This document discusses open education resources (OER), including their affordances and challenges. Some key affordances of OER are that they can help democratize education by allowing peer-to-peer sharing of resources. OER also lowers costs for students and provides flexibility for instructors and students. However, some challenges of using OER include managing proper attribution of sources, uncertainty around licensing information over time, ensuring accessibility of materials, limitations of search engines, and the time required to find and curate suitable OER materials.

Open Educational Resources:Challenges and BenefitsLauren Bryant
Textbooks from reliable publishers are indisputably a reliable resource. It’s hard enough to select the right material for your classroom, but also having to evaluate the content for veracity adds another layer of work for educators and all OER isn’t at the same standard.
This presentation shares an overview of Competency-Based Education (CBE). Find notes with transcript here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B0lwpuBcseSvcGptOVlmSjZOakk/view?usp=sharing

Adventures in Designing a MOOC with OER--STEMTech Denver, CO Nov. 2014cccschamp
This presentation was part of a session on creating a Technical Math MOOC with open educational resources. In October 2013, Colorado Community College System was awarded a TAACCCT 3 grant for Advanced Manufacturing. Our Advanced Manufacturing Industry partners were actively engaged in helping our faculty tailor their courses and course content to industry needs. Yet, the industry partners still had some complaints: I would like to send my employees to your colleges for courses, certificates and training but you want them to take and pass a technical math course before they can complete a course or certificate; my employees or I can’t afford the time and money to have them pass through the “gate keeping course.” Attendees will hear on how the CCCS system created a viable solution, a free Technical Math MOOC that works for faculty, industry and our students.

Operation “Blue Star” is the only event in the history of Independent India where the state went into war with its own people. Even after about 40 years it is not clear if it was culmination of states anger over people of the region, a political game of power or start of dictatorial chapter in the democratic setup.
The people of Punjab felt alienated from main stream due to denial of their just demands during a long democratic struggle since independence. As it happen all over the word, it led to militant struggle with great loss of lives of military, police and civilian personnel. Killing of Indira Gandhi and massacre of innocent Sikhs in Delhi and other India cities was also associated with this movement.
The Art Pastor's Guide to Sabbath | Steve ThomasonSteve Thomason
What is the purpose of the Sabbath Law in the Torah. It is interesting to compare how the context of the law shifts from Exodus to Deuteronomy. Who gets to rest, and why?
This is a presentation by Dada Robert in a Your Skill Boost masterclass organised by the Excellence Foundation for South Sudan (EFSS) on Saturday, the 25th and Sunday, the 26th of May 2024.
He discussed the concept of quality improvement, emphasizing its applicability to various aspects of life, including personal, project, and program improvements. He defined quality as doing the right thing at the right time in the right way to achieve the best possible results and discussed the concept of the "gap" between what we know and what we do, and how this gap represents the areas we need to improve. He explained the scientific approach to quality improvement, which involves systematic performance analysis, testing and learning, and implementing change ideas. He also highlighted the importance of client focus and a team approach to quality improvement.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

3. Affordances
•Sense of democratizing education
•Lowering costs for students
•Flexibility for instructors and students
•Providing relevant and up-to-date resources
•Promotes transfer
4. Affordance: Democratizing Education
• OER allows for a peer-to-peer exchanges for
educators through licensing and sharing information
• OER values and suggests an ethos of the “sharing
economy,” an extension of much of the remix culture
found in online communities
• OER allows educators to practice what they preach
with regard to access, relevance, and student-
focused education.

5. Affordance: Lowering Costs for Students
Creating a course centered around OER allows students to
bypass a financial barrier for education.

buying a book we’ll only read half of!” – anonymous

6. Affordance: Flexibility for instructors and
students
• Instructors can tailor assignments to
student need without guilt for
bypassing parts of an expensive
textbook
• Students can self-guide their learning
by choosing from OER readings curated
by the instructor or by OER sites.
Screenshot: WritingSpaces.org/essays
7. Affordance: Providing timely and up-to-date
resources
• OER leaves room in instruction for
adaptability to external political, social,
and cultural conversations.
• OER materials are often updated more
frequently and reflect changes in the
fields they represent in real-time.

8. Affordance: Promotes transfer!
• As a compositionist, I can see so many
potential avenues for transfer beyond
the first-year writing classroom by
using OER.
• Students can re-access materials long
beyond the course’s completion.
• Students can manipulate CC documents
to make them most usable for them
both during and after the course.

10. Challenge: Attribution management
• Managing copyright, licensing, and the history of where you found
your sources for later attribution.
• Effectively and correctly citing the
licensing, level of derivation, and
origins of those sources
Open Attribution Builder is licensed under CC BY 4.0.
Managed by WA SBCTC.
11. Challenge: Uncertainty of licensing information
• Loss of information: Between the time I discovered Getty’s Open
Content Program and now (as I create this PowerPoint), the “About”
section for licensing was removed.
• Because it was all web-based, were I to need to cite their images’
licensing (as I should), I would have a problem!
Screenshots of links to nowhere!
12. Challenge: Accessibility
• Not all OER materials are accessible to devices and programs that
allow various students to interact with them.
• For example, PDFs from Open-Source
textbooks can be wonderful for a student
reading on her tablet, but that same
material may be “read” as only an
image by a screen reader for another.

13. Challenge: Search engine availability and
functionality
• OER search engines exist!
• Much like managing a research project’s sources, the process
depends heavily on one’s flexibility with keywords.
Screenshot: OpenWA “Find OER” function
Screenshot: Wikimedia Commons search bar
14. Challenge: Time and Efficiency of OER-seeker
• Searching, collecting, and cataloging sources
takes time, especially when it’s new!
• One can end up looking as confused
as a cat expected to finish a puzzle…
