Temporary Works Forum
(TWf)
Forum
• Founded in 2009
– to encourage open discussion of any matter related to temporary works
• Membership
– open to any organisation within the industry and sharing this intent
• TWf is a not-for-profit company
– subscription-based
• Established for the benefit of the construction industry
• Its remit is primarily focussed on the UK
– whilst drawing also on experiences from overseas
Aims
• In general terms, to:
o Give authoritative guidance
• and, when required, professional leadership to the industry
o Consider the interfaces between permanent works and temporary
works
o Consider both current practice and likely developments
o Be aware of trends and innovations in design, construction and use
o Consider whether unacceptable risk exists or might arise in the future
• if believed so, to give warning to relevant bodies
o Consider whether further research and development appears
desirable
• avoid duplicating work
o Keep a watching brief on international issues
How we deliver these
• Delivery is by:
o Providing a forum for reasoned debate
o Arranging meetings for opinion-formers and experts
o Providing and contributing to education and guidance material
o Promoting best practice
o Seeking close working relationships with others
o Influencing industry and others
Members include:
• specialists, generalists with an interest, clients, interested bodies, retired individuals
• designers, manufacturers, trainers, contractors, client bodies and government
agencies
To date …
• TWf has:
o 140 No. members and is growing
o http://twforum.org.uk/members/
o Regular attendance at meetings
o c. 90 - 100 (& GCU video-link)
o Published guidance on several topics and has working groups
developing or updating guidance on several further topics
o http://twforum.org.uk/publications/public-twf-documents/
o Contributed to the drafting of new standards
o e.g. PASs 8811, PAS 8812, BS 5975
o Established a Centre of Excellence at City, University of London in
TW and Construction Method Engineering (with a new MSc)
o In conjunction with CITB, supported the development of:
✓ an industry standard training courses for TWC and TWS
✓ a new TW General Awareness Course
o Worked with others
o e.g. CPA, CIRIA, British Precast, IStructE, BCSA
o Sponsored a temporary works category at the
BCI Awards
o saw entries rise in both quality and number significantly
• We’d like to:
o Continue what we have established
o Broaden our membership
✓ include more clients and permanent works designers
o Develop training for permanent works designers
✓ consider the construction and demolition of their schemes to minimise the requirement for
temporary works
TWf Centre of Excellence
• Identified need for ongoing education and training, as
well as research
• Advertised in for organisations to approach us with their
proposals, NCE, 12.2.15
o Had six expressions of interest from UK universities
o Visited all of them
• The main aims set out were:
o Establish a Masters degree in temporary works
o Arrange CPD for practitioners
o Provide PhD research
What we have at City …
• We have huge support from the University
o along with the funds we have raised from our Membership
• Dr Andrew McNamara
o first Director of the Centre
• Masters Degree, Temporary works and construction
method engineering
o First entry was Autumn 2016
o Part-time over two years
o JBM accredited for further learning
• CPD modules
o Timing: to be agreed
• Lecturer appointed
• Self-funding Centre in 5 years (MSc)
• Research
– aim to investigate immediate issues that can give solutions to defined problems
• Additional funding from some members
(‘research club’)
– who influence the proposed research topics
• Fund a number of PhDs in temporary works
– we would like to be able to continue the research beyond this
Possible research at CoE
• Rebar stability #
• Granular platform design #
• Thrust blocks
• Plunge column design
– interaction with pile, embedment, effective length
• Are drop head props effectively pre-stressed back props
– what happens when a back-propping load comes onto them
• Real effect of geogrid in pile platforms
• Effect of vehicle loads on buried services
• Management practice
– how the requirements for good communication, co-operation, co-ordination and competency are
achieved; training and qualification
• Errors in construction; workmanship and tolerance
# PhD Students being taken on now at City, University of London
BIM and the TWf
BIM Event
Challenges (17th April 2015)
• Developing a common consensus for temporary works
1. Uniclass Classification (for temporary works) (‘Designer side’)
• Establish a link with the NBS to establish a framework (Develop a common language)
• Lists of objects, items - a library
2. AD4 Asset data dictionary - Meta-data for data drops (‘Contractor side’)
• Base on a Crossrail template? Establish a table of what is needed for temporary works.
• Know the information you need to hand over.
3. Model level of detail (‘CAD side’ – someone who understands models)
• Develop a Standard; perhaps based upon a Bechtel template?
4. Temporary Works EIRs (Employer's information Requirements) (‘Client side’)
• Need to write; use a Crossrail template?
Digital collaboration day
https://www.twforum.org.uk/media/105769/tw18.016_digital_collaboration_day_29_
11_2017_final_low_res.pdf
There was a consensus (29th November 2017) that the TWf needs to agree:
• Staging responsibilities for temporary works design, supply chain and construction main contractors and
sub-contractors, e.g. RIBA digital overlay
• Establish key attributes needed for temporary works BIM objects
• Minimum standards for each to engage meaningfully
• Early recognition of impact of temporary works on the success of project and the complexity/risks, to
allow effective management
• Agreement of key roles and responsibilities to satisfy BS 5975 , CDM2015 , PAS 1192 , etc.
Concerns were particularly raised over:
• the variety of software packages being used; and
• the difficulty the supply chain had in complying with each project’s requirements and adopting the various
software packages.
Teaching undergraduates the skills required was a major issue
• as was the need for TWf to engage with the BIM community
