Nursing ethics for nursing professionals

Editor's Notes

  • #9 IN EARLIER DAYS SKILLS LIKE BRAVERY ND COURAGE were considered to be principle qualities e.g. Mesopotamian epic of gilgamesh, islandic eddas define ethics as not obeying moral values but developing and framing themselves. then some Greek philosopher like Socrates ,plato , aristottle define ethics as a person having good ethical sense achieves,” internal harmony “of the parts of the soul whereas doing evil things damage the soul.so honesty, truth and justice are considered good thing.BIBLICAL ETHICS:ten commandmentsNATURAL LAW AND ETHICS:In the middle ages a catholic philosopher Thomas said ethical principles followed in the human life are determined by the natural behavior of the humans KANTIAN ETHICS:according to Immanuel kant moral values are achieved through the principle of universality .it must be your sense of duty to accomplish right things.UTILITARIAN ETHICS: some philosophers for 20th centuary explain that moral values can be achieved through right action which leas to great happiness and it increase the joy in human life.20TH CENTURY : meta ethics  Consequentialism they think right activity with good intention leads to good for others a persons actions are judged based on consequences and outcomes of given act • . Deontology • they speak about obeying and following rules doing the duty rightly and being bounded by moral obligations 16. Utilitarianism • Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that determines right from wrong by focusing on outcomes. It is a form of consequentialism. 16 18. Ethical egoism • Ethical egoism is the normative ethical position that moral agents ought to act in their own self- interest. Virtue school of ethics: according to it if an individuals thoughts, ideas, and views are ethically good then his/her actions will also be good so character building is important.
  • #11 Metaethics, it was introduced by G. E Moore in 1903in his book principia ethica, , by the 20th century metaethics were start gaining more popularity than normative ethics. In 1971 John Rawls published, A Theory of justice, it created a renewed interest inn normative ethics
  • #21 The code makes it clear that inherent in nursing is respect for human rights including the right to life, to dignity and to be treated with respect. Nursing care is unrestricted by consideration of age, color, creed, culture, disability or illness, nationality, politics, race or social status.
  • #23  The PNC Code of Conduct is a product of Deontological ethics – it guides action based on a set of principles/duties.
