
because they brought glory to their native city.
