There are two main systems for designating oil seals: metric and imperial. The metric system specifies the inner diameter, outer diameter, and width in millimeters. The imperial system provides these dimensions in inches, which must then be divided by 4 or 25.4 to convert to millimeters or inches, respectively. Both systems allow the dimensions of an oil seal to be determined from its designation numbers.
