Communicative Goal: Learning about Ancient Olympic Games.
Time allotted: 80’
Grammar focus: past simple (recycled language)
Vocabulary: general and related to Ancient Greece and the origins of the ‘Olympics’

Warmer: (10’)
The teacher will ask the students to brainstorm any information they might know
about the Olympic Games. To help students she will write on BB some concepts –
Greece – Athletes – Sports.

Then she will give students a short set of questions to discuss with their partners.

    1. What do you know about the Olympic Games?
    2. Which is the country host for the Olympic Games this year?
    3. What do you know about the origin of the Olympic Games?



Web:(25’) the teacher will ask the students to complete a webquest.

What next (45’):the activities they are expected to do are included in the
webquest.

Time allotted: 80’
Grammar focus: present simple (recycled language)
Vocabulary: related to Olympic Games and OlympicSymbols.

Warmer:(10’)
The teacher will ask the students to share any information they might know about
London 2012 Olympic Games. To help students she will write on BB the following
concepts: the opening ceremony – the torch – the flame

Then in pairs they will have to answer the following question:

        What Olympic symbols do you know?
        Why are these symbols part of the Olympic Games?

Web: (20’)
 Students will have to visit a website and find information about the Olympic
symbols. They will use the following questions as a guide.

   1.   Which are the Olympic symbols?
   1.   What do the Olympic rings mean?
   2.   What is the Olympic motto?
   3.   What is the Olympic creed?
   4.   What is the Olympic oath?
   5.   What are The Olympic flame and torch?
   6.   What is the Opening ceremony?
   7.   What is the Closing Parade and Statement?
   8.   What is the Victory Ceremony?
   9.   What do these symbols represent for the athletes and spectators?

Activity 2:(20’) Students will be organized into 5 groups. The teacher will have a box
with some cards containing the questions used during the web stage.

Each group will pick up 2 cards from the box and they will have to make two
flashcards. Each of them should contain one ofthe symbols or phrases they have
taken (for example ‘the rings’ and ‘the oath’)

Activity 3: (10’) when they finish, each group will have to give a presentation about
the symbol or phrases while showing the flash cards they havealready made. To do
this activity they have to use all the possible information they have collected during
the web stage.

Time allotted: 60’
Grammar focus:
Vocabulary: General, related to sports and Olympic Games.

Warmer:(10’)
The teacher will ask the students to tell her what Olympic Athletes they know and
what sports they play.

Teacher will write the name of the Athletes on BB and will write students’outcomes
such as athlete nationality, sport, etc.



Web:(20’) students will have to look at the following websites and will have to find
information about 8 athletes. They must find out about their nationality, why they
are famous (sport), the numbers of medals each of them have won, and the host
country in which they won their prizes. While they are looking for the information
they will have to complete the following chart:

Activity 1: (10’) Pair work. Each student will be asked to take the role of one of the
athletes and in pairs they will have to ask and answer some questions about their
achievements and events in which they have taken part.

Activity 2: (20’) students will have to choose one of the athletes and write a short
biography including all the facts they have learned about him or her. The students
will have to use a printable from the same website.

The teacher will have a box with some cards containing the questions used during the web stage. Each group will pick up 2 cards from the box and they will have to make two flashcards. Each of them should contain one ofthe symbols or phrases they have taken (for example ‘the rings’ and ‘the oath’) Activity 3: (10’) when they finish, each group will have to give a presentation about the symbol or phrases while showing the flash cards they havealready made. To do this activity they have to use all the possible information they have collected during the web stage.
