This document provides guidance for noticing key elements in stories that help the reader understand themes, conflicts, and foreshadowing. It outlines six things for the reader to be aware of: contrasts and contradictions in a character's actions; repeated words, phrases, objects or situations; memory moments interrupting the narrative; aha moments of character realization; words of advice from wiser characters; and tough questions asked by characters. For each, the reader is prompted to ask a question to gain insight into the plot or themes.
