This year, New Piney Grove will focus on different aspects of worship each month, starting with "Vain Worship." The document discusses how worship must be "in spirit and in truth" to be acceptable to God. Vain worship produces no spiritual fruit because it is hypocritical, stemming from hearts that are far from God Monday through Saturday. Vain worship is defined as being about pride, priorities, and pretense rather than a repented heart, and does not depend on acts, prayers, or feelings. The document encourages avoiding vain worship.

This is a sample presentation for an online Christian youth ministry. It is the first lesson on the goal for studying the Bible taken from 1 Timothy 1:5. It is a work in progress, so the narration only goes through slide five.
If what we call love doesn’t take us beyond ourselves, it is not really love. If we have the idea that love is characterized as cautious, wise, sensible, shrewd, and never taken to extremes, we have missed the true meaning. This may describe affection and it may bring us a warm feeling, but it is not a true and accurate description of love.
If you are like the casual worshipper who selfishly expects something out of worshipping the Lord or like the self-righteous who spends more time examining others rather than focusing on the Lord themselves...this lesson is for you.

In Jude 17-23 Jude shifts from piling up examples of false teachers from the Old Testament to a series of practical exhortations that flow from apostolic instruction. He preserves for us what may well have been part of the apostolic catechism for the first generation of Christ-followers. In these instructions Jude exhorts the believer to deal with 3 different groups of people: scoffers who are "devoid of the Spirit", believers who have come under the influence of scoffers and believers who are so entrenched in false teaching that they need rescue and pose some real spiritual risk for the rescuer. In all of this Jude emphasizes Jesus' call to rescue straying sheep, leaving the 99 safely behind and pursuing the 1.
Homily: The Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity Sunday 2024.docxJames Knipper
Countless volumes have been written trying to explain the mystery of three persons in one true God, leaving us to resort to metaphors such as the three-leaf clover to try to comprehend the Divinity. Many of us grew up with the quintessential pyramidal Trinity structure of God at the top and Son and Spirit in opposite corners. But what if we looked at this ‘mystery’ from a different perspective? What if we shifted our language of God as a being towards the concept of God as love? What if we focused more on the relationship within the Trinity versus the persons of the Trinity? What if stopped looking at God as a noun…and instead considered God as a verb? Check it out…

2. This year will be devoted to understanding
and learning more about worship. We will
have a different focus each month, but the
main emphasis will be learning how God
wants us to worship Him. This month our
focus will be “Vain Worship.” The Bible is
clear in what type of worship is acceptable
to God. Our efforts to worship God in ways
which are not “in spirit and in truth” are
vain. It other words, it has no spiritual
value and is therefore useless.
3. The biblical word “vain” (matēn) means
fruitless. It is also translated as
groundless, pointless and even can be
rendered as deceitful. Despite our
prayers, preaching or singing, worship is
pointless for those whose hearts are far
from God. Their actions Monday through
Saturday, do not line up with their
participation on Sunday. Therefore, what
we offer to God in worship is hypocritical
and does not and cannot produce fruit.
4. VAIN WORSHIP IS
• Not About acts of sin; God desires a
repented heart and a broken spirit
• Not about how well you pray
• Not about how you feel
• It is about your pride
• It is about your priority
• It is about your pretense
