2. Definition :
Visualization of specific DNA, RNA & Protein among many thousands
contaminating molecule requires the combination of number of
techniques which are collectively termed as BLOT transfer.
There are three type of blotting technique
oNorthern blotting
oSouthern blotting
oWestern blotting
Northern blotting is a technique for detection of specific RNA
sequence

Application: The technique has been used to show over
expression of onco-genes and down regulation of tumor-
suppressor genes in cancerous cells when compared to 'normal'
tissue.
Advantage : Northern blots is that thousands of genes can be
visualized at a time, while northern blotting is usually looking at
one or a small number of genes.
Disadvantage: A problem in northern blotting is often sample
degradation by RNases (both endogenous to the sample and
through environmental contamination), which can be avoided by
proper sterilization of glassware and the use of RNase inhibitors
