Artificial Intelligence is questioning business models in all industries. It is opening promising new avenues for the future of the design, building and operations of buildings and mobility infrastructure. AI is also at the very heart of smart city and raises new issues in the governance of territories.
This document discusses transforming Greenwich's economy through a smart city strategy. It argues that radical innovation is needed to create new wealth in difficult economic times. The strategy proposes making Greenwich a digital growth cluster by promoting skills and jobs in areas like urban design, autonomous vehicles, and telehealth. This would involve transforming infrastructure, public services, neighborhoods, and the built environment through approaches like open data platforms, living labs, and digital technologies. The goal is to retain local graduates and make Greenwich more competitive globally through world-class connectivity and by becoming a predictive city capable of solving problems and anticipating issues.
The document provides an overview of digitalization, automation, and the three primary technologies enabling job automation: artificial intelligence, machine learning, and robotics. It defines key terms like digitalization and discusses the history and development of digitalization. The overview aims to establish an understanding of these concepts before assessing their potential to substitute human labor.
1. The document discusses Cisco's Connected Workplace concept which aims to improve collaboration and flexibility in the workplace by providing a variety of shared workspaces for teams and individuals.
2. It also discusses the concept of Smart Work Centers which bring flexible workspaces and services closer to where people live in order to reduce physical traffic and allow work to be done remotely.

Thanks to the Internet of Things (IoT), physical assets are turning into participants in real-time global digital markets. The countless types of assets around us will become as easily indexed, searched and traded as any online commodity. While some industries will be tougher to transform than others – those with physical limitations, such as manufacturing, will be harder to digitize – untold economic opportunities exist for growth and advancement. Our research shows this will create a new “Economy of Things” with significant consequences. Here, we explore this transformation, including what could happen to industry profit pools, as well as the likely impacts on existing players in different industries.

Big data and digital ecosystem mark skilton jan 2014 v1Mark Skilton
The convergence of data and technology in business has created a range of digital experiences that are revolutionizing all industries and organization.
This is not just a “top and tail” exercise of innovation and development resulting in quick fixes for parts of your organization to launch marketing services on a mobile device or data analysis but needs to be taken into a serious framework for your operating strategy that drives all touch points in the front and back of your organization. Often “technoconfusion” is created or even encouraged with lots of technologies and integration layers which result in a piecemeal digital strategy for business performance and an ineffective business case and governance process. Often the results are seen in lack of data visibility, increasing costs of platform integration and complex services and contractual issues limiting longer term choice.
The realities of the digital world are more subtle and expansive in 2014 and beyond; the old style of layers of technology is giving way to a new era of digital modularity of systems and devices that enable generative business growth effects from self-service and massive scaled social and marketplace services. This is born out with the exponential scaling of open APIs, massive data and social networking and the growth of a range of internet enabled modular devices and cloud enabled platforms.

IBM provides a 20 slide presentation summarizing its business. The summary is:
IBM has transformed itself into a cognitive solutions and cloud computing company through investments in Watson and IBM Cloud. It provides cognitive capabilities and cloud platforms to help organizations across industries digitally transform and make better data-driven decisions. IBM remains a global leader in areas like AI, cloud, security and blockchain through continued innovation in its products, services and research.
IBM's Watson demonstrated early contextual computing capabilities by connecting information it had learned to draw context from the data and increase the available information 10-fold, despite having no internet access. Contextual computing replicates how humans understand complex scenarios by considering multiple perspectives and influences. The rise of smart devices that aggregate personal data provides an opportunity to apply individual context more broadly. Contextual computing will be important for enterprises to make sense of large and complex data in a similar holistic manner.
The document discusses 8 major technology trends for 2008: 1) Cloud computing which provides computing resources as an internet-based service, 2) lightweight integration using REST, mashups and widgets, 3) enterprise intelligence at scale using internet-scale analytics on large datasets, 4) continuous access to information through mobile devices, 5) social computing through social networks and user collaboration, 6) the explosion of user-generated content, 7) industrialization of software development through tools and processes, and 8) green computing to reduce energy usage. The role of IT is shifting from standardization and control to empowering users through these new technologies.

As companies undergo digital transformation, they evolve into being more of a software and app driven business because they can connect people, things and businesses together with the latest technology available to them.
According to Gartner Research, bimodal is the practice of managing two separate but coherent styles of work: one focused on predictability; the other on exploration. Mode 1 is optimized for areas that are more predictable and well-understood. It focuses on exploiting what is known, while renovating the legacy environment into a state that is fit for a digital world. Mode 2 is exploratory, experimenting to solve new problems and optimized for areas of uncertainty. These initiatives often begin with a hypothesis that is tested and adapted during a process involving short iterations, potentially adopting a minimum viable product (MVP) approach. Both modes are essential to create substantial value and drive significant organizational change, and neither is static. Marrying a more predictable evolution of products and technologies (Mode 1) with the new and innovative (Mode 2) is the essence of an enterprise bimodal capability. Both play an essential role in the digital transformation.
