Chromosomes carry DNA and are made up of genes. In humans, body cells contain 46 chromosomes that come in 23 pairs, with one chromosome of each pair coming from the male parent and the other from the female parent. Homologous chromosome pairs are similar in size, shape, and genes. Sex cells such as eggs and sperm contain only 23 chromosomes each as a result of meiosis, which reduces the number of chromosomes in sex cells.
