Additionally, while hearing aids can help with communication, they do not resolve all problems. The document also dispels the myths that hearing aids damage residual hearing or that smaller size necessarily means better technology. It encourages readers to learn about hearing aid options to separate myths from facts.
Over the summer of 2015, the Vocera Experience Innovation Network launched a study to identify ways healthcare leaders in the United States and Canada are improving quality, safety, and increasing efficiency while also enhancing patient, family and staff experience.
More than 100 senior level healthcare executives completed an online survey or participated in one-on-one qualitative interviews to provide insight into their organization's strategic initiatives, emerging best practices, and operational infrastructures designed to drive improvement. Survey and interview findings outlined in this presentation reveal gaps in communication, infrastructure, and stakeholder engagement as many hospitals and health systems still struggle to align quality, safety and experience strategies.

The document discusses the power and use of checklists. It notes that checklists are used in various fields like surgery and aviation to prevent errors and ensure important steps are not skipped. The author began using checklists after reading about their effectiveness in the book The Checklist Manifesto. The document provides examples of different types of checklists the author uses for usability testing and collaboration meetings. It outlines characteristics of good checklists, noting they should be precise, efficient, and to the point without spelling out every step. However, checklists cannot force people to follow them. Swimming from the shallows to the deep endNHS England
The document discusses several topics related to flexible working in the NHS:
1) It summarizes that when the NHS was established in 1948, it faced immediate staff shortages, with over 53,000 hospital beds lying empty due to a lack of nursing staff. Despite efforts to increase staffing levels, shortages of around 48,000 nurses remained.
2) It notes that millennials prefer more flexible work arrangements than staying in the same job for 30 years.
3) It describes NHSP's process for evaluating the performance of flexible workers, which includes seeking feedback from Trusts across five quality criteria and identifying workers performing well or in need of skills development.
Checklists are used in many fields like healthcare and aviation to prevent errors and ensure important steps are not skipped. The presenter started using checklists after reading "The Checklist Manifesto" which describes how checklists have saved lives. Good checklists are precise, efficient, and to the point without trying to spell out every step. They remind users of critical steps. Checklists have their limits but can help experts remember complex processes and prompt better functioning. The presenter provides examples of checklists they have created and used for usability testing and collaboration meetings.
The dementia friendly primary care ‘iSPACE’ project was introduced into GP practices across Wessex as an innovative, cost-effective solution to enhance services in primary care
for people with dementia.
During the past three years (2014-17), the project team publicised this project throughout the Wessex region, and at the time of writing this report, 50% have completed the steps to become dementia friendly:
- Over 150 surgeries are dementia friendly
- Nearly 3,000 (2,969) surgery staff have received dementia training at the tier one (awareness level)
stage, and a further 244 people have received talks about dementia and the project
- This means the project is impacting over 15,000 people living with dementia across surgeries, which are collectively caring for over 1.4 million people
- Dorset, NE Hants and West Hants CCG are aiming at 100% dementia friendly surgery status – currently they stand at 56%, 70% and 46% respectively
Broadly speaking, the iSPACE work has led to:
• Fewer A&E admissions for patients with dementia
• More patients with personalised care plans
• Fewer appointments needed with GPs, which has freed-up appointments for other patients
This report summarises the project, what it found, how iSPACE improves lives for patients and their carer.s

Notes on iSPACE Implementation: and what the AHSN can do to help.
1. How to implement the dementia friendly GP
surgery iSPACE model
Notes to accompany the web resources, brochure and flyer
These notes accompany the brochure which describes the steps needed to make a surgery more
dementia friendly. Included with these notes are resources that other surgeries have created which
may help to streamline the process. All resources can be found on the Wessex AHSN website, see
below.
If you are considering implementing a dementia friendly surgery and need guidance these notes can
help guide you through the process.
iSPACE is straightforward to implement and has been easily undertaken by the 155 surgeries that
have already done this
How to implement this model?
Experience from the surgeries where this has been implemented recommend:
identification of a dementia champion or two – clinical and non clinical
staff training
involvement of patients and their carers in the process
Please go to the website for more information www.wessexahsn.org/ispace
The audit toolkit lists the actions to become more dementia friendly. The process takes about two
months to complete and involves clinical and non clinical staff.
In each CCG in Wessex many surgeries have completed the steps and there are champions in each
surgery who can be contacted for guidance. The CCG dementia lead has the list of surgeries and
contact details for the champions.
