No Country For Old Men Essay
1. No Country For Old Men Essay
Writing an essay on the topic "No Country for Old Men" can be a challenging task, given the
complexity and depth of the subject matter. The novel, written by Cormac McCarthy, delves into
intricate themes such as morality, fate, and the changing landscape of the American West.
Crafting an essay that captures the essence of these themes requires a profound understanding of
the novel and an ability to analyze and interpret its nuances.
One of the challenges lies in navigating the intricate plot and character development. The novel
presents a unique narrative structure, and unraveling the layers of meaning can be both
intellectually demanding and rewarding. Additionally, addressing the moral ambiguity within the
story, as well as the philosophical questions it raises, adds another layer of complexity to the
essay.
Moreover, exploring the symbolism and allegorical elements in "No Country for Old Men"
demands a keen eye for detail and a thorough understanding of literary devices. Analyzing how
McCarthy uses language, imagery, and symbolism to convey deeper meanings requires a high
level of literary analysis skills.
Furthermore, discussing the film adaptation, directed by Joel and Ethan Coen, and comparing it
with the original text introduces another dimension to the essay. This requires a comprehensive
understanding of cinematic techniques and the ability to draw meaningful connections between
the two mediums.
In conclusion, writing an essay on "No Country for Old Men" requires not only a solid grasp of
the novel's intricate details but also the analytical skills to dissect its themes, characters, and
symbolism. It's a task that demands intellectual rigor and a nuanced approach to literature.

3. Essay on the Devil in Paradise Lost, Holy Bible, Faust,...
The Devil s Role in Paradise Lost, The Bible, Faust, and The Devil and Tom Walker
The devil s role as the inspiration for rock and roll is already well documented and
commonly understood. Perhaps less well documented is the role of the Devil as
inspiration for literature. The Devil has played an active role in literature for quite a
while with his name appearing in stories for centuries.
The historical devil has not always been personified. Initially, in religious settings, he
was represented as a feeling or power, in attendance as the force of evil, an antagonist
to goodness and divinity, and temptation for humans. Although not always
represented as human, he has always been represented. In fact, demonstrating that he

No longer just a religious being, under the direction of artists, the devil assumed the
shape of a fleshed out character.4 Representations of the devil changed first from
feared supernatural force to a god of grace, 5 and next to a prankster and satirist6
and, at worst, a monster in appearance. With this final development, the devil was
almost ready for the Charlie Daniels Band, but first he had to be fine tuned.
The first important literary work in the devil s modern development was Milton s
Paradise Lost. Although the devil s battle takes place in his earliest arena, Heaven, he
is somewhat anthropomorphic, suspiciously human in anatomy but also bearing
wings, horns, and hooves. Next was Goethe s Faust, whose title character is tempted
by an under demon, Mephistopheles, to whom he submits. Later, just as his contract
with the devil is about to run out, Faust turns to God to escape damnation and repents.
Although it had drawn from Theophilus, a medieval text, Faustus originality lies in
its non biblical plot (unlike Paradise Lost).7 The devil had taken a new form in
literature and other storytellers took to this incarnation.
By characterizing the devil as a person (most commonly a man), authors endowed
him with significant qualities signifying qualities, really, many of which are recycled
in The Devil Went Down to Georgia. The devil is frequently wealthy, a sharp
4. Little Polish Boy Stand With His Arms Up Thesis
The Nazis inflicted pain upon millions of innocent lives and dehumanized each
person they had captured. Weather it is the horrors the Nazis got away with or the
courage and aspiration the Jews still help inside themselves, Holocaust books have
thrived in the world of literature. Two moving pieces, Devil s Arithmetic and To the
Little Polish Boy Standing With His Arms Up , have captured the paroxysm of the
Holocaust. Jane Yolen, the author of Devil s Arithmetic, composed a novel
transporting the reader into a death camp and its monstrosities. She constructed her
epilogue with a tone of pure honesty, innocence, and desperation in an effort to
persuade us to believe and accept what happened in the past, and through this support
the Jews. Jane Yolen has used her strong personal... Show more content on

Peter L. Fischl, writer of To the Little Polish Boy Standing With His Hands Up
introduces a young boy calmly and bravely facing his death as the Nazis point their
terrorizing guns. He has a similar tone of acceptance of the truth and prevention of
another major event like this. He uses figurative language, anger, repetition, and
capitalization to intrigue the reader and guide them into the deeper meaning he has
hidden in his strong purpose.
A poem is such a powerful piece of art, for it is so open to interpretation. Fischl has
constructed a piece so complex one could just brim the surface of the thoughts
potentially influenced by this poem. The poem constantly repeats but each interval
pulls you deeper into the large vat of anger, calm, disgust, and regret. Peter L.
Fischl opens with a simple stanza. I would like to be an artist So I could make a

5. Trigger Finger Case Study
Overview
Trigger finger, sometimes called trigger thumb, is a condition that locks a person s
finger into a bent position. Sometimes the finger will then snap straight out, similar to
the way a trigger is pulled and released. It happens when inflammation causes the
space around the sheath that protects the tendon to narrow. In severe cases, the finger
cannot be straightened out.
The irritation and inflammation associated with trigger finger disrupts the normal
gliding motion of the tendon as it moves through the sheath. This interference
contributes to the trademark bent position of an affected finger. If the tendon sheath
remains irritated for an extended period of time, it can lead to thickening, scarring,
and bumps that further impede
6. Explain Why Did Tsar Nicholas II Face Problems From
1906...
Why did Tsar Nicholas II continue to face problems from 1906 to 1914?
After the 1905 Revolution, the Tsar got a little taste of what was to come if he did
not change the way the country functioned. However too little was done too late and
after war was declared and Stolypin s assassination it was almost certain that there
would be no more tsarist regime.
Nicholas II promised in the October Manifesto that a duma may be set up, so he
can get some liberal support. This was the first time the Tsar has tried at a
democratic government. However what displeased the people is what the Tsar had
done in April 1906. He passed on the Fundamental Laws which basically allowed him
to overrule any decision of the Duma and that he would keep most of his autocratic
power. It seemed that nothing has changed after the 1905 Revolution. The first ...

Many historians believe that if there was no World War I, Stolypin would be able to
save Russia by resolving the peasant s discontent. As the peasants had no land of
their own and the Mir was creating major problems, the peasants were quite angry.
Also they made up most of the population, which showed that they must be taken
seriously or they could do major damage to the country. Stolypin gave the peasants
the power to choose to leave the Mirs and join Kulaks freely. Because of this there
were some successes; record harvests in 1913 and production was increasing
however it depended on the region. The problem was that Stolypin was
assassinated and nobody was there to continue his reforms. However there were
many peasants that were left without anything and they were forced to go to towns
and look for work. This new class of peasants were dangerous as they were easy
targets for radicalism. Also most of the land still was owned by the high class and
not a lot has changed. The peasants in Russia were not pleased as
8. Essay Napoleon Bonaparte
Napoleon was born on August 15th, 1769 in Ajaccio (Capital of Corsica) which is an
island 70 miles west of Italy. His parents were Carlo Bonaparte and Letizia Ramolino.
They got married when Carlo was 18 and Letizia was 14, this was in 1764. Letizia
was the one who was always putting food on the table, Carlowas way to lazy. His
father was interested in politics.
Napoleon got sent to military school (Brienne Military Academy) in 1778. He hated
it; his peers were constantly making fun of him. They mostly made fun of him for
being a Corsican; this would make him love his homeland more. Because of the
young men constantly making fun of him he would get very angry and his anger ...

His mother still looked at him the same and, still, frequently whipped him when he
misbehaved. In 1788, when he was supposed to be sent to return to duty he
actually got sent to the Artillery Training School at Auxonne. During that year he
learned all he needed to know about cannons. The more he learned about them, the
more he liked them. He called them Engines of Death which protected the brave
soldiers. He studied many books about war, geology, and other subjects. His
favorite book was the Social Contract written in 1762 by Jean Jacques Rousseau.
Because of this book he hoped for a constitution limiting the kings power and
guaranteeing people rights. Which is ironic because Napoleon would later be a
dictator and the book is based on aristocracies and democracies.
At the end of the eighteenth century the French revolution had spread chaos across
France. Lazy King Louis XVI did little to help France. It is said that his favorite
pastimes were hunting, where he killed 1,274 deer and 189,251 smaller animal,
this would take a lot of time doing. His other favorite pastime was rolling pellets of
dirt from between his toes and flicking them at anyone who came in his range. He
spent France s money on his personal luxuries. His wife and daughter were the same
way. They were always buying expensive jewelry and expensive dresses. Nobles were
also treated very well. That is the reason why 21 million
9. The Theme of Control in Shakespeare s Othello Essay
The Theme of Control in Othello
Throughout history, powerful empires with boundless control have had a tendency to
fall victim to corruption. It is common knowledge, among political scientists and
historians, that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. William
Shakespeare s Othello, the Moor of Venice (reprinted in Laurence Perrine and
Thomas R. Arp, Literature: Structure, Sound, and Sense, 6th ed. [Fort Worth:
Harcourt, 1993] 1060 1147) contains several themes, but one theme in particular
supports the truth of this knowledge. In Othello, the Moor of Venice, the theme of
control is one that causes corruption. Othello s control is stolen by Iago and, Iago s

Othello speaks of their love in Act I, Scene 3: She loved me for the dangers I had
passed, And I loved her that she did pity them (1.3.166 67). Othello believes in his
wife s loyalty. All in all, Othello is in complete control at the beginning of the play,
but this will change dramatically.
Iago is often regarded as Shakepeare s most consummate villain. This is
understandable; it is hard to imagine a villain capable of matching the combination
of diabolical nature and supreme skill that Iago uses to systematically take control.
Iago s first attempt to gain control is a retaliation against Othello s promotional
decision. When Michael Cassio is chosen for the position of lieutenant, Iago
becomes furious and tries to place Othello in danger; he informs Brabantio of
Othello s elopement with Desdemona in a very clever way: Zounds, sir, you re
robbed. For shame, put on your gown, Your heart is burst, you have lost half your
soul. Even now, now, very now, an old black ram is tupping your white ewe
(1.1.86 89). Iago uses sexual imagery to fuel Brabantio s anger. This extra anger,
caused by Iago, has potential of harming Othello. When this evil scheme fails, Iago
results to a new plan. In Act II, Scene 1, Iago convinces Roderigo that Desdemona
actually loves Cassio, and persuades
10. Physician Assisted Suicide And Its Impact On Society
To better understand physician assisted suicide, it is important to consider its history
in our society. Euthanasia can be traced back to the Ancient Greeks, however by the
thirteenth century Christians, as well as Jews, opposed the practice due to religious
beliefs. The earliest United States law prohibiting assisted suicidewas passed in New
York in 1828. During World War II, Hitler organized mercy killing of the sick or
disabled; often referred to as, Aktion T4 this program was enacted for disabled
children under the age of three. A Catholic Bishop called the practice of Euthanasia
murder; as a result Hitler publicly ended the program, despite it continuing in private.
Instead of using euthanasia by way of gas chambers, the use of drugs and/or
starvation became the new way to euthanize citizens without causing attention to
themselves. (The History Place 1997) The majoring of United States citizens were
against the practice for the main reason being religion; however, looking ahead to the
year 1972, euthanasia became a more widely accepted act, The US Senate Special
Commission on Aging (SCA) holds the first national hearing on death with dignity
entitled Death with Dignity: An inquiry into Related Public Issues. The national
hearing showed that Americans were becoming more accepting of the act of assisted
suicide, yet less accepting of expecting a miracle while witnessing the suffering of
loved ones. (Samuelson)

It is ethical to compensate organ donors. There are many reasons for supporting
compensation for organ donors however; the main one is the number of organ donors
will increase, which will save more than thousands of people. NOTA section 301

exchanges, such as those between patient buyers, donor sellers, and profiteering
middlemen. The current view in compensating donors is not paying them the money
for their organon the spot, but by other helpful, resourceful compensations. Currently,
there are still a great deal of patients on the waiting list that are dying and in
desperate need of major transplants like heart, kidneyand even liver. The activists

13. Betrayal Exposed in Vietnam Perkasie, By Ehrhart Essay
The Vietnam War was a controversial conflict that plagued the United States for
many years. The loss of life caused by the war was devastating. For those who came
back alive, their lives were profoundly changed. The impact the war had on
servicemen would affect them for the rest of their lives; each soldier may have only
played one small part in the war, but the war played a huge part in their lives. They
went in feeling one way, and came home feeling completely different. In the book
VietnamPerkasie, W.D. Ehrhart describes his change from a proud young American
Marine to a man filled with immense confusion, anger, and guilt over the atrocities he
witnessed and participated in during the war.

Ehrhart thought what more noble a cause can a man die for, than to die in defense of
freedom (Ehrhart, 9). He wanted to help his country and help the rid Vietnam of the
growing communist regime.
When he first arrived in Vietnam, Ehrhart was solicitous to see combat. He would
prefer combat over the monotonous routine he was restricted to on the Marine
compound. Life in war was completely unlike anything he experienced before, but
he became accustomed to it. Even after being there, he felt he was fighting for a
good cause. He detested the hippies back home who abhorrently demonstrated
against the war. He would angrily exclaim, We re over here getting our asses shot off
defending them, and what do we get for it? Goddamn traitors (Ehrhart, 54). He felt
the Americans were truly helping the Vietnamese people and could not understand
why anyone would be opposed to such a cause.
Though he was proud to be a Marine, he soon began witnessing morally heinous
acts by his peers. His first introduction to the brutality that was occurring in
Vietnam were small instances of civilians being beaten or kicked around. He
regularly saw civilians brutally tied up and tossed around as if they were mere
possessions and not human beings. His fellow Marines would kick and beat these
people, and he saw no good reason for these actions. He quickly learned he was
supposed to remain reticent about these

In the world of technology communication has become easier than ever. The world
has now shrunk from a vast populated land to a network of communicating
individuals living in a global village. People from all over the globe have come
closer together and distances have decreased to the extent that an individual is merely
a click away.
In this ever growing network of people a new theory has emerged, the idea of 6
degrees of separation. The idea behind this is that between you and any another
person in the world is only a chain no longer than six people. This emphasizes the
significance of online communication and the way it has made the world a whole lot
smaller.
This is the power of social media and the developments in online communication. A
happening in one part of the world reaches to the second part in a matter of seconds.
Imagine if that news or happening was about you. The significance of this
technology is the ease it provides. Using this tool to your advantage can give you a
large number of benefits.
Social Media Marketing brings global fame to your name.
This is your ticket to international level fame. Your company or your name could be
known throughout the globe with millions of followers and fans. Millions of
people can access these sites where people come to communicate online and
express their views. Once you step into the world of the social media marketing all
of these people become your potential prospects. Your services are merely a single

15. The Mystery Of Vampire Legend
Vampire legend is one that has frightened and fascinated people across the world for
generations. The concept of a being that lurks through the night pouncing on
unknowing suspects searching for blood is just as popular today as it was centuries
ago. While cultures all across the globe have different variations on the vampire
folklore, they all share one thing in common, the need for blood. Bram Stoker s
Dracula was originally published in 1897 and from then on, the main character set the
paradigm for the fictional vampires to follow. Vampire fiction continues progressing
and bewitching readers despite the stories being taken from an expansive folkloric
and literary past. A complicated kind of figure and possibly a portrayal of both erotic
anxiety and corrupt desire, the literary vampire is one of the most powerful
archetypes bequeathed to us from the imagination of the nineteenth century (Gordon
and Hollinger). It seems that as times and cultures change that each age embraces the
vampire it needs (Gordon and Hollinger). Before the 1970 s, the quintessential
vampire was Bram Stoker s Dracula; the mesmerizing cultured, yet sinister Eastern
European Count. Since then, resulting from multiple publications, including Anne
Rice s Vampire Chronicles and Stephanie Meyer s Twilight, the depiction of a
vampire has changed, because of the ongoing transformations in the broader cultural
and political mise en scene (Gordon Hollinger). It has been mainly through cultural

The landscape of New England was covered by a massive ice sheet called the
Laurentide glacial sheet extending all the way down to New York. The physical
footprint of this ice flow left prehistoric fossils embedded in the soil throughout New
England. As the sheet receded, it left a trail of debris which scraped the land forming
mountain bluffs, rivers, lakes and ponds. Such areas like Springfield, Hadley,
Amherst, and Sunderland were later communities that developed after Lake

every season providing annual diet varieties throughout the year. The incorporation of
hunter gatherer and agricultural society for the natives proved to benefit communities

The two sources I used in the last research summary were scientific resources because
my topic has a scientific background. Both of them provided information on the
history of the topic and went into great detail on facts about spaying and neutering.

spaying and neutering. In the first one, The History of Spaying and Neutering
Animals it provided a few statistics about the overpopulation of pets, such as there
were 300,000 homeless pets. In the other article, Pediatric Spay/Neuter, it specifically
talked about spaying and neutering animals while they re extremely young. Although
both of the articles were on the same topic, they shed light on spaying and neutering
as a whole with specific topics in between. Now that I researched the history of

In both of the articles, Spaying Your Female DogPros and Cons and Neutering Your

neutering is that it increases the risk of hemangiosarcoma, which is a deadly form
of cancer. This type of cancer attacks the heart and spleen in the animal s body. In
other words, while some types of cancer are prevented, some may come up. Also, it
can cause hypothyroidism because it affects the endocrine system. Although it can
be treated by medication, it still stressful for the dog and owner. Of course all
surgeries are potentially dangerous and complications can pop up at any time. There
could be internal bleeding, a bad reaction to the medicine given before or after
surgery, inflammation, etc. In both spaying and neutering, the procedure has to be
done at the perfect time, not too early and not too late, or it could cause hip dysplasia
and bone
19. Totalitarianism In 1984 And 1984
The Party control the discourse, it seems vital to maintaining totalitarianism. In his
work on understanding Orwell, James A. Tyner states, Complete discipline proceeds
from... control of thought. (Tyner, Vol. 5, No. 1, March 2004) When the political
party begins to control the minds of the people, they control their lives. There really
is no personal space or personal time in Orwellian dystopia. All the time or space is
owned by the government. Even the thoughts of a person are monitored by the
telescreens and so are the expressions of the people. This helps The Party constantly
track what each person is thinking and if they suspect the person is committing
thought crime, then these people are immediately arrested and tortured and
eventually brainwashed into mechanically being unquestioning followers of the Big
Brother. The events in the novel take place in the year 1984. But Winston dreams of
the future and sometimes he tries to remember his past. At these points the temporal
continuity is affected in the novel. The film follows the novel closely. The actions for

They constantly surveille everyone and anyone who is believed to live otherwise is

idea that when you control the minds of the people, you control their entire lives,
you control the civilization. In the novel Siddhartha, by Herman Hesse we see that it
falls into three thematic parts; Siddhartha s life at home, among the Samanas and
Buddha and finally his life with Kamala and after leaving her with Vasudeva on the

novel. Both temporally and spatially, Siddhartha s search for life and meanings are

21. Cyrano As A Tragic Hero
While many works of fiction portray love through a utopian perspective where true
love is easy to achieve, the story of Cyrano follows a failed quest for intimacy, where
Cyrano s own tragic flaws stop him from achieving the romance he dreams of. It is
these same tragic flaws that help to define Cyrano as a tragic heroin Edmond Rostand
s Cyrano de Bergerac, and it is these same flaws that eventually lead to Cyrano s
tragic fall. However, some of these flaws are also the admirable traits of the large
nosed hero s character that also help to define him as hero. Due to this fact, Cyrano
is able to gain respect from others, but never truly reaches his ultimate goal of having

Along with his lack of self confidence, Cyrano has an incredibly strong sense of
selflessness that causes him to go to outrageous lengths to aid others. While a
respectable trait, his extreme sense of selflessness also forces Cyrano to curb his
emotions for Roxane, creating another mental blockade for Cyrano s non existent
happiness. The combination of all the negative aspects of Cyrano s traits is a key
factor in what eventually lead to Cyrano s tragic fall. Throughout the play, Cyrano
never truly reaches the great height or high esteem to the extent of other tragic
heroes, such as Oedipus and Macbeth, have reached. Nevertheless, Cyrano still
goes through the tragic fall that all tragic heroes must go through, and does so to
quite a dramatic extent. However, Cyrano s tragic flaw is much different from that
of other tragic heroes in that it is stretched over a long period of time, as opposed
to the rather short downfalls of other tragic heroes. Cyrano s tragic fall starts from
Christian s death and ends at Cyrano s own death. When Christian dies, Roxane
begins to mourn for him, but in doing so, she is mourning for the Cyrano s affection
for her, which he hid behind Christian s handsome face. While Cyrano had the
capability of telling Roxane the truth right after Christian s death, he instead chose
not to say a word for fifteen more years. The huge nosed hero s
22. Until the End of Time
Until the End of Time When people are experiencing life they tend to imagine
someone else alongside of them who s there to grow old with them; sometimes
things work out differently, but all and all there is usually someone that people
envision their lives with. In Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley s short story The Mortal
Immortal, the main character Winzy, who was Cornelius Agrippa s pupil, has tried
to win the hand of his beloved Bertha multiple times and has failed just as many.
Bertha and Winzy played a cat and mouse game for a few years; of chasing each
other around and going back and forth of wanting each other, but Winzy s lovefor
Bertha was always strong and true. One obstacle they faced came to fruition when
Bertha was adopted and became a part of a higher social class. Bertha s new found
wealth eventually led to tension between Bertha and Winzy; and also Bertha gets
upset at the fact that Winzy wasn t able to meet her in the woods, because he was
helping Cornelius watch the philter (Shelley 989), which can cure love (989), so
Cornelius could get some sleep. After Cornelius had closed his eyes and Wizny s
brain began to travel; and a spark snapped him back to reality and causing Winzy to
drink Cornelius potion. The potion that Winzy drank was more of a curse the
concoction changed his life forever by making him immortal. Shelley shares how his
immortality has had a drastic effect on himself as well as those close to him; and how
immortality has manipulated his
23. Pathophysiology Of Alcoholism And Addictive Disorders
1.Describe the pathophysiology of alcoholism and addictive disorders.
The pathophysiology of alcoholism begins after alcohol the ingestion of alcohol. It is
absorbed and unaltered through the stomach and intestines. Next it is distributed
throughout the body through the blood and absorbed by all tissues and fluids
(Huether, 2012, p. 72). Furthermore, in the liver the alcohol blood content is
metabolized into acetaldehyde by the enzymes process of alcohol dehydrogenase
(ADH), the microsomal ethanol oxidizing system (MEOS), and catalase (Huether
McCance, 2012). Next, the metabolizing effects the central nervous system (CNS)
and exhibits a depressant action. It is first expressed in the subcortical structures of
the brain. This has an effect of disorientation of motor skills and intellect. With an
increase in blood alcohol concentration, the medullary centers become depressed and
as a result affects respiration (Huether McCance, 2012). In addition, the effects of
alcoholism encourage hepatic and gastric changes. The hepatic effect is caused by
acetaldehyde, in which, induces inflammation, fatty deposits and enlargement of the
liver (Huether McCance, 2012).
2.Discuss the concept of tolerance to alcohol and the diagnostic criteria for alcohol

Individual tolerance vary upon their ability to metabolize alcohol. Genetics has been
proven to influence the metabolic rate of alcohol in the liver. Furthermore, this affects
the metabolism of alcohol depending on

Department
Everyone is entitled to privacy, especially when it comes to law enforcement. To
make the public, and the officers protecting them, feel protected the implementation
of body worn cameras in the police force is occurring. Sometimes, this equipment
malfunctions and ends up doing more harm than the good it promised. When this
occurs, a reevaluation of how the cameras are being used should happen to make sure
improvements occur. As shown by the recent privacy violations to the Round Lake
PoliceDepartment regarding body worn cameras, officers need to become more
familiar with the technology they are using and stricter policies about their usage are
necessary.

Immediately after discovering the recordings, Izzo informed his commander of the
problem which caused a department wide suspension of body camera use. These
recordings violate the department s policy to not record during private times of the
officers (McCoppin). One officer on the force claims to have seen Burch remove the
video in question. This disregards the state law put into place that requires the
recordings to be saved no less than ninety days. Consequently, out of the thirteen
officers within the department, ten are suing over the unauthorized video recordings
and requesting more than $100,000 each in damages due to the violation of their
privacy. Initial training for camera use involves the supplier, WatchGuard, to show
administrators, such as Burch, how to use a feature that deactivates continuous
filming with the cameras. Administrators are then in charge of showing officers how
this works. If this feature is not disabled, the camera will not stop filming
(McCoppin). All these issues together have caused conflict with the Round Lake Park
Police Department and raised questions concerning the use of body worn cameras.
Concerning legal problems, body camera issues over their use and policies are still
unclear. Incidents of police brutality, like those that occurred in Ferguson, MO, have
increased the demand for body worn cameras in

personality deadened and suppressed by years of antagonism. Crooks is the only
black man in the novel. He has a cynical intelligence and a contemptuous demeanor
that he uses to prevent others from inevitably excluding him because of his race.
This sign of intelligence is conveyed when Steinbeck describes Crook s bunkhouse:

think Crooks feels like Lennie has invaded his personal space to insult or bully

skin, yet Candy is lonely because he s not as abled as the other workers. Because
he is handicapped, he cannot do the work that the other men do, so when they go

The Influences of C.G. Jung
Carl Gustav Jung was influenced by literature, symbolism, religion, and the occult
From a very young age. Jung s influencs remained with him as he became a doctor of
medicine and a psychological theorist. The philosophical, the supernatural, the
symbolic, the religious, and the occult all influenced Jung s area of psychological

the field of general psychoanalysis.

writes Not only will Ignorance of the unconscious deprive him of the religious

(Abstracts, 1976, 10:19). Despite Jung s insistence that psychology be empirical and
phenomenological rather than philosophical or metaphysical (Abstracts, 1976, 11.1),
Jung believed that psychologists must take religion into account in the analytic
process as it represents one of the most ancient and universal expressions of the
human mind (Abstracts, 1976, 11.1). Jung s concept of meaningful coincidence is
tied to the spiritual as well. This is evidenced when At certain moments of
heightened spiritual awareness, the archetypal meaning structure that spans the mind
and the world flashes into visibility (Gallo, 1994). Jung even goes so far as to
suggest that religion is an integral aspect of the healing process. In fact, Jung asserts
that many neuroses are never cured unless the religious factor is restored. (Moreno,
1970, p. 79). Jung says that side by side with the decline of religious life, the neuroses
grow noticeably more frequent... (Moreno, 1970, p. 79). Jung explains that
examination of the spiritual side of the patient is recommended as a means of a cure.

Abstract
Testicular cancer in one of the most common cancers in young men between the ages
of 15 and 35, but the disease also occurs in other age groups. All men should be
aware of the signs and symptoms, the causes of the disease, and the treatment.
Compared with other cancers, testicular cancer is rare. Testicular cancer is highly
treatable, even when cancer has spread beyond the testicle. Depending on the type
and stage of testicular cancer, you may receive one of several treatments, or a
combination. Regular testicular self examinations can help identify growths early,
when the chance for successful treatment of testicular cancer is highest.

When a testicle descends normally, it moves from the lower abdomen into the
scrotum. If a testicle does not descend normally, surgery is often performed to
correct the problem. It has even been said that the risk of testicular cancer may by
higher in men infected with HIV, but the evidence is weak. Although the exact
causes of testicular cancer are not known, there are several predisposing factors that
may place some men higher risk. Some of them include past medical history of
undescended testicle, mumps orchitis, or previous testicular cancer on the other
testicle. Frequently, testicular tumors are noted after an episode of trauma; however,
trauma is not believed to be a causative or predisposing factor. Testicular cancer is
not contagious, no one can catch it form another person. Exactly what cause this
disease is unknown and seldom can it be explained why one person gets it while
another does not. Signs and Symptoms Testicular cancer has many signs and

Any enlargement of a testicle
A significant shrinking of a testicle
A change in the consistency of a testicle (hardness)
A feeling of heaviness in the scrotum
A dull ache in the lower abdomen or in the groin
A sudden collection of fluid in the scrotum

30. Jonathan Swift Satire Analysis
omparing Irony
In both Mark Twain and Jonathan Swift s articles there is an effective use of irony.
Irony in satirical writing is normally used for the speaker to convey the opposite
intended meaning to which they are stating; along with antiphrasis, the use of a word
when the opposite meaning is implied, irony makes a valuable asset to satirical
literature. The sarcastic use of irony was input to both readings to express the writer
s disappointment towards their societies teachings during their era s. The use of
antiphrasis and parody go hand in hand with irony, they allow for a clear comparison
between Mark Twain s Advice to Youth and Jonathan Swifts A Modest Proposal.

Twain also targets authorities and didactics as a whole with this speech, by
critiquing the use and effectiveness of them through parody. A Modest Proposal
captures the attention and the trust of the reader by sounding honest and
intellectual. Swift makes it seem as if he is using an academic analysis, comparing
numbers of poverty, working out mathematical equations to depict what poverty
will increase to, and analyzing that there is no better way to work around it except
for the solution he has come up with. A modest proposal uses irony by expressing
the solution of eating babies as something that must happen. Together the sense of
urgency and the hopeful buildup give the readers the perception of an authentic
actuality towards Swift s provided quick fix to the problem at hand. The irony in
Swift s proposal is only found after realizing what the solution provided was, which
left many of the readers in the late 17th century shocked at the mention of
something so vile. I have been assured by a very knowing American of my

The earth formed out of dust and debris 4.57 billion years ago, the sun being

sun was much less bright than it is today. A large planet crashed into earth and the
moon was created. Thankfully, because this crash enabled the earth s axis to give us
seasons! It is thought that either comets are responsible for bringing water to earth,
or at some point, water molecules in space clung to dust and we got rock and water
at the same time. However, bombardment from meteorites stopped around four billion

Chapter 3: Fewer Fish in the Sea
Even with all the technology in the world, fishing boats still operate at baseline. They
are struggling more and more every year to make this difficult (and dangerous) job
worthwhile. Even since the late 19th century, fishermen have complained about
slowly declining hauls. Although it is hard to compare statistics because measuring
methods change, there is a visible, stark difference in (specifically) the catching of
bottom dwelling fish, the leading example. Even though our boats have gotten bigger
and more powerful, fishermen are pulling in less fish than 120 years ago.
Things are so bad in recent years, it s hard to imagine there was ever an abundance.
Now, fishermen are supposed to rely on the year s most recent quarry to know how
many fish they are allowed to catch. In the meantime, things like our trawls change
the scape of the seafloor. There was a temporary ban on trawls under the 1980 s.
We know that extensive exploitation of these smaller fish will lead to a gradual loss
of larger animals (fishing down the food web). Roberts then spends the rest of the

Nature is the universe, with all its phenomena, the elements of the natural world. In
society there are those individuals that have an intense connection with nature.
William Wordsworth, a romanticist, pantheist and transcendentalist believed that the
natural world was an emblem of god or the divine and his poetryoften celebrates the

nature was the essence of freedom.
The module In the Wild deals with humanity s relationship with nature. It shows that

The Solitary Reaper is a description of a melodious sound that is heard in the
atmosphere. Its mood can be described as one of relaxation, depression and
gentleness. The structure, four eight line stanzas, each closing with two couplets and
all written in octosyllabic lines in iambic tetrameter, have a musical lilt. Short lines
deliver the rhymes at a quick pace. Sentences normally need two or more such short
lines to complete, so that few lines are strongly end stopped, diction is conversational
and often lines consist mainly of monosyllabic words.

Wordsworth uses a few literary devices to express his description so the readers

These include hyperboles and the use of rhetorical questions and metaphors. The
use of hyperboles is seen in the sentence Breaking the silence of the seas, among the
farthest Hebrides. It describes the voice of the reaper as one that is so loud, that it
was heard miles away from where it originally began.
The use of metaphors were seen when the poet compares the

The Garden, The Apple and The Fall
The Retelling of The Fall of Man from Paradise in Western Literature Western
literature, particularly that of a religious nature, is replete with references to paradise,
a transcendental reality in which man exists in his ideal state. In the western canon,
the Garden of Eden is ubiquitous with this paradise or heaven. What is the Garden
of Eden? In what ways has man s fall from paradise influenced the mindset and
psyche of modern man? Like many tales in the Bible, the story of man s life in
paradise and his subsequent expulsion, is one that has been retold and modernized
by a multitude of writers and philosophers. Over the course of my independent
reading this semester, I hope to find answers to these questions, as well as gain a
deeper understanding of paradise and redemption within the context of Western
literature. For this reason, I will look at many different perspectives on the fall of
man, sin and paradise by a diverse array of writers.
As with any quest, the honest traveller must begin at the beginning of the trail, so I
will begin by reading John Milton s Paradise Lost as well Dante s Divine Comedy.
Paradise Lost, the classic tale of the Satan s attempt to win back heaven after man s
fall and his loss of grace before the Lord is often considered a pillar of European
literate and is certainly the most influential work of the 17th century. The Divine
Comedy, presents a slightly different perspective and style; its writer,

In order to ascertain if the United Kingdom ( UK ) has an uncontrolled constitution as
the Attorney General states in the case of Jackson v the Attorney General 2005, the
concept of what a constitution is needs first to be considered. Thomas Paine thus put
a constitution is not the act of a government, but of people constituting a government,
and a government without a constitutionis a power without right . A constitution can
be split into categories such as, an unwritten constitution and a written constitution,

38. The Attitude Of The Poem My Last Duchess By Robert
Browning
9th Grade English Essay: Discuss the attitude of the poet towards the duchess in My
Last Duchess by Robert Browning
In the middle ages , the main topic used in poems was a nobleman, usually a knight
in love with a married woman and had to prove his devotion by heroic deeds and
amorous writings . They used blazon to emphasis the beautiful bodies of the women
in those days. However, there was a radical change in the Victorian times where
prostitution became such a big issue. The poems became darker and less courtly. In
the poem, My last duchess by Robert Browning there was no traditional blazon such
as complementing the duchess body. Yet, the speaker who is also the Duke talks
about the women s body as the main justification for her assassination. The duke
talks about her smile as the reason for his jealousy and possessive obecession.
Robert Browning uses various literary devices to provoke a feeling to the reader. By

A lot of people today, mostly microsofties, argue that Microsoft should not be split
up since it isn t really a monopoly; Windows has a lot of competitors out there and
some of the companies that make them are even bigger than Microsoft. And that is
actually quite true: Microsoft has only about 6% of the global software market
and only 3% of the global computer market overall. There are several computer
companies that make more than Microsoft, like Sun Microsystems and Compaq
and there are at least nine other operating systems besides Windows, some of which

Visions and conversions are both a type of religious experience it s a subjective
experience where an individual reports contact with a supernatural reality, an
encounter or union with the divine, Religious experiences are preoccupied by
extraordinary psychological state and no one can give real evidence about it.
According to William James, a 20th century philosopher; every religious experience
has four characteristics. Ineffability, meaning that these experiences can t be
expressed or it is challenging to express them; people often gain an insight or they
learn something from the experience of how to carry on with their life. Transiency,...

An intellectual vision causes the person to become aware of an abstract concept such
as the grace of God a numinous experience. These are often followed by a sense of
inner peace or a call toward religious life.
A conversion experience is one in which the goal is to change one set of beliefs.
This process is called a double action; this is because one must turn away from a
previous lifestyle and turn to a new state of being. The development of conversion
can be a sudden experience or a gradual one and the end result is usually a greater
understanding of faith. People may convert for several reasons; It may be about
years of searching for a spiritual home, or about a moment of inspiration that has
caught them by surprise; sometimes it involves the pain of breaking away from a
previous path, a sense of loneliness and wrestling with doubt. Some may say that a
conversion takes place when one s identity is perceived to be inadequate and so
they move to being in a state when adequacy is met, and the knew life they start is a
holy one. There are four main stages identified which can lead to a conversion
experience; a prior interest in religious questions and other related issues, the
influence of other cases of conversion, a situation which may involve physical and
emotional upset, and the moment of conversion which brings about a radical change
in feeling and outlook of the persons life. There

Critical Challenges Facing African American Men in Pursuit of the Doctoral

earned doctorates exist in the United States (Harper, 2010). Lack of financial
resources, poor academic preparation, absence of relationships with faculty, and
low motivation contribute to the disparity of black males with conferred doctoral
degrees (Proctor, 2009). The percentage of doctoral degrees awarded to African
Americans has steadily increased in the past 30 years. However, African Americans

Harper (2012) connoted that more Black men are beginning to pursue PhD s

is a testament that Black men make conscious decisions and efforts to pursue
postsecondary education (Collins, 2012). Some of the goals of schooling and society
in the United States are to develop students and citizens, who have high aspirations,
believe in their capabilities, are hopeful they can realize their aspirations, and are
optimistic about their future in general. Such characteristics are important because
each leads to overall well being (Bandura, 1977; Scheirer Carver, 1985; Snyder et al.,

a personal sense of urgency which allows them to take control of their life, challenge
themselves, persevere through difficulties, and cope when obstacles arise (McBride,
2012). Why Black Men Pursue The PhD Jamel Parent guidance, direction, and
encouragement provide a strong stimulus for Black men to engage in the pursuit of
the PhD. Harper (2012) asserted that Black men in postsecondary education are
present because parents consistently conveyed non negotiable expectations of
obtaining a higher education degree. Harper (2012) further suggested these parents

reflection of the services provided by the caring staff and volunteers at Ronald
McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Families with severely ill children under the
age of 18, who are undergoing treatment from local hospitals, are grateful for this
temporary home away from home. It was the aspiration of Fred Hill, a
professional football player for the Philadelphia Eagles, to provide a comfortable
place where these families could get a good night s rest and a hot meal while
visiting their hospitalized children. Hill, accompanied by the owner of the Eagle s

44. The Social Construction Of Gender Essay
The physical body has been seen as many things both positive and negative. It can
be thought of as the temple which houses the soul or can be seen as entrapping,
like a cage of flesh. More often it seems that the body, especially women s bodies,
are looked at in more complicated ways than the bodies of men. As I grew up, it
began to feel more and more like my body, and the bodies of other women, did not
actually belong to us like we believed. Through my Women s Studies class I have
gained more knowledge on the body as a political object. In this essay I will
examine six different articles with the similar theme of women s bodies, the
expression of those bodies and how by using feminismas a political standpoint they
gain power and ownership of their bodies. The first article is The Social Construction
of Genderby Judith Lorber. In this essay she states that sex and gender is
constructed through the society in which we live and that, Gender is so pervasive
that in our society we assume it is bred into our genes (Lorber, 64). Lorber s article
takes the standpoint that physical gender expression is such an important topic to
individuals because when the conventions of gender are shifted, we feel socially
dislocated (65). An example of this is when people who are not used to gender shifts
encounter a transvestite, or in modern terms a transgenderperson, their perceptions
are disrupted. If someone does not express physical gender normally with their
bodies i.e. a

Introduction
Concept analysis is discussed by Walker and Avant (2005) as a way to describe
phenomena in nursing practice, as it allows the theorist, researcher, or clinician to
come to grips with the various possibilities within the concept of interest (Walker

Areas of particular relevance to health educators include heterosexual bias in
sexuality education curriculum and textbook context, AIDS education, hate violence,
adolescent suicide, and health education research on lesbian and gay topics.
Strategies for eliminating homophobia include professional development of health
educators and curriculum change at the university level (Baker, 1991, np). Other
researchers like Black, Oles and Moore (1998) reported on a study of the relationship
between students attitudes toward women and toward gay men and lesbians and
changes in those attitudes during social work courses at two universities. The study
found a significant relationship between students levels of homophobia and sexism.
The relationship was stronger for female students than for male students and varied
by race and academic major. The article also discussed the implications of the
findings for changing social work curricula (np). Barry (1998) explained that a series

A very popular and large sporting event that receives an extremely high volume of
national media coverage is the Olympic Games. For a number of years, major
stations like NBC has provided audiences with an around the clock coverage of the
Games. Many other major medias similar to NBC have also done the same by
devoted sections solely to the Olympic Games. The Olympics is a time where citizens
come together to root for their home country, strengthening their sense of nationalism
and pride and cheering for their home athletes to come out victoriously and the
country as a powerhouse of the world. Organically, the games give off a sense of war
like mentality because countries are competing against each other for the prize, the

it was a way of saying that as a nation they are resilient and can overcome anything

48. Media Managing Research Paper Overview
Researchers often assume that a firm s media coverage is an exogenous result of
actual news about the firm. In this paper I show that firms actively manage the
quantity of media coverage they receive, increasing coverage of good news and
decreasing coverage of bad news. Firms do this media managing by including media
experts on their board of directors. That is, coverage in the news mediais, in part, a
choice that firms make. Here is an example that describes the expectations of firms
from media experts I consider in this paper:
In 1985, former Philip Morris chief executive Hamish Maxwell wrote the following
in an internal memo: A number of media proprietors that I have spoken to are
sympathetic to our position Rupert Murdoch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Asset pricing literature argues that information asymmetry of this sort should cause
discount rates to rise through liquidity channel (Kelly and Ljungqvist, 2009). I
present evidence consistent with this interpretation using a difference in difference
design firms with media experts suffer an increase in cost of capital by 120 to 300
basis points per year that is attributed to liquidity beta. The finding that board member
induced managed media coverage reduces liquidity beta complements the findings of
other papers studying the liquidity impact of press coverage in other contexts (see
Bushee, Core, Guay, and Hamm,2010; Solomon, 2009; and Soltes, 2009).
If having media on board increases future press coverage, but dampens asset prices
through the liquidity channel, why would firms actively seek such board members?
A simple cost/benefit analysis suggests that firms should get something out of having
such people on board. Media experts may help hire better public/investor relation
firms or consultants. In other words, such board members may provide connections
to media and related industries (e.g., advertising, public relations). Given that
advertising spending is also a big revenue item for media companies, firms would
benefit from media expertise on board through efficient allocation of advertising
expenditures. Consistent with this interpretation, I find reduction in cost of capital as
measured by reduced exposure to Fama and French s HML factor. Because

The Sacred Romance Drawing Closer to the Heart of God by Brent Curtis and
John Eldredge is an interesting book that s supposedly filled with useful
information about how to live like a Christian and become more like Christ.
However, this book has many issues. Brent Curtis and John Eldredge attempt to get
us as readers to understand how to live and be more like Christ by comparing the
pains and sufferings we all go through in our everyday lives to that of arrows
piercing our hearts. As Curtis and Eldredge talked about arrows piercing our hearts
I realized there have been times in my life that happened to me. Finally, after
reading the book I realized that this book has the potential of being an interesting
read but, it s many errors leave us as readers confused. In their novel, The Sacred
Romance Curtis and Eldredge discuss the concept of arrows piercing the heart. What
Curtis and Eldredge are telling us the readers that the arrowsrepresent all pains,
sorrows, troubles, and sins that we get into in our life. When I read this, I assumed
that the heart Curtis and Eldredge are talking about is metaphorical to how we live
our Christian lives and how close we are to being more like Christ. If Curtis and
Eldredge were talking about the real heart, then they did it wrong because they talked
about it representing good. When the Bibletells us that the heart is anything but,
good. However, Curtis and Eldredge fail to really give us much information about
what they mean when they are
50. The French Revolution And Napoleonic Wars
The history of Latin American has a bloody past filled with war and hardship. The
struggle for independence plays a key role in the history of Latin America and
understanding the development that came post independence. Latin America has
struggled with debt and dependence on foreign countries. Events that occur in Latin
Americaare often a result of things happening in the Western Hemisphere.
Much of Latin America s fight for independence was fueled by war. Latin America
continued to be greatly affected by events that occurred in the western hemisphere.
The French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars were major factors in igniting Latin
America s movement for independence. The French Revolution occurred during 1789
1799 in attempt to challenge the monarchial political structure. The French
Revolution was fought to pursue Enlightenment ideals to promote popular
sovereignty.
The ideologies of the French Revolution were used to justify the overtaking of other
European kings and the establishment of republics. The military was aggressive in
establishing French control in other countries. The French Revolution was
eventually led by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The Napoleonic Wars occurred
during 1799 1815 as a result of the French Revolution. England was the leading
country against the French expansion. Portugal had been a long time ally with
England. In 1807, Napoleon invaded Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. However a few
days prior to the invasion, the English royal navy shipped the
51. Personal Philosophy Of Leadership And Generational Lines
PERSONAL APPROACH TO LEADERSHIP 2
Personal Approach to Leadership across Cultural and Generational Lines The world
seems to be getting smaller, and a harmonized place of work seems to be something
of the yesteryears. Instead, current leaders are required to deal with a diversity of
employees across generational in addition to cultural lines, respectively with their
personal values, work ethic, as well as desires. The situation can be a difficult
profession to keep every person in high spirits and productive. Therefore, styles and
approaches that function satisfactory with some individuals may be entirely
unsuccessful with others. Nevertheless, a leader should not alter their entire leadership
approach every time they have an interaction with someone from a diverse generation
or cultural environment. It would be my suggestion to have one sound approach
that would work for most of everyone. In spite of age or cultural circumstances,
each member of a team for sure has one something in common: they work for a
salary and they have to be productive in order to continue to receive a salary.
Therefore, individuals should learn how to balance this and other mutual grounds
into a place of work environment that not just accepts diversity, nevertheless
embraces it. Stop allowing alleged divisions hurt team s efficiency and learn the
competences needed to successfully guide a diverse team.
52. Earthquakes And Its Effects On Natural Disasters
Earthquakes are one of the most dangerous and life threatening natural disasters
known to mankind. Earthquakes can happen at any time and anywhere without
warning. There are many earthquakes that happen every day with only minor tremors
that are not felt by humans. However, there are some earthquakes big and strong
enough to cause damage at very high levels. Earthquakes have a very long history of
destruction. The Earth s crust is filled with slowly moving plates. These plates are in
constant motion under the surface of the Earth. As the size of the plates increase, the
movement speed of the plates increase. When these large plates break apart from
their own boundaries, they move into the path of other plates. When these plates...

However, there is a subduction zone that is to the west of Indonesia, but large
earthquakes and tsunamis do not happen very often in the Indian Ocean so there is no
way to recognize there is a problem (Osborne). With the Indian Ocean not getting
large earthquakes and tsunamis very often, the islands are not as prepared for these
destructive events like Japan, for example, is for these natural disasters. The
earthquake happened 160 km west of the northern part of Sumatra and at a depth of
about 30 km, which is fairly shallow waters. This earthquake caused a displacement
of the seabed that resulted in a cliff line which released an amount of energy that is
equivalent to 23,000 Hiroshima type of atomic bombs (Osbourne). This earthquake
was unexpected to happen at the location that it did. According to previous research,
the Indian Ocean was not vulnerable to such a strong earthquake (Osbourne).
Although the earthquake did not cause the damage, the tsunami that it created was a
deadly and destructive force that the people were not prepared for. Tsunamis are
caused by underwater earthquakes that displaces a large amount of water. The
December 26, 2004 earthquake caused a deadly tsunami that is one of the most
destructive tsunamis to ever happen. The 9.1 9.3 earthquake lasted for ten minutes
and caused a fault line that stretched 750 miles to move up 40 feet. This movement of
the earth pushed boulders
